Title: Whisky advice Post by: kinboshi on December 23, 2008, 10:24:36 PM Is Dalwhinnie any good as a present to a whisky drinker?
:dontask: Title: Re: Whisky advice Post by: kinboshi on December 23, 2008, 10:28:17 PM Obviously no good as a present to vodka drinker - but you know what I mean.
Title: Re: Whisky advice Post by: bolt pp on December 23, 2008, 10:28:26 PM I can get you a crate for £80, they work out about £7 a bottle, gets you slaughtered but dont drink more than a third of a bottle in one sitting, you'll be ill for a week.

Title: Re: Whisky advice Post by: Swordpoker on December 23, 2008, 11:16:02 PM Dalwhinnie is very tasty
Title: Re: Whisky advice Post by: Somerled on December 24, 2008, 12:19:24 AM At last a subject I know about!
Dalwhinnie is a lovely light malt - it's the one I recommend for folk who "don't like whisky", it gives them a nice gentle starting point. Personally I'd go for the Highland Park which IMO is the finest all round whisky there is. The 18 year old is pound for pound the best there is but is a tad more expensive.the 12 yr old is just fine. Hope that helps a bit. Title: Re: Whisky advice Post by: bhoywonder on December 24, 2008, 12:35:14 AM Is Bells whiskey shit or good?
I got a xmas bonus to the tune of 1 litre,or should i give it away? Title: Re: Whisky advice Post by: thetank on December 24, 2008, 01:05:43 AM Dalwhinnie is for women imo, although you've got to have a bottle of it in the collection.
A fine present because you save them the shame of having to buy it themselves. "It's for the wife, honest" "orly?" Title: Re: Whisky advice Post by: Somerled on December 24, 2008, 10:20:30 AM Is Bells whiskey shit or good? I got a xmas bonus to the tune of 1 litre,or should i give it away? I'd give it away to someone I don't like very much. Title: Re: Whisky advice Post by: GreekStein on December 24, 2008, 10:44:28 AM Opinions on Talisker pls?
Title: Re: Whisky advice Post by: Somerled on December 24, 2008, 10:59:32 AM Opinions on Talisker pls? Superb malt - but not for the faint hearted. Very peaty & pungent. Some will tell you it's the best malt on the planet, others will tell you it's minging & tastes like TCP. To be perfectly frank I don't think there's any "bad" malts out there. Everyone has different tastes. There's a few (such as Aberlour) that I just can't stomach, but others will love the same whisky as much as I hate it. Only way to be sure is try as many as you can and decide which are your favourites. We stock about 50 malts and I think our job is to try & find one that suits the customer. For example, I would never give a "beginner" a Talisker as that would probably put them off whisky for life because it's so strong. I'd start them off with something like a Dalwhinnie or a Glenkinchie as they have much milder flavours. If they are very rich then I just start them off with the Highland Park 30 year old and hope they buy more. Bushmills... not so much. My friends call it soil whisky as they reckoned I was playing a trick on them, it was just Bushmills though. What have you tried and what do you like? Or spend a wee bit extra and get the 18 year old. Pure nectar. I think I prefer Bushmills however there isnt much in it. I have a glass now and again so a bottle will last me a good few months. Maybe I should invest a little more or just stick with what I know and stop looking for new things!! Never seen this thread before, but I think I can give a +6 to Highland Park. I love the Islay whiskys too, but they really are an aquired taste, and are very much on the border between nectar and dogpoo. And I don't know how anyone can slag glenmorangie when glenfiddich exists. Glenfiddich would spoil a good coke in my view, but I can drink Glenmorangie. The best bad blended whisky has always been teachers.
