Title: A pointless identify the man on a bus quiz.
Post by: Tonji on December 09, 2008, 12:12:43 PM
Identify this famous old fella in the hat.

I've got 3 photographs of him. The last should be a big clue. I'll put the rest up over the course of the day.

Guess away  :)

Dunno about the guy in the hat, but the other guy looks just like Fagin from the film 'Oliver'

Not sure of the Gents identity, but if it helps to elimninate "suspects", it is NOT a London Bus.

The RT's, RTL's, & all RM variants did not have that window detail - they had little stainless steel "turn handles", the windows hinged at the bottom, & were not "sliders".

So, probably not taken in London.

That should narrow it down.

Lowry?

Correct Kin

you win a round of ;applause; ;applause;

the last one was Lowry at work, in his studio.

I've spent the past few days reading about him. An interesting fella, spent most of his working life as a rent collector.

also from Wikipedia.

Quote
Lowry declined an 'Order of the British Empire'(OBE) in 1955, a 'CBE' in 1961, 'knighthood' in 1968, and 'Order of the Companions of Honour' (CH) in 1972 and 1976. He holds the record for the most honours declined.

A total shot in the dark, but that picture - in particular the beautiful brick-built viaduct - reminds me very much of Stockport.

And here is a Stockport picture, with precisely the same Bus variant & livery, in shot, lower left. And trams, fascinatingly.

Just done a bit more research, and can tell you the name of the photographer and the year it was taken:

L. S. Lowry Sketching Stockport Viaduct, 1961, by Crispin Eurich (1936-76).

And, 47 years on, that Viaduct remains in use to this day, still carrying the West Coast Main-Line.

I was the RC Subbie in the 70's for a hideously ugly office block alongside that River, almost underneath the Viaduct, (I think it's the Mersey), which I doubt still stands.

By the bye, Stockport dignitaries claim that their Viaduct is the 2nd largest brick-built structure in Europe, but personally, I very much doubt it's in the Top Ten.

I thought you'd be fascinated by that. ;)

My friend google tells me that the Stockport Viaduct was constructed in 1847.

161 years old, & still doing the job is was designed to do.

Typical Victorian engineering.

Never mind that, go turn your System Restore off. It was so obviously "Sysetm Restore", I'm amazed you never thought of that, sigh.

Never worry about my age & stamina, I can still go like a train. It just takes a bit of time, that's all. Especially to recover.

Tonji, I don't know whether you're just interested in old photo's or old photographic bits and pieces in general but I worked in the photographic business  for a good few years and collected one or two things that you might find interesting.

Here's a couple of old exposure meters I managed to pick up.

(http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/2492/beemeter001tt9.jpg)  (http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/5638/beemeter003tg1.jpg)

I don't think they are worth a great deal but they look nice.

Hi Wader, interesting bits, but not really my line of business though, I buy & sell the images, not equipment. Try looking at finished Ebay auctions to get an idea of value if your looking to sell them.

Sorry mate did it sound like a sales pitch, not after selling them just thought you might have been into that sort of stuff too.
Got quite a few glass negs as well, collected them more out of interest than for selling on tbh.

Here's a squashed bike
(http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/6277/img0133ph9.jpg)

and a squashed plane

I've got a lot of views and scenery too and 1 or 2 of cricketers late 1920's early '30s i'd guess.
