Very Scary stuff-anybody else watching it?

My mate just made a comment that England fans could get into trouble over there, but I think we are one of the better behaved sets of fans at the moment - it scares me what might happen to the Italian, Spanish, Croatian and all the other sets of fans that have been guilty of racist chants over recent years.

Yeah I think that will be a problem but I think the biggest problem will be from car jackings and robberies- it will be open season!!!

Jo'berg IS a scary place. Last time I was there, about 3/4 years ago, for a flight transfer, I was warned not to leave the airport. During that period I had been to other parts of SA, I saw, at too close a proximity, an attempted hijacking, armed police you wouldn't trust, and other sights. You know life is lived in the "raw". Yet the sheer beauty of the country is staggering.

Yep, very scary. Excellent documentary and I always love Louis. How he gets everyone to be so open and honest is amazing.

Cape Town and the Garden Route area is amazing, don't let Jo'berg put you off SA.

I think he's great too- he didn't seem fazed(maybe naively) by the people he met-whats to stop those 2 guys he talked to on a street corner(who were admitting to car jackings and murder) from turning on him and robbing him.

Silo I know what your saying and I'm sure security will be on a massive scale but I would be very surprised if there isn't a lot of muggings/car jackings(and possibly some murders during the world cup)

Your going to have thousands of people who are comparatively rich compared to the millions of people living in poverty in SA going over. I think this will draw the people out of the slums and into the cities which could lead into trouble.

I'd obviously heard that it was rough in SA, but in the two weeks we were there, we didn't see one bit of trouble.   Clearly we stuck to tourist areas, didn't go wandering at night down back alleys etc, but then I wouldn't do that in London either.  There's crime in every major city, and those that host major events probably do see an increase in crime, but I wouldn't say that you should be more concerned than say going to Beijing to watch the Olympics.

SA has plenty of rich people living there already, there's a lot of people that aren't short of a few quid, normal people, and it's an amazing place, you should visit it at some point :)

The Philadelphia one was much better than last nights one imo.

Security will be fine for the world cup. I've been twice during sporting events and there was so many police/special forces you couldn't breathe. Plus there really is no reason to go to Joburg city centre where the majority of the worst crime occurs.

Scary stuff. Esp the interview with the two criminals near the end.

Me and a mate are thinking of going over for the world cup but it is a bit scary that there is loads of places where could get possible aggro add to that we will be mortal most of the trip maybe not a good idea lol, see what happens.

You'll be fine mate, Joburg is the only seriously dodgy place and there is no need to go to the dodgy areas, plenty of nice suburbs to stay in. Other than that as long as you stay in the touristy areas if your on the piss your unlikely to have a problem. Cape Town is a must, best city in the world IMO. been loads of times and will keep going back.

Wow football fans at the World Cup are going to be easy targets...I can see major trouble at camp sites etc.

I agree-just cashing in at the expense of others when its the last thing jo'burg needs! TBF though they were just gangsters- just the same as most of the security companies in this country are owned by gangsters.

Their country looks fucked though- you cant have people stoning folk- its just Barbaric and about 300 years behind the times! But then if the country are unwilling to police these districts then what can you do! Wonder how many people have been falsely killed by the mob just because someone said they stole a mobile phone.

If the police there are so in-effective then there isn't a lot of choice. It's anarchy, no use saying how things should be. Either you sit back and do nothing or you get involved and try to make a difference. The farmer on the program appreciates and needs the support of the gangsters. Without them he likely wouldn't have a business.

The solution is simple, just hire Theroux Security Inc. "Build a bigger fence, electrify it" -(William: They will tear it down,  Louis "Build a bigger fence! Electrify it!" Sigh.
I've seen a few shit African countries, but that place is systemically shit.
1-Totally corrupt and incompetent police force
2-Huge unemployment
3-A widescale ability and willingness to carry out brutal and 'cruel' acts of violence in order to get a little money.

I worked in Congo during the mass evacuation of Brazza. They had worse 1 and 2 but very very little -3. I got held up, big guns, militia, faux militia, gangsters, but no one actually wanted to hurt you.

His best work is when he is able to gain the trust of people and you actually get an insight into a persons deepest feelings.  This didnt really happen imo.

Usually you tend to find we seem to replicate american culture with about a 10 year delay but it's been about a good while in america which is why i'm so surprised we havnt had it over here.

I do remember watching program a few years back saying it was coming and people had started to manufacture it hear but it seems it hasnt really taken off.
