It is likely the journalist already has the thing half written, and what you say in the interview will have very little affect on the direction of the finished piece. It is likely the journalist already has the thing half written, and what you say in the interview will have very little affect on the direction of the finished piece. Lol, truth is we've generally barely finished preparing the questions before we interview anyone, let alone written half of it! Also after a couple of questions the subject says something far more interesting and we run with that angle rather than asking most of the questions we've prepared! Although to be fair most player profiles of UK players go a little something like this... - discovered poker by watching Late Night Poker - played a few home games with mates lost in the beginning - slowly got better by reading a book or having more dedication than their friends - played a few casino tournaments, ran well - eventually win something big - profit? There is a tremendous difference between a journalist in the traditional sense and a poker journalist where it comes to interviews and the like. The poker journalist is actually under a lot of pressure to write an interview that will keep everyone, especially the player and their sponsors, very happy because there is almost always an affiliate/advertising partnership with said player and sponsor. For example, lets say Nick or I were asked to interview Phil (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=708) Hellmuth (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=708) and just before we started he did a line of coke, stamped on a puppy and groped a cocktail waitress - that's the sort of dirt that would get a proper journo a pay rise and a pat on the back, but it would probably mean a poker journalist would never work in the industry again if it made the print (I know a couple of people for whom that has happened because they told the truth about the wrong people and it almost happened to me a few years ago when I broke a big story that painted a poker room in a bad light) So we dont always make it up as we go along and in advance, sometimes we actually have to do the opposite and edit what the players have said to protect them and ourselves. Perhaps that explains the conspiracy of total silence in the Industry Press as to the Poker Trillion scandal. See you Sunday. And we won't be discussing Trillion. ;) Title: Re: interview need help Post by: thetank on March 05, 2009, 01:01:27 PM That's why I never read poker magazines. ;ashamed;
Title: Re: interview need help Post by: tikay on March 05, 2009, 01:18:06 PM That's why I never read poker magazines. ;ashamed; To be fair, you can see Barry's point. If he writes for a magazine or website which carries advertising from a particular Poker Site, it's hardly good for business to tell it how it is. Until, I'd assume, the mag gets shafted by the Poker Room. Ought to be open season then! Title: Re: interview need help Post by: Dingdell on March 05, 2009, 01:23:53 PM I agree - when I wrote for the Sun I had a great expose on a financial company that was dynamite. Great story, we sweated over it, did undercover stuff, the whole thing and then at the last minute it was stopped because of the amount it spent on ads. The edictor wanted to run it but the ad editor disagreed and you don't bite the hand that feeds you.
I have been involved recently in a media story which should be exposed as a complete croc, but the papers are holding back because at the moment it's selling lots of papers. I always look at the angles behind a story, it never seems to be what it's made out to be. Title: Re: interview need help Post by: DaveShoelace on March 05, 2009, 01:50:33 PM Regarding the PT thing, just about everyone I write for did indeed get screwed over by them and the almost universal stance taken by all of them was 'lets not give these guys any publicity, good or bad'. It certainly wouldn't have been the line I adopted but I guess I can see their point, now that PT is no more (And assuming Rockem are not actually PT with a new name) I don't see why it isn't open season now.
From my own personal point of view, I don't particularly want to try and expose major shocking stories anyway, mainly because I am a poker player who got into journalism not the other way around, so I don't have that ruthless desire for a big scoop. I personally want the poker industry to thrive, so I am not that keen to ruin anyone or piss anyone off unless its in the interests of the wider poker industry. That does make me a bit of a wuss I guess, but I'm a wuss who gets lots of work, thankfully (And genuinely) most of the people and poker rooms I have worked with have been pretty stand up guys and the handful of them I dont respect I have managed to avoid. Keep an eye out for my expose on Tikay, Flushy is his love child, Kev is not really from Colchester and Tighty bets middle pair shockers!
