Title: Reverse Sheep game
Post by: dino1980 on February 19, 2009, 02:56:14 PM
Reverse Sheep Game:

Saw this on 2+2 last night, figured it would probably work on Blonde too as the Blonde Quiz was quite popular.

The goal for the participants is to try and think of an answer that they believe no one else will know/submit.

Rules

Here's the deal.

There are 11 questions, if you want in PM me your answers for them to me by Sunday Feb 22nd 8pm, each answer on a different line please.

Your score for each question is number of people who give the same correct answer. So you want to go for answers that you think will be less commonly given. Levelling commonly happens. The answer most commonly given is called the sheep, with the corresponding sheep score.

You are not allowed to do research such as Google searches to come up with answers. Just read the questions, wrack your brain, think ‘what would Andrew T do’ etc… These aren’t meant to be impossible questions the skill isn’t in thinking of an answer, it’s in thinking up an uncommon answer

If you give an incorrect answer, you will receive the sheep score + one half the number of distinct answers given, rounded up.

You MUST pass on one question and score a 0 for that question.

Any questions post in this thread (or PM), but don’t post your answers obv. I’ll do a reveal thread sometime Monday if we get a few participants, if no one enters then meh, it passed sometime at work.

Anyway to the questions:

Name a multiple WSOP bracelet winner (WSOPE bracelets do not count)

Name a hotel on the Las Vegas strip

Name a movie with ‘Vegas’ in the title

Name a recurring Simpsons character, whose surname is not Simpson.

Name a prime minister of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, anyone from 1720 to the present day counts.

Name a country whose flag is red and white (no other colours)

Name one of the 15 best selling works of fiction (novels) in history. Religious texts don't count, plays don't count, compilations of poetry don't count.

Name a suffix of a professional English football team who play in the Premier League, Championship, League One, or Two. FYI Rangers as in Queens Park Rangers doesn’t count

Name a standard chess piece

Name one of the top 20 websites (traffic), according to alexa.com

Name a city that has hosted the modern Summer Olympics (1896 onwards). However this city must not be the capital of its country e.g London doesn’t count.

A couple of people who've sent me anwsers haven't passed on any questions. Even though all questions are answerable, it's in the rules for this that you must use a pass. In some other versions of the game (one with tougher questions) then there's a points bonus for not passing, but not in this game.

You can pass on one question and score a 0 for that question. No bonus is given for holding on to your pass, so you might as well use it. You MUST use a pass

This doesn't make sense - here you've said you can use a pass, you might as well use a pass and then you must use a pass.

Would it be better to reword that as:

You MUST pass on one question and score a 0 for that question.

I'm guessing there might be some debate on this one.  Surely, it's any word(s) that are placed after the place name.  Such as Academicals after Hamilton.

that's what I think.  it's when the place name forms the whole team name but it has more than two words (eg whether York would count if a team was called, simply, New York) that is the subject of our debate.

Has to be.  How is York suffixed onto the name of a place to make the name of a team?  New York YANKEES would work, but please.  Must be a level.

First results suggest otherwise (although others agree with the defence).  I guess it's similar to London Stanstead...

I've walked from the Hilton to the Strip - I have to agree with Claw, there's no way you can count it as on a Strip hotel
The Hilton is on the strip monorail as a stop, that makes it a strip hotel IMO

The Monorail is the Las Vegas Monorail not the Strip Monorail

And the Hilton Grand Vacations Club is not The Hilton

I figured we wouldn't get any controversy to the football question but...

ItsMrAlex2u's anwser was just one word - Hilton. Of the two Hilton hotels, one is known as Hilton Grand Vacations CLub (on Strip), one is known as Las Vegas Hilton (off strip). Am not sure which one ItsMrAlex2u meant but by a stroke of dumb luck the fact that he just stated Hilton and the on strip hotel begins with that word and the off-strip one doesn't I'm going to let his answer stand.

1. If that's how they are credited then they are valid answers.

2. Just because they aren't credited with a surname doesn't mean they don't have one.

3. I contend that Santa's Little Helper is a Simpson and that God does not indeed have a surname.

Whos SURNAME is not simpson.

If surnames can be googled to prove they exist, answer can be accepted. Otherwise the answer is no better than the Hilton Hotel on the strip

In The Simpsons question it doesn't say you must give a surname it just said 'who's surname is not simpson'. Santas Little Helper may be a member of the Simpson family but his name is Santa's Little Helper, i'm going to let that slide. All the others (with the exception of Enda) do not have surnames and/or are reffered to simply as Comic Book Guy, Fat Tony etc. Mondatoo has taken a bit of a bashing thus far (and it doesn't get much better tbh in the later questions) and i'm going to let Edna go on this one.

