There's some great stuff for all age ranges. Upper end of that age range should be able to manage some of the motorised/technical stuff with a little help.
K'Nex is also excellent. You can make some really impressive structures, and it's a lot easier to break down and build up again than Lego. And for the same price as a mid-size Lego set that generally builds one or two models, you can get a K'Nex set that has instructions for 40. Two girls and a boy in the middle here, and although I started buying it for my son when he was 8, all 3 of them fight over it (my 15 yr old daughter still builds some very impressive stuff). Go for the biggest set you can afford (Toys R' Us usually has great deals on K'Nex) and it will keep him happy/busy/quiet for endless hours. Magnetix is also good, but works out extremely expensive to build up a decent amount to play with. The present I ever received ever was a space Lego galaxy explorer, better even than the Grifter bike I got a few years later. I'm pleased Lego is not too archaic for wee ones still.
