Title: JJ with an awkward stack
Post by: Cf on January 15, 2009, 02:43:37 AM
Alea £40 freezeout

Blinds 200/400

Villian has about 12k
Hero has 7k

Villian has been playing very tight so far, and i've only seen him open 1 or 2 pots all night (in about 90 minutes). The one that went to showdown he had AA.

Villian raises UTG+1 to 1500
Folds to Hero in MP with JJ

Given that i'm relitively short stacked, but by no means desperate, what is a reasonable line to take here?

I would shove (or at least 3 bet a committing amount), though he appear to be a nit. In live poker you never get a massive sample size over 90 mins, so he may be opening a bit lighter than he appears to be.

I know where you are coming from op however in live poker 90 mins would only be about 30 hands or so. Is this a 9-10 handed table? What was his raise amount with the Aces? I'm still getting in it and go for the shove cos it looks weaker than a commiting 3-bet.

FWIW I would fold AQ/99 type hands against a 'tight' villain depending on reads.

I would shove 90% of the time here unless he's the rock from rocksville

I shove here with JJ.  What does everyone do with AQ or AJ?

I shove here with JJ.  What does everyone do with AQ or AJ?

If we're assuming this player is mega-tight, I'm def folding AJ.

If I think he can fold to a raise, I probs shove AQ at least half of the time; but if not, I could potentially pass it.

This. AJ is an insta-fold, not sure I like AQ either but same as James I probably shove it around half the time

Its a definate fold for me! I can see Villian with KK here!

I also came to the conclusion that I had to shove, but I wasn't the least bit suprised when I was shown KK.

A 3bet obviously also commits me.

Calling leaves me with no idea what he has, and the 8 high flop that came would have resulted in all the money going in anyway.

Is folding ever an option here? I was tempted to so, but decided that this was probably a little too weak.

your initial impression of him is that he is tight and he has raised ep,i get the feeling you ignored your gut instinct and played your cards rather than the situation/player .. folding here is not weak ..

Its very difficult, if not nigh on impossible to put him KK purely because a raise. A re-raise or re-re-raise, ok fair enough, but I  wouldn't beat yourself, i'd have done exactly the same...
