Title: O/T Comp problems
Post by: smithy69 on November 23, 2005, 09:11:17 AM
I had to hand back my laptop when i finished my job so am back on the PC. It works fine usually although a bit slow.

For some reason it wont run any poker programs. It gets stuck as soon as you click on the poker site icon.Any ideas

Check that you haven't got them blocked in your firewall!

what firewall do you have?

If its one with an icon in the bottom left hand side of the screen (system tray) then you should be able to just click on it, go to applications (or something like that ) where it shows all your programs and allow the poker programs.

If its the windows firewall - not sure tbh :D.  In this case you should get a proper firewall from either Sygate Firewall - tinyurl.com/d2kd (http://tinyurl.com/d2kd) or Zone Alarms Firewall - tinyurl.com/94j59 (http://tinyurl.com/94j59) and turn the wndows one off (Start Menu - Settings - Network Connections - RIght click on your connection and go to Properties - Advanced - Settings - Turn off)

Silo has said all the pertinent things, apart from ... Norton really dislikes gaming software apparently, so you ar gonna have to have a fiddle with that to get it to accept gaming stuff, or ditch it and get something Silo suggested.

I use Zonealarm, so I can't help you with Norton, but I expect someone has it on here, and configured it  right :)

PS Zonealarm is free :)

I have Norton on my PC and ZoneAlarm on my lappy.  Norton is ok with gaming, but I do prefer ZoneAlarm.

Smithy you are probably at the moment using the Windows one, and they may have been blocked in that - but as I am not at home I can't tell you how to check it.  It is in control panel somewhere.

Have you tried uninstalling one and then reinstalling it, normally if you have a firewall you will get a pop-up asking you if you want to allow or deny access to that programme - always allow on all ports!

Both ZoneAlarm and Sygate (in the links I posted) are free and both easy enough to use :)

Preference? None really, I use Sygate on 1 pc and Zone Alarms on another.  If I had to choose Id probably go with Sygate as it looks a bit more proffesional and seems to get on with things a bit more but both work well and are better than the windows one.

To test if it is the firewall, just disable the windows firewall and see if the poker programs work (without installing a new firewall)

You should get a new firewall either way.

Smithy, get avast! anti-virus  (http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239_4-10375520.html?tag=lst-0-1) and Sygate firewall  (http://www.download.com/Sygate-Personal-Firewall/3000-2092_4-10332265.html?tag=lst-0-1).

Click on the links, click on download and both are free.
