Title: Anyone know Gibraltar?
Post by: Laxie on December 09, 2008, 08:56:51 PM
I've been invited to go on a 2 week 'working holiday' cruise next August.  'Working' in that we have to prepare lectures about the places we'll be visiting for the passengers.  I've been given Gibraltar.  I'm sure I'll find plenty thanks to Google, but was hoping for some 'local knowledge' if anyone has it.

Little known facts
Best places to go
Avoid this

That kind of stuff.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

gib's well weird. you're minding your own business strolling along the road from the border town of la linea and suddenly a plane will land on the road you were just on. scares the shit out of you if you're not expecting it.

useless fact- I'm the only person ever to visit gib and not go up the rock or see any apes

It's like Fuengirola minus the quantity of Northerners in football shirts

just remembered a great story from about 5 years ago. a group of royal marines were due to practice beach landings on a gibraltan beach, unfortunately they got slightly lost and actually invaded spain by mistake

Little known facts - there aren't any, because all the 'little known' facts will be repeated ad nauseam by the gib tour taxi drivers.

The monkeys are in fact barbary macaques. It was said that when the apes leave gibraltar, so do the british. After WW2 there were only a few apes, so Churchill had another 16 breeding pairs shipped over from morocco.

Best places to go - the new ocean village development with shops, restaurants, casino etc although if I'm being perfectly honest, the best place to go in gib is actually spain.

Avoid? Main street - alternating tat, leather, jewellery, overpriced electronics shops.

You'll rarely get trouble there - it's such a small place that everyone knows everyone.

PM me your msn and I'll chat to you on there....

Gatso - thanks for the donations and pleasure to meet you fella

When Nelson died his body was first taken to Gibraltar on 28th October 1805.

To preserve his body he was placed in a very large barrel of Brandy.

I have flown into Gib a few times and its quite disconcerting when you look out the window to find out you have run out of runway.....

Can you do this whilst inebriated?

Spent an hour on the phone last night with my step-mom (she's the who's asked me along) and luckily she only wants my help finding 'unusual' info. about the place.  She's got all the Wikipedia info., so no need for anything that's already mentioned there.  I won't be doing the lectures.  Delighted to say that's her gig, so I can relax and enjoy the trip.  Just helping her gather the info. on the different places we'll be docked.

My brother came 2nd in the "Top of the Rock" race in 1989 if my memory's correct.

Hope that's unusual enough for you.

What is 'Top of the Rock'?  Is it like a mini marathon or something?

While we're at it...anyone been on MS Independence of the Seas?  That's the wee boat we'll be on.  Just wondering if they hype it up a bit much or if it's really ok?  Kind of feel bad being away for 2 weeks during the summer without the rest of the family, TBH.  I'd have turned the trip down if they hadn't insisted...in-laws too.  Hmmmmm.  Wonder if they're hoping we'll sink?   rotflmfao

"The traditional race which takes runners from the dockyard to the top of the Rock – a gruelling course which although only 2.5 miles long ascends some 1,250 feet – has been contested by visiting ships for over 50 years"

Gibraltar is not top of the list of places to go for IRA members looking for a spot of R&R.
