Title: broadband help
Post by: lazaroonie on March 26, 2009, 06:33:16 PM
yes...even the great and good need some advice sometime :)

something funny has been happening to my broadband - it was never the quickest to be honest, but in the last few days it has got really slow. I ran some tests, which told me it was running at approx 280kbps. woiw.

I then go to www.samknows.com which tells me that i am only guaranteed 512kbps because of my location. this is clearly nonense since up until recently it was running at up to 2meg. Also, when I put in my phone number it goes thru all the potential providers and they also say the maximum speed is 512kbps. Even those providers offering LLU (Sky, O2 etc) say 512KBPS.

it is as if my line/area has been downgraded. The speed I am getting now is frankly unusable - I had a faster connection when I had an ISDN line.

This is a business product too - it costs around 30 quid per month - when I see that berk from BT on the telly blabbing on about offering speeds of up to 50meg, I just want to punch him in the face.

Blimey, that is slow.  You'd be better off with a dongle connection rather than that (assuming you can get coverage).

Just checked my cable connection speed, and download is 9872 kbps (1.23MB/s) and upload is 483 kbps (60.4kB/s).  So my upload doesn't look too great.

My max speed is supposed to be 1mb but is typically more in the regeon of 400/500kbps. For the last fortnight, it went down to less than 100kbps. (Horrible)

Then, without warning, I'm back to a heady 400/500. Bliss!

Spoke too soon. Latest reading 208kbps....

Try a speedtest from here (http://test.speedtester.bt.com) lazaroonie.
It should give you your connection speed, download speed, and profile.

The profile should be slightly below  the connection speed,if it is a lot lower it indicates an intermittent line fault or noise on the line has lowered the profile.

If the connection speed stays good the profile should catch up in 2 or 3 days.

If the connection speed and profile are low it may indicate a line fault or fault in your own wiring,an unfiltered telephone or sky box or the like.

If the connection speed is good and the profile is good it usually indicates congestion at your exchange.

To get the best speeds try and get your router as close to the main phone socket as possible. Moving my router off an extension cable improved my speed by over 50%
