Post by: bolt pp on December 31, 2008, 01:40:44 AM
WTF is it with guy and movies that are set in, have something to do with, or finish in Vegas?

The Vegas connection prob comes from his obsession about Elvis

which movies are you talking about

apart from leaving las vegas

hes done some good films though, his leaving las vegas hit a nerve and since then I watched a lot of his films.

that one where he goes to the orient to be a hitman and falls for a deaf lady is a bit dicey, but his films you can generally assume are pretty good.

director 1: hey we are going to do a film involving Las Vegas
director 2: do you know any actors that are obsessed with Elvis Presley?
director 3: yes, Nicolas Cage
director 4: in that case, he is perfect.

His father, August Coppola, is a professor of literature, while Cage's mother, Joy Vogelsang, is a dancer and choreographer; the two divorced in 1976.[2][3] Cage's mother is of German descent and his father is of Italian descent, with his paternal grandparents being Carmine Coppola, a composer, and Italia Pennino, an actress. Through his father, Cage is the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola and actress Talia Shire, as well as the cousin of directors Roman Coppola, and Sofia Coppola and actors Robert Carmine and Jason Schwartzman. Cage's two brothers are Christopher Coppola, a director, and Marc "The Cope" Coppola, a New York radio personality.[4] Cage was born into a Roman Catholic household and remains Catholic to this day, although he said in the mid-1990s that he was not religious.
I think hes related to Boldie  some where down the line.

8MM is a great film, he really did a great job in that

Its always hard to say whether a film would/wouldn't have been good because of a specific actor.. my own personal feeling is that out of the films I've seem, leaving las vegas/8MM, he seemed like he was completely perfect for both those roles. Most of his other films, you could get any other bonified "celeb" and the film would still be a success, but those two, he did a fantastic job and to quote the fabled X factor.. "he made the role his own"

So if you ask an actor to claim his 3 biggest/best roles at the end of his career

Pachino has :  Godfather, Scarface, Serpico

Deniro has : Goodfather, Casino, Goodfellas

Nicholson : Easy rider, One flow over the cuckoo nest, the shinning

what would cage claim as his

but then you go back to your prior point being, would these films have been as good if other actors had held the lead roles. Id say "pound for pound" Joe Pesci is the best actor ever in terms of "roles that other actors cant ever fill" because hes always just nailed so perfectly his roles, whereas a lot of deniro/pecino roles, they could so easily interchange each other.

Cages best 3 films are IMO

leaving las vegas
8MM
The Rock

that tells me his current films are shite compared to his older films, but thats a typical reaction I think.. people love posterity!

Impossible really to have a top 3 for de niro, it's top 5 min really, the three above + goodfellas and erm...........that's 4 so lets say king of comedy for now cos i said 5 and cant be bothered to change it but you get what im saying.

same with pacino in dave's list, you could add dog day afternoon and carlitos way to those IMO

nicholson, fuck knows and who cares, he isnt in the same league as those guys, look how embarressed he must be about heath ledgers performance as the joker, it's makes his portrayal look like something out of the "wack"!!!! "pow"!!!! "wollop"!!!!! tv show of the 60's!!!!

johnny depp is a much better actor than nicholson anyway!

fear and loathing in las vegas and P.O.T.C pt1 contain performances that are better than anything nicholson has done, depp should play the joker in the next batman film, he's the only actor alive that could do as good a job as heath ledger.

He is one of those actors that I haven't decided if I like him or not. Sometimes he is really good, other times he is dull.

Is the Joker in the next Batman movie?    I thought it was the Riddler?

He is also lined up to play Amarillo Slim

I used to love Cage, he was edgy and different. Vampires Kiss is an amazing film (in a weird way) and Kiss of Death he was just plain scary. Leaving Las Vegas is obv his best work and then I liked Face/Off and Con Air, but it was the death of him, all his films have been shite ever since.

They should have given him a bit longer playing the villain in Face/Off. I also thought it would have been really cool if him and Travolta filmed each scene twice, one with Cage as the good guy and the other with him the bad guy - it would have been a cheap way to bring out two versions of the same film and we would have known who was the better overall actor (this was before the days of DVD extras unfortunately).

Anyone see Al Pachino in Merchant of Venice on the box a couple of weeks ago? stunning acting.
