Title: University Challenge
Post by: lazaroonie on February 24, 2009, 04:16:10 PM
cant see this mentioned anywhere else, what an amazing final last night. It was billed as a one woman show - Gail Trimble had answered more questions than any other contestant in the history of the show. Manchester took an early lead, and it looked like Corpus Christi were in trouble - maybe nerves, but they were all having difficulty getting in first on the buzzer, and then even when they did, getting answers wrong.

In the end though, Ms Trimble steadied her ship and the Oxford college won thru after a titanic struggle.

I was glued to the screen. I even managed a few right answers myself.

it amazes me that such young (sometimes) people can know so much stuff!  It makes my head hurt trying to understand some of the questions yet alone having a bash at the answers.  I do get some in the heats, but semi final time, you really need to know your information that you wont use that often.

Did catch the end, gg wp CCO

My bosses son knows her. Apparantly she's a nice person - but a bit sad, because all she ever does is study.

UC is spoilt by having post-grads on it - they should have no one over 22 on the teams.

And just LOL at Paxman making out this was some David v Goliath contest by going on about how few students CC has compared to Manchester.

Great final. Ms Trimble has been getting a lot of stick on some forums apparently. Absurd. She's different class, get on her Eggheads in place of CJ imo.

Gail Trimble - my absolute hero.

She's getting a very rough ride from the Red-Tops & skanky Forum users, as did Rebecca, our Golden swimmer, but Gail is really something special, & we should be proud of her.

She very much reminds me of Jen Mason. Bright, self-effacing, articulate, knows everything, a degree in Classical Languages, even got the long hair, & bins.

Was a good final.  I thought manchester were going to romp away with it, but CC had the sprint finish and won by a fair few lengths at the end.

How excited was the names announcer towards the end though?  "Corpus CHRISTI TRIIIIIIMBLE!!"

That was very funny - I can just imagine the UC producer telling to 'get a bit excited' towards the end as it was the final and he completely went overboard.

Yeah that made me laugh.

I love University challenge even though the questions are incredibly hard, I get 1 in 5 of the maths questions and I have a sodding degree in the subject.

I do like the new-style questions they've had on recently - the ones based around making words out of postcodes and last night's kit/skit, peculate/speculate questions. Good to see them try and work something out rather than recite stuff from memory.

I once answered a question correctly when watching this show in 2003.  Since then to make it more fun to watch, I play a slightly different version .  I attempt to guess what subjects each of the contestants study,  I once guessed 6/8. That is a night I will always remember, I was proud of myself for days after.

I got 23 once.  I felt dead clever.

Go, Oxford classicists! Makes me wish I hadn't squandered my time there taking drugs and playing guitar. Sort of.

No need to regret. You have a achieved international stardom - appearing on Live TV, across the world, this Sunday, with Miss Mason.

Please, both of you, don't wreck the studio. Or the Channel.

That would be a tough feat from home! I'm sure they will cause royal havoc on the virtual felt - and I'm really looking forward to watching them strut their "poker skillz"!

Go Girls!

Don't underestimate their ability to wreck the Studio from home. That Jen is a wrong 'un - she has what we used to call an "evil eye".

Avoid.

It wasn't Trimble - it shouldn't matter.
