I’ve never been to Vegas and I’m thinking of booking a holiday for next year. Any tips on making it as cheap as possible? Which hotels do you recommend and any tips on booking it? Package or separate etc. 

As far as making it as cheap as possible, flightwise your best off for Virgin's direct route book it through the website as they price match if you find it cheaper elsewhere. You can try looking at going via somewhere else but most of the time this doesn't work out cheaper.

For hotels always book direct with the hotel as if the price drops you can phone them and they will change the price for you. If you book with someone here they will not change the price. Also if you book with the hotel directly you don't need to pay until you checkout you only pay 1 night to guarantee it.

I have attached some links of websites that track hotels special offers. These are golden as Vegas is currently in its worse downturn since the mob left town and are begging people to stay. Remember to check the terms and conditions to make sure you can cancel it.

If you want as cheap as possible you will need a connecting flight, i.e. fly to the states and then connect from there to vegas. Go on expedia and check out their deals for flights and hotels for the dates you want to travel.

Outside of the WSOP, what's the best time of year to go to Vegas as a recreational player?

Would like to go for a week with my Dad for the experience this year, play some small tournies, and so probably want to avoid the rush of any huge events.

if you don't like the heat, you should avoid going in June thru August - it gets up 120F during the day (although if you're planning to spend much of the day inside the air-con is lovely!) At this time of year the tempreture drops to around 60F during the day & around 40F at night, so pack the woolies!

Staying in Downtown Vegas is cheaper than on the Strip but I don't think there is as much poker action & there's much more choice on the Strip.

Lots of factors really to give a defo answer, particularly in current changing financial climate.
For what it's worth the 4 times i've been I have watched prices but always found it cheapest arond 4-6 weeks before departure date. This has been on expedia.

November is a good time to go, weather in 70's and plenty of fish around as 2 holidays in November.

Just a quick note entry requirement to the US are changing , after 12th january you must apply for a visa waiver at least 3 days before travel otherwise you will be turned back at immigration.

It makes more sense to stay at or around the MGM Grand.

Any saving you make from staying down the strip will be eaten up by cab fares.
