Title: US Dollar Post by: phatbhoy on March 10, 2009, 05:18:45 PM Anyone have any idea's whether it is best to buy dollars just now or wait until later in the summer say July August? I know it is impossible to predict but it does seem to still be going down a tiny bit and I'd rather get it at 1.4 just now than say 1.25 or so if it does drop further! So sick had them at 1.7 last October and sold them!
Or does anyone have any dollars they want to sell at a decent rate looking for 5k. thanks Steven Title: Re: US Dollar Post by: 77dave on March 10, 2009, 05:20:21 PM Vegas casino was offering $1.28 for a pound yday

ok so it sucks - but will be nice to ship a WSOP seat this year if the intention is to cash out! Title: Re: US Dollar Post by: dousche on March 11, 2009, 02:33:36 PM Is it just total guesswork basically That's basically how financial markets work. in theory it should be a random walk (ie equal probabilities of going up and down) because of arbitrage agents buying/selling as soon as info comes out that suggests differently. in practice, info isnt perfect and it takes a bit of time for info to be dispersed through the system. however, any info you get from reading the paper or watching the news is not enough to give you an edge on what the big money movers are doing - they have more info so will make better decisions so you have no idea if its going up or down. id buy just before i go and sell as soon as i get back to attempt to avoid massive swings Title: Re: US Dollar Post by: Karabiner on March 11, 2009, 06:34:46 PM Buying low and selling high is a rather good modus operandum.

Title: Re: US Dollar Post by: WSOPaduki on March 28, 2009, 02:38:30 PM Here's a thought, if you've got a neteller account.
Deposit now onto pokerstars. Todays rate is £1 = $1.43 then when you're near departure date, transfer to Neteller (I think they transfer at whatever the rate is with no commision) then withdraw english £ from Neteller and transfer to $ using bank of some sort. That way if the rate goes down from now until the time you go, you'll already have compensated for the difference. Basically locking in todays rate. Obviously the down side is if the rate goes up. That theory sounds good in my head. Any thoughts Title: Re: US Dollar Post by: WSOPaduki on March 28, 2009, 02:53:41 PM I'm surprised 77dave hasn't figured out a way of making a little bit of cash exchanging $ somehow. He should be a one stop exchange shop.
Come on Dave get on the ball. Title: Re: US Dollar Post by: mondatoo on March 28, 2009, 02:59:50 PM Ive just ordered £4k's worth of dollars with flybe to be deliverd mid may at 1.435 which is decent

If it doesn't reach that price they swallow the loss. If that is the way they are planning on making the money.. I wouldn't be giving them any business. Let's say the dollar rises another 20% in the next 3 months. They could do their absolute bollocks. I wouldn't trust them them with my money in order to get an extra 5% of dollars. Much more chance of them going bust than 5% imo. Title: Re: US Dollar Post by: byronkincaid on March 28, 2009, 05:26:00 PM just seems more likely to me that this company would use derivatives to lock in future rates, add on a profit margin and sell to the general public with no access to them rather than putting their finger in the wind and having a guess.
Title: Re: US Dollar Post by: phatbhoy on March 28, 2009, 06:05:55 PM my guess would be they buy on the futures market, so they buy the rate at say 1.52 for mid may sell it at 1.5 and make 2c plus your interest for the 2-3 months. Pretty risk free simple way to trade, if the dollar goes up they make more if the dollar goes down they have already prebooked it on the market. I am guessing though?

I am guessing though? 1) your interest for 3 months will be how much exactly? (clue the number will be the roundest of all the numbers) 2) An option to buy or sell at a price costs something - where does that money come from? However I did notice this attractive referral programme on their site: Get a FREE carton of Cornish Clotted Cream for each friend that places an order Title: Re: US Dollar Post by: Karabiner on March 29, 2009, 08:56:43 PM my guess would be they buy on the futures market, so they buy the rate at say 1.52 for mid may sell it at 1.5 and make 2c plus your interest for the 2-3 months.
