Title: Notes on Players..Should I? Post by: Heid on November 20, 2005, 12:14:57 PM Should I be keeping notes on players?
I have a pretty good memory for names and stuff, and I remember names from tables, but not always specifics, does it really help that much? It seems an awful lot of bother? Title: Re: Notes on Players..Should I? Post by: snoopy1239 on November 20, 2005, 12:46:22 PM Sooooooooooo... in that case.. why? so next time you play them, you can have a quick glance at your notes to see what sort of players they are and the types of decisions they make. Just simply writing things like FISH, SHARK, ROCK, LOOSE, etc is an effective start. Then perhaps you can say things like 'flatcalls aces under the gun', 'always makes the continuation bet', 'Always pays off a value bet' and so on. Hope that helps. Ta Spoony :) It's not so bad live, because you are playing less players and less hands. With the visual images, your brain finds it easier to remember specific situations and is able to recall past experiences. Online however, everything feels the same, so the notes are crucial in recollecting information gathered from past hands. Title: Re: Notes on Players..Should I? Post by: Longy on November 20, 2005, 12:51:00 PM Yes i make note on all players i play against. I do this as every piece of info you can on an opponent is vital. For example what kind of hands do they raise with. So if your holding aj for example you can prob consider all 3 options pre flop depending on your opponent if he has raised before you. Also do they like to slowplay or bluff alot and so on. The list is endless really but it is all about knowing the player, therefore you can make better informed decisions as there is less incomplete information.

Title: Re: Notes on Players..Should I? Post by: zelda on November 20, 2005, 01:37:25 PM I dont keep notes on players, but if you decide to dont rely to much on them - you may have made the notes when the player was on an off day - and dont forget players improve and you may under estimate their game...

Title: Re: Notes on Players..Should I? Post by: jezza777 on November 20, 2005, 02:59:22 PM Definatley , yes , absolutely , do it. start off with a basic system that categorises people rock , maniac, shark ect and go from there.Always be prepared to change your notes on players and watch all hands to the conclusion even if you are not activley in them . The odd comment can then be added to the profile ie called a raise of 4xbb with aj out of position or bets flush draws or likes to slowplay. It helps to build a picture of a players style and can help you make a difficult call with more confidence or fire a value bet on the river knowing you will get paid. CAn also let you fire off a bluff with more chance of success.
Other reasons for notemaking are others are doing it and it gives them an edge any edge is good . It puts ££££ into your bankroll . It keeps you active if you are going through a dry spell cardswise , stops you getting bored and making mistakes. Keeps you in the poker mindset so when you do get the opportunity to play a hand you arn't rusty. Title: Re: Notes on Players..Should I? Post by: The Baron on November 20, 2005, 06:49:10 PM Yes yes and yes again. In online poker (especially if you're doing it full time) you MUST have notes!
Always reassess, adapt them - don't be afraid to change an earlier comment that may now be obselete or wrong. Always be on the lookout for new fish in your game. Never forget those who sit short stacked in cash games (for a quick buck) and your number 1 target should be players prone to tilt who can potentially become ATM's. I am a notes FREAK. (Yes even more than Star Wars Heid!) Don't be afraid to sit out just watching games and making notes. (Boring but highly effective and a great way to work on impatience as well IMO) I do this when I'm tired or have had a few beers and am in no state to play. Spot patterns, remember moves and apply them later on to the right people. Only today I took an entire $400 stack after flopping a set by BETTING it when heads up. Usually I'd check but my notes told me he'd move on a weak bet from me post flop in a big pot. Worked like a charm. Really cant stress how important I think notes are. Title: Re: Notes on Players..Should I? Post by: sharpy on November 20, 2005, 07:39:03 PM I keep player notes as well. They certainly helped in certain situations in the past. But somehow mine have dissappeared. :dontask:
Now I have to start again, but it is worth it Title: Re: Notes on Players..Should I? Post by: Graham C on December 14, 2005, 10:04:17 PM couldnt seem to find the most recent post on notes but this will do
Do you come across people (online) that you have notes on? I make notes on the software of the sites I play but I'm yet to come across someone that I have notes on. I appreciate that there are 1000's of players on each site though, perhaps I will in time. Title: Re: Notes on Players..Should I? Post by: RED-DOG on December 14, 2005, 10:14:43 PM I usually play the same games on the same sites every day, I had 100s of notes (before I lost them) and it was unusual to be on a table without one or two players I had notes on
Keep taking notes and update them every time you get new info Title: Re: Notes on Players..Should I? Title: Re: Notes on Players..Should I? Post by: JustJo on December 15, 2005, 02:11:48 PM The only thing I have found wrong with player notes is that they are saved on your C:\drive.
When I got my new PC, wiped my HDD and reinstalled everything, no more player notes!! (Not that any of mine had to do with how they played poker ;) ) If its any help to anyone, your VC notes (and maybe all Tribeca skins) are saved in C:\WINDOWS\PlayerNotes (or they were!) Jo xx |
