Title: petrol in my diesel!
Post by: sovietsong on March 09, 2009, 08:46:15 PM
Earlier today I put 10 litres of petrol in my diesel car! Spoke to the RAC and they said it would cost me 200 quid, upset at this I called a mate who has a mechanical friend and he said just fill it up with diesel and drive steady! Up for saving 200 I did just that! 30miles later and the car is running fine! Anybody else made this stupid mistake and rectified it in this way?

The diesel nozzle is a tad big to fit a petrol tank for this reason.

If you haven't started the engine you could get it drained for a lot less than £200 and if there is some diesel in and only a small amount of petrol then topping up and running it will probably work.

Yeah been there, done that ( well not me strictly ;)).

Keep topping up for about a week or two to dilute then run it down to near empty.

Not sure if i imagined it - but for the first week the engine felt slower but after topping up and running down I've had no problems - and i think we put about 10 litres in...(50 litre capacity)

Should be fine IMO - and gl!

Sigh Ling here...

Not strictly true! Petrol in a modern common rail diesel engine can be a very expensive mistake! Especially when you drive down the motorway afterwards non the wiser until ...... chug.chug...die!

New engine please - fortunatley its an insured risk so just my £200 excess to pay!

The advice of diluting is excellent - do that!

I would stick a bottle or 2 of an injector lubricant additive into the tank, because the petrol will reduce the lubricant properties of the diesel and may damage the fuel pump.
