Title: A visit to the hospital today.
Post by: cia260895 on February 17, 2009, 07:53:54 PM
For a few days now i have had chest pains going round to the back,so an appointment was made yesterday to go and see the Dr's, Friday at 10.30 was the earliest result i though Lie in on friday.Last night was quite a retless night as it seems worse when I am in bed.Anyway I went to work this morning and Lisa called about 9 and asked how i was,i told her that the pain was still as bad as last night so she said right ill call the dr's to get another appointment, they advised her seeing as it was chest pain i should go straight to the hospita FFs I had a meeting at 10 with cakes and biscuits.

A short walk to St thomas's and I take my ticket to see the receptionist who would process me.Explained what was wrong and returned to my seat expecting a long boring wait.

2 minutes later i was called to the amazement of all the others who were waiting whisked into a room blood pressure and pulse taken the given an ECG,I'm now getting a bit worried, the test only took aabout 30 secs and there was an abnormality in the results told to take my stuff and follow nurse.I got put in a cubicle and told to get undressed and put a gown on.Another round of blood pressure and pulse taken then another ECG,now i am starting to fret a bit as the sheet they put up to record yuor BP and temp and pulse was a red one where all the others were blue Fk i wasthinking I'm too young to have a heart attack,a few more BP,Temp and pulses taken and then the Dr comes in looking all concerned whilst looking at my notes, then he looks up and says "well your be pleased in is not your heart"

thank feck for that,it is linked to the virus that i have had for 18 months and what i have is Costochondritis

Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone (sternum). It causes sharp pain in the costosternal joint — where your ribs and breastbone are joined by rubbery cartilage. Pain caused by costochondritis may mimic that of a heart attack or other heart conditions.

So co codamol is prescribed and im on my way but having the scare like that I have again decided to kick the fags

So in closing if any of you do ever suffer any chest pains its always best to seek medical advice/attention straight away better to be safe than sorry..........

I too have Costochondritis.  Diagnosis is your friend.

The fun starts when you get pain in about 6 months when you have been pain free for a few months, and just for a few seconds you forget you have it. . . . . . . . .

good news, and it should serve as a lesson to all that if you have any chest trouble you should get it seen to right away.l

i was told once by an emminent cardiologist that there genereally are two ways you find out you have a heart problem - the easy way or the hard way. Unless you have subjected your body to a lifetime of constant abuse, cardiac and coronary care are so advanced these days that most problems can be fixed either with drugs or surgical procedures. but to do nothing about it would be pure folly.

Don't envy you cia but glad you got a quick diagnosis.  I too have just been diagnosed with this and it absolutely mimics the symptoms of a heart attack though minus the tingling in the left arm, and is frightening and crippling - it is so difficult to breathe and move.  I have had these attacks for a number of years and been frightened for a long time especially as my Dad died of a heart attack.  It has previously been diagnosed as a panic attack and invariably severe indigestion.  I do suffer from these and acid reflux regularly in any case, and they have similar symptoms but are not the same and it is so difficult to get the right diagnosis despite acute descriptions of pain and effect.  I have read that there have been many cases where chest pain in men is examined and treated as being a possible heart attack from the outset but invariably with women severe indigestion is diagnosed first and yet, I believe, heart attack is responsible for the highest, or amongst the highest, killers of females in the UK. I have also read that heart attack symptoms can be slightly different in females but alas, I don't know the differences!  But whether you are male or female such pain is really frightening but fortunately Costochondritis is not life-threatening.  Look after your hearts as best you can, folks.

(Oh dear, Harmony is being serious yet again...)

yeah he's ok now, he's 28.

scary stuff, i went to see him in the cardio ward when he had the first one, was crazy, everyone else there mustve been 3x his age.

the story of how he had his first one was terryfying just to hear, let alone have it happen to you.

he doesnt really care that much though, still goes out and gets on it.

Mind over matter can be a good method of pain relief.

But sometimes you just can't beat a big pile of drugs. :)

An old school friend of mine had a heart attack at 19. You couldn't have picked a less likely candidate as he was one of the most fit and healthy people in our year. He since had another one and the only reason he's alive is because his parents are both doctors and were luckily able to revive him. He's since been fitted with a pacemaker.
