Title: Pasty durrr
Post by: Pyso on January 14, 2009, 03:48:36 PM
Caught a bit of poker last night on Channel 4.

Am I alone in thinking that every time Tom Dwan gets involved in a pot he takes forever and looks like he is going to pass out? Especially on that opening (rigged) first hand v Hellmuth, (where he flops a boat and Hellmuth lays down a flush on the river). Lol.

Am I alone in thinking his style is a little 'off the wall'?

Don't know why I found it so entertaining. Most TV poker is like watching paint dry.

Definitely a touch of the Iveys about him, looks like he's just taken a hit and seen a UFO or somefink

can you spot his tell? It' so obvious that I'm sure it'e done to tell the other players when he's bluffing, drawing or hit

Althoug it's not as bad as that bloke in the stripey jumpers at luton.

You can't possibly make such a judgement based on a Matchroom show. There isn't enough poker shown for the sample to be significant!

He's obv an excellent player, but I found him rather annoying on Poker After Dark personally!

I can't really understand why such a significant dislike for a guy can build up over the course of a few tv appearances and magazine interviews. He is probably the most hyped new player since Phil Ivey, this of course brings pressure. To me he seems uncomfortable infront of the cameras at the moment rather than arrogant or aloof. Small sample size at the moment obviously but he seems like a sound enough guy to me.

Title: Re: Pasty durrr
Post by: Chili on January 15, 2009, 01:50:57 PM
My opinion does not so much come from his attitude or face at the table (which is disturbing initself), but from the actual words spoken from his mouth at pre game interview.

Also looking like dracula's great grandson doesn't help him much.  Oh and the appearance of impending puking during every slowly thought out bet or raise (apart from the "all in" which he does rather quickly).  It just all adds up to annoying geek.

BUT...........I'd would rather watch him and his "interesting" moves than have to ever listen to Helmuth's voice ever again.

You should watch the latest poker after Dark's where Corey Zeidman needles Phil so much he donks off his whole stack.

This probably comes from the advanced online poker technique where you wait long enough to act and stop the RNG smack bang on your cards (try it!) :P

I spent a lot of time with Durrrr during the Premier League and he is certainly an interesting character. I think anyone who is prepared to make a living and play the game at the levels he does is certainly not going to be your every day man off the street.

Quite honestly I find him fascinating. I have spent a lot of time watching him play on FT in the past and have found myself becoming a fan and was really intrigued to meet him. When I looked at the line up, he was a player I really wanted in the Premier League. I got hold of his email address and sent him a cold email inviting him...nothing, so I forgot about it. I then found out that it was his old address so called Hellmuth for his number and tried a cold but rather long text inviting him to play. He replied "sure"..that was it and a minute later I received an email from Full Tilt to say that I had received a $75k transfer in my account. Our text dialogue continued for about a week..everytime he text me I had to get it translated by the younger generation in the office because there wasn't one sentence written out of on line code.

We asked all players to arrive by Saturday and all players emailed the office with arrival times to get picked up. Not Durrrr. We spoke on the phone and I kept asking him when he was flying..he told me he "had some business to sort out" and would be here and not to worry. I was worried and was ready to replace him. He didn't come on Saturday. Sunday morning at 9am I went onto FT and he was 6 tabling. I saw him win over $400k in about 20 minutes so text him.."Listen get off line and get on the fu*king plane". It was 4 am his time. He was at JFK airport at 5 and flew at 6.20 and arrived in London that afternoon.

When I met him I really couldn't make him out. I mean if you told me the guy was a multimillionaire gambler I would laughed in your face, but to watch him play was a pleasure. Of course in the show on Channel 4 you only get to see around 50 mins of a 5 hour game and you have to tell a story, so after you get the all-ins in, you can only get time for 5 or 6 of the best hands, but let me tell you he put fear into these players like I have never seen before. They respect him and they know just how good he is. We spent a few nights out in town..he wanted the best restaurants, the best nightclubs whilst still looking like he had just finished work experience at the local bank.

One thing is for sure, Tom Dwan is a genius. His business ideas away from the table tend to make sense and he has a plan. When you sit at his computer and watch him multi-table with over $2m in play and regularly push 3/400k with a flush or open ended st8 draw it made me feel sick sometimes and I didn't have a cent in play.

Arrogant? Sure. A 22 year-old kid making millions of dollars gambling online against the most seasoned players in the game, affording whatever he wants and flying all over the World to take on any opponent that is ready for the challenge. What did you expect? A normal kid? Name me a great in any sport that isn't arrogant? You have to have that in you somewhere to be the greatest.

On next week's show Tom Dwan is in the commentary booth with Jesse May. It was one of the most opinionated, arrogant and generally mumbled performances I have ever seen. I have never enjoyed a commentary more.

I particullay like this paragraph.

There are many many arrogent poker players with far less to be arrogent about. The persona he has taken on certainly must work for him.

Oh and by the way. Welcome to the forum, with a first post this interesting here's hoping there will be many more to follow.

Ty all.

Pyso I didn't come on to defend him because you thought he was pasty! ;-) Just thought he was an amazing character.

Interesting too that you thought that first hand was "rigged"! To be honest I couldnt believe that cold deck popped out first hand they met in the league. Devilfish and Hellmuth really fell out over it as the Fish felt that Hellmuth shouldn't have bet the river. Interestingly Dwan said he would have insta-called the all in bet on the end if he was Hellmuth.

I will try and dig the hand out and put it online for those that missed it.

I don't really see the need to give him so much stick just because he comes across as a bit of a geek,i don't know him personally so would prefer not to give such a strong opinion on him at the end of the day he's jut another human being i have no reason to slate him so harshly on an internet forum and although i'm pretty sure durrr doesn't come on blonde it would be pretty shitty if he did to read this crap wouldn't it ? Apologies if i'm being a bit strong but just don't see the need to be so critical of another person who i'm pretty sure none of you know.

Micko,

In answer to your question...NO-ONE gets an appearance fee for playing and all players pay a $75k buy in. It makes me laugh when I see comments like "they don't even pay to play" or "they are all paid to turn up". We pay for their hotel for the week and drivers to and from airport/studio. To be honest 90% of them are sponsored and their sponsors will may the majority of their buy in as they are guaranteed a minimum of 6 shows and it's the most widely distributed TV show in the World.

With regards to the commentators, I like to use the players in the league. This is mainly for 2 reasons. i) They are the biggest names and greatest thinkers in the game ii) They are involved in the league so they are interested to know/watch the outcome, they are generally funking for certain players and they also understand both the strategy of the format and the points system. Of course Devilfishs' commentary is not everyones cup of tea but I still think Durrrrs last night was spot on.

It's impossible to keep everyone happy but if the hardcore poker fan thinks the show is a "total crapshoot" (a format which keeps the mass audience happy) then hopefully at least they enjoyed Durrrs' analysis.

Eddie

We are fine & dandy with Links from peeps who are on subject, & not here exclusively for the purpose of spamming.

We have had issues with Matchroom in the past, because they waded in & outright spammed. We just said to them, every time, work with us, please, be part of the community, & you can post pretty much anything. Spam only is a no-no. Those issues were before your tenure. Obviously. ;)

It was, (Durrrr), without a shadow of doubt, the best poker commentary I have ever heard.

Stunningly good, because he explained not just what, but WHY.

Loved every minute of it. I rarely watch the Matchroom stuff, (sorry sir Hearn, but I don't watch telly much at all), but I'd listen to Durrr any time, anywhere. So refreshing to bring in the new guard. A great decision by Matchroom. More of the same.
