Title: DIY question Post by: Claw75 on November 29, 2008, 02:21:56 PM i need to lay some new flooring in my kitchen, nothing fancy. So, is it just a matter of getting a roll of lino, some adhesive and a stanley knife and off I go or is there anything else I need to think about?
Title: Re: DIY question Post by: Claw75 on November 29, 2008, 02:27:24 PM or am i better off going with self-adhesive floor tiles? I've got to replace it because the old tiles that are there are coming up at the edges and chipping away, but looks like they've been laid onto vinyl rather than straight on to the flooring - presumably if I pull the lot up that should be ok?

Title: Re: DIY question Post by: Claw75 on November 29, 2008, 02:33:09 PM Get the landlord to pay for the job obv. he will be paying, but I want it done sooner rather than later so would rather just get it done myself and dock the next rent payment :) off out to get some tiles - wish me luck! Title: Re: DIY question Post by: Jim-D on November 29, 2008, 02:38:39 PM Just make sure when you've taken all the material back to bare floor that it is all swept clean before laying,
EDIT: Just read your talking of self adhesive tiles not quarry tiles Title: Re: DIY question Post by: Geo the Sarge on November 29, 2008, 03:05:22 PM Claire,
If you are stripping back to the floor, make sure the surface is clean and even. This may be the reason the previous person laid vinyl before laying the tiles. I done mine last year and when stripped back to floor, there were some uneven parts to the surface. I got round this by laying a thin 2-3 mm layer of plywood on floor and then applying tiles to that. Done the job quite nicely. Anyway, it's turned out to be a pretty painless task - took up the old tiles and lino and there was already plywood laid underneath - half the kitchen done now :)up

Bit ropey round the edges, but I'm quite pleased with myself anyway. Matt's back tomorrow after being away for a couple of days. I wonder how long it will take him to notice?
Title: Re: DIY question Post by: Jim-D on November 29, 2008, 11:08:02 PM If the edges are a little ropey and you should do this any way, Use a clear silicone all around the edges (skirting boards and kitchen units) you might want to get someone who knows what they're doing to do it because if it is done wrong it can look terrible but when done right it really finishes it off well

The wall edges are fine, it's just the edges by the units that are a bit dodge, and you can only really see them if you are on the floor :D Title: Re: DIY question Post by: cia260895 on November 29, 2008, 11:13:01 PM take the plinths off

Title: Re: DIY question Post by: Claw75 on November 30, 2008, 12:13:04 AM I'm a bit disappointed with that photo, I thought it was gonna be all colourful like the adventure game well it's still clean at the moment - give it a while. I did lol when I read on the packet 'don't wash the floor for 5-7 days'. [ ] I would have washed the floor within the next 7 days. Title: Re: DIY question Post by: trafficjam on November 30, 2008, 12:05:47 PM Well done, you did that really quickly. I like the new flooring.
I have just had my bathroom re-furbished, just because we needed a new toilet seat. Its a long story but we are without flooring at the moment as the special non-slip I want is out of stock. However, Claw you remind me of myself when younger, I used to do everything, even put floorboards down in a cupboard that used to be a coal cupboard. That is when hubby was away as he thought no one could do a job as good as him lol. Oh to be young again, I used to clean the house thoroughly in a day. Now have to do housework for ten minutes then have a sit down and play poker in between. For the last 3 days I have been sorting out cupboards and still not finished! I play more poker nowadays than doing jobs round the house. Oh to be young - make the most of it while you can . age creeps up too quickly. ;tk; (forgive me for using TK's smiley but I am older than him) ;bumwiggle; Title: Re: DIY question Post by: Claw75 on November 30, 2008, 01:07:14 PM Well done, you did that really quickly.
