Title: Where to live and play
Post by: TMP on November 21, 2005, 09:11:47 AM
I am looking to come to England in the next month to live for at least 12 months and am looking for suggestions of which city to choose.

I have been living in Europe for the last 6 years so have no perceived favourite places.

I was thinking of Nottingham as I read they have a casino for tournaments and I have relatives in that area.

Not to mention of course that media superstar tikay 8)

On the occasions that I have visited England I have mostly stayed in London and played at the Vic.

Of course I will need accomodation, so am looking for a small flat close by the casino or in a location where it would be easy to get there by local transport.

I will be mostly playing online while there with occasional excursions to the casino.

Any helpful information will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Depends if you drive or have access to a car? Notts has 5 soon to be 6 nights of poker at it's casino. Alternative is Walsall/Birmingham. Notts is also in easy reach of both plus Sheffield as well. Good road links and plenty of city centre rental properties.

Avoid the south of England if at all possible, unless you want to be swallowed up whole by your own backside

Seriously though, with an impartial mind and all other things considered equal, somewhere central is probably your best bet, as then you will have the most choice (if you have transport). Nottingham and the Birmingham areas are probably the most densly populated for players and choice of casino. And of course in a central location to the rest of the country.

I'd plump for Nottingham if you've family in the area.

What regional accent do you prefer? You don't want to get stuck in an area for 12 months if the locals scratch your brain when they talk.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help.

I've actually stayed in Nottingham a few times when I visited my niece and her family so I at least know the place a bit

People mostly mistake my accent for English ( must have been the elocution lessons my mother made me do when I was a kid ) but I'm actually one of the pesky aussies.

I thought I'd swap the sleet and snow of freezing Moscow for the sub-tropical English winter  8)

I'm just looking forward to speaking english again for a change and discussing poker and strategy and tactics, you know, boring things like that.
