Title: How do you describe a gambler ?
Post by: Colchester Kev on May 24, 2005, 12:46:00 AM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During a long phonecall with my brother tonight, the subject got onto gambling and the poker scene (of which he knows nothing... not that i claim to be all seeing and knowing) and he asked me what sort of people i have met, and what goes on at festivals and big tourneys etc. I had to say that on the whole the festival playing poker community are a really decent bunch, there is plenty of banter and more than its fair share of ego's, but i have never been blanked when seeking advice, and considering these guys are playing for huge cash prizes, I am yet to see any real incidents, although at the EPT at the merrion, David merhmand (i think thats his name) came very close to being thrown through the top floor window by an irate (and bloody huge) irish fella, but it was all sorted out by thomas kremser and the nicest security guy i have ever met.

Then came the question that i struggled to answer, my brother asked me to "describe" a gambler, now bearing in mind that he only ever bets on the national each year and has never shared my love of searching that elusive easy buck, i struggled for an answer... but finally offered the following.

"A gambler is a person that has a warped regard for money, he thinks nothing of risking a couple
of thousand pounds on a turn of a card, but when on the way home he stops at a garage to buy some fags, he has a right moan because the fags are 5 pence dearer than they are at his normal shop."

Well how would you describe a "gambler" to someone who asked ?  , what makes it an even more difficult question to answer is that most poker players dont fit the above answer, so are poker players a different type of gambler ?   hmmmmm  seems like an impossible question to answer.

I would just have to say i dont kow. I cant consider myself to be a gambler. I play poker but i dont consider myself to be wreckless or loose with my money. And thats what i argue with just about everybody in my small little town. They think that because i play poker i must lose 1000's of pounds because im gambling! Im not though.

Everyone takes risks to some extent. Good business people take risks regularly but only when the rewards outweigh the risk. If they were to allow the risk to outweigh the reward then they would not only be taking risks but they would be gambling.

I don't consider myself a gambler either.  I play poker with a positive expectation (long term), and don't participate or enjoy pit games or sports betting for large amounts of money.  I do have the odd sports bet for a few quid, but nothing more than I can afford to 'spend'.  If I don't have an 'edge' then it doesn't interest me.

Although there are also lots of poker players who are definitely gamblers through and through.

Or maybe I've got it all wrong, and successful gamblers only play when they perceive that they have an advantage?  it's only losing gamblers who rely more on the chance element.

Would people consider stock market investors to be gamblers?

probably something along the lines of "Stockbroker?, Well..make my noodle Curry flavoured! That's the silliest thing I've ever heard! Why would you broker stock? You shag it, you do"

i think poker has rescued a lot of degenerate gamblers.

A lot of gamblers are intelligent people with good heads for numbers which fits perfectly with poker.

It stopped me being a terminal donator to the house anyway.

The 'fearless' players that are well respected are the ones who are the gamblers.  Willing to risk it all to win big.  I guess that's an asset - and it's that thin line between genius and madness.

At the end of the day life is a gamble, at some point you have to make a choice and it may cause you hurt or harm, but your expectation was posative to start.
