Title: Google chrome Post by: ItsMrAlex2u on March 23, 2009, 07:49:44 PM Just downloaded the google browser and am taking it for a test drive.
Many people use it? Pros/cons? Cheers Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: kinboshi on March 23, 2009, 07:52:10 PM I tried it, but prefer Firefox because of the add-ons that are available so I can customise it to work how I want.
Chrome is pretty good though. Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Jon MW on March 23, 2009, 08:26:04 PM I'd agree with Kin.
I think Chrome might actually be better but the added functionality of the add ons make Firefox better for the time being. If they add stuff like that to Chrome then I might switch over to Chrome completely. Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: kinboshi on March 23, 2009, 08:37:10 PM I'd agree with Kin. I think Chrome might actually be better but the added functionality of the add ons make Firefox better for the time being. If they add stuff like that to Chrome then I might switch over to Chrome completely. I think that a lot of the good elements of Chrome (such as the separation of each tab, so if one crashes, the rest of them continue to work), the JavaScript engine, etc., will be brought over to Firefox. They might even converge into one browser eventually. Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Graham C on March 24, 2009, 08:20:33 PM Firefox seems to be hiding my downloads. Any ideas? I download something, go to the folder where it was and it's no longer there!

May I also suggest that you download the add-on called 'Download Statusbar' - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/26 That might help with the issue you're having, and it'll help you going forward anyway. Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: kinboshi on March 24, 2009, 08:24:38 PM What happens in Firefox when you hit Ctrl+J ?
Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Graham C on March 24, 2009, 08:26:58 PM the downloads box comes up ::)
The files are listed, but I can't open them from there. They download fine, but once they've completed downloading, they insta move/delete. I 've seen it with the downloaded to folder open and the downloads box open, the completed download goes where it should, then bang, it's gone. Tried searching for the file on my comp but it's not found. Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: kinboshi on March 24, 2009, 08:36:26 PM Does this happen with all files, or just some in particular? It's not your antivirus software quarantining them is it?
Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Graham C on March 24, 2009, 08:45:55 PM Ah, now there's a possibly related issue. AVG has stopped working, sort of and it wont uninstall. Could be related. Been trying to sort out AVG first but have been unsuccessful so far
Do you know where it quarantines things too? Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: kinboshi on March 24, 2009, 08:48:21 PM Ah, now there's a possibly related issue. If you're having problems with it, might be a good time to move to avast as well? Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Graham C on March 24, 2009, 08:55:58 PM If only I could download it ;)
I've tried btw. Best try in that old dog IE I suppose Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: kinboshi on March 24, 2009, 09:03:49 PM If only I could download it ;) I've tried btw. Best try in that old dog IE I suppose Before you do anything else, have you tried running Firefox in safe mode? Go to the start menu and find Mozilla Firefox. There should be a shortcut to start it in safe mode. That will run it without any plugins or add-ons. If that doesn't make a difference, then it might well be your antivirus software. Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: gatso on March 24, 2009, 09:08:26 PM If only I could download it ;) I've tried btw. Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Graham C on March 24, 2009, 09:42:58 PM Didn't work in safe mode. Didn't work with IE, guessing it's my AV. Tried to uninstall it but it won't. Tried to repair it, but it won't. Not sure what else to do. It's not even running apparently
Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: kinboshi on March 24, 2009, 09:52:46 PM OK. Reboot your computer in safe mode (start it up and keep pressing the F8 key until it goes into safe mode).
Then when you've got into windows, uninstall AVG then. Then report back... Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Graham C on March 24, 2009, 10:00:34 PM Gonna have to wait a bit, playing this poker mularky at the moment.
Will report back though ;hattip; Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Pelham Boy on March 24, 2009, 10:05:18 PM Gonna have to wait a bit, playing this poker mularky at the moment. Been trying to sort out AVG first but have been unsuccessful so far Do you know where it quarantines things too? This screams virus/worm to me - fairly common thing for new viruses to do is kill the AV, and kill things like windows updates, etc. Killing downloads I haven't heard of, but possible. Conficker is a possibility. Wiki page here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conficker). Then again, your computer may just be screwed... Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: kinboshi on March 25, 2009, 09:35:07 AM Rolback to a restore point?
Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Graham C on March 25, 2009, 09:36:02 AM OK, I tried in safe mode this morning (because it was too late by the time I finished last night ;) ) and the uninstall program says that it can't uninstall because it's not installed. But, I have a start menu thingy for AVG and there's a folder on the comp with loads of AVG files in. When I try and reinstall it, it asks for a licence number which I don't have.
Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: kinboshi on March 25, 2009, 09:36:49 AM Don't worry - install avast instead.
Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Graham C on March 25, 2009, 09:37:58 AM Tried an online scan at Symantic and everything was ok. Apart from this, the computer runs fine
Don't worry - install avast instead. lol, I can't get it downloaded! Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: kinboshi on March 25, 2009, 09:40:22 AM Tried an online scan at Symantic and everything was ok. I have UAC turned off for HEM, was that just to get it running initially Byron? I assumed that it needed to be off all the time. I'll turn it back on and see how I get on. It was on my laptop which I hardly use Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Graham C on March 25, 2009, 09:56:44 AM I've a copy of Avast running now (don't ask) and am scanning just in case. Then I'll look into removing AVG.
Cheers, I'm sure I'll get there. Not doing anything before the big 10am announcement though ;) Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: kinboshi on March 25, 2009, 09:58:01 AM Graham - thread well and truly hijacked!
:D Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: TheChipPrince on March 25, 2009, 09:59:41 AM System restore did nothing?
Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Graham C on March 25, 2009, 10:00:38 AM meh, seemed the logical thing to do :)
Sorry OP, lol, I can't even remember who it was or what it was about now :D System restore did nothing? Not tried, scared to and not sure when to restore too. It's been going on a while, I've just ignored it as I don't often download things. Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: TheChipPrince on March 25, 2009, 10:03:34 AM meh, seemed the logical thing to do :) Sorry OP, lol, I can't even remember who it was or what it was about now :D System restore did nothing? Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Graham C on March 25, 2009, 10:10:13 AM Does it restore any of my documents or anything like that? I don't want to lose things.
When do I restore back too? Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: kinboshi on March 25, 2009, 10:12:20 AM Does it restore any of my documents or anything like that? I don't want to lose things. When do I restore back too? If it's working, don't restore. No, you don't lose data - it just goes back to a point and puts the system back as it was (so the programs you've installed since won't be installed, etc.) Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: gatso on March 25, 2009, 10:25:16 AM Sorry OP, lol, I can't even remember who it was or what it was about now :D don't worry, it was mralex, he only uses the forum for the reverse sheep game anyway Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: TheChipPrince on March 25, 2009, 10:42:56 AM Does it restore any of my documents or anything like that? I don't want to lose things. When do I restore back too? No it not delete any photos, word documents etc etc you have done, just sorts out programs etc like Kin says... I had lots of trouble with IE 7 at one time, simple restore worked a treat, i'd do it to about 7-10 days ago... Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: ItsMrAlex2u on March 25, 2009, 12:15:07 PM Sorry OP, lol, I can't even remember who it was or what it was about now :D don't worry, it was mralex, he only uses the forum for the reverse sheep game anyway Just LoL I would like to argue the point, but I cant !! SO you all like Chrome then, thats good. (Btw I have deicded against converting to Chrome, you cant install toolbars and I would miss my Pirate Bay and Stumbleupon toolbars.) I did quite like it though and the fact that all tabs run independently is a big plus. Will have another look at the weekend. (after the Reverse sheep game obv) Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Graham C on March 26, 2009, 01:50:40 PM Update
Did a system restore back to the 20th, it was the furthest back I could go, and so far it seems ok. Unless it was a Windows issue, the only thing I can think of that may have been was that I installed Thunderbird to check work emails recently. The timing does seem to fit in, but I can't find any threads related to Thunderbird and my problem on t'internet. If it's not that, I guess I'll be experiencing the issue again soon but at least this time I'll be aware of things I run. Glad it's sorted though. Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: kinboshi on March 26, 2009, 02:04:09 PM Now install avast.
Oh, and glad it's all working again! Title: Re: Google chrome Post by: Graham C on March 26, 2009, 02:10:59 PM Will do, fingers crossed but AVG even seems to be uninstalling properly this time.