Updated Scores:

That question didn't change a lot, Wardonkey still leads the way with a perfect score, although he's used his pass.

Doh!

Santas Little Helper – Suzanne, BobAlike

Aces:

God – Kinboshi (very thin value bet, nh)

Ralph Wiggum – Rod Paradise
Edna – Mondatoo
Fat Tony – Jery onMW
Todd Flanders – ItsMrAlex2u
Kang – Matt674
Sideshow Bob – Rex008

from wiki: "Homer's Enemy" is one of the darkest episodes of The Simpsons and is a favorite of several members of the production staff, including Bill Oakley, Josh Weinstein, Matt Groening, as well as The Office creator Ricky Gervais. Although Grimes makes his only appearance in this episode, he was later named one of the "Top 25 Simpsons Peripheral characters" by IGN.

this, apart from the hilton bit

if the question was for example

name a simpsons character whose hat is not red

you couldn't go around saying that people were correct when they named characters who don't have a hat. it's a simple case of following the structural rules of the english language. correct answers must be characters who have a surname and that surname cannot be simpson just as in my other example answers would have to be characters who have a hat and that hat must not be red

you should get a discretionary point though if you picked a character that wasnt related to the simpsons and it turned out that was their second name was simpson, i'd question the competency of the writers if they did that.

edit- i mean you shouldnt get a point for it, or an ace, or a pass or however this game works!

Probably because there is also a team simply known as 'Rangers'.  Can't see any other reason why not.

having read the pm I have to say that it's not going to take long to prepare the objection. it's just wrong, plain and simple.

Dino, I can't believe you're even considering marking that as correct. it's not a suffix in any way, shape or form; it's the second word of a 2 word name of the location of the club

As i remember it was on an old episode of the detectives with Jasper Carrott when i first heard the question to name all the suffixes - and the answer i gave was included. Have seen it as a quiz question on the internet also and it was included every time there as well. Though the answers change near enough every year depending on which teams yoyo between league 2 and the conference.

As for the overall scheme of things its unlikely i'm going to trouble the winners knowing some of the other answers i put so i'm just going to go with what Dino says........

Oh and the February payment for the monkey madness is due at the end of the week and i've not done bad this month dont forget ;whistle;

yeah hence both incorrect, i just remember doing a footy team suffix quiz and Palace being one, it's also the anwser to which English football team has the most letters in its name until you get to a vowel.

Also Palace listed as a suffix here FWIW: http://www.onpedia.com/encyclopedia/list-of-british-football-club-suffixes

I thought we were gonna get all technical about what a suffix was.

Is a suffix not usually a part of a larger word rather than a word?

Also the example of a 'non suffix' was confusing.

You would have thought that somewhere there would be a current total, but can I find it? The 44m figure came from data in June 2008, before the paperback was published! It only needs another 2m to get into the top 15 by my reckoning.

I'm going to phone Bloomsbury in the morning :).

I'm going to phone Bloomsbury in the morning :).

I will probably live to regret this but......

I will volunteer to come up the quiz for next week.

Now, must just make a few notes regarding those who baited the ref the other day........

Always thought that.

Deserved bonus points imo.

Still unhaappy about my disgraceful Hilton treatment, and the moral fibre of the quiz master giving in to such blatant bullyng......
Ok I have slept on this and thought about it throughout the day. I have looked at the issue from your prospective and have to say "whatever" I totally agree with you.

Yes it is the same. That's why I chose that piece because of the different name in the hope that people would use "castle". It obviously didn't work. I'm tempted to chuck in an appeal on Suzanne's behalf but I think she may want to fight her own battles.

Absolutely.  I only knew this for sure because google.co.jp got a penalty from Google for buying links earlier this month and it was mentioned in an article!  Yes, Google penalised itself.  Google.co.jp was trying to eat into Yahoo.co.jp's dominance in Japan (a country of over 100 million internet users).  Not only is it the main search engine, it is also the main auction site there (http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/).  Ebay has a very small presence in Japan.

I'll think about it. :)

But timing wise I don't think we can have one every week.

It takes about a week to go through the answers

So a week to go through the answers then a week for the next person to set the next one would work - Reverse Sheep Game every fortnight anyone?
