Title: What should we do here?
Post by: The Camel on April 09, 2009, 02:06:06 PM
In an outbuilding of our house a fox has taken up residence.

She has had a litter of 4 or 5 cubs who are as cute as cute can be.

But unfortunately the mother has had some sort of accident and is basically on three legs at the moment. It looks a very bad injury which will not cure itself.

Should we step in and help by leaving some food out for the mother and cubs or let nature take its course?

I'd contact the RSPCA and see what advice they give?

Does Mrs Camel want a new fur coat?

If not, RSPCA is probably the best call.

Shoot 'em!!

Knock down the outbuilding.

Build some trendy flats.

You're welcome.

Leave some food out Keith.

We have a resident fox at Feltham, he was in a bad way as a cub, so we fed him every night, but he's a big fat bugger now, the only problem being he's depenent upon us feeding him. We have a ferral cat, too, same story, & the cat & the fox sit side by side outside the front foor, every night, waiting to be fed, as good as gold.

I'm just worried if they all become dependent on us feeding them, a) what happens when we go to Vegas for 6 weeks? b) will they become easy prey for the local "drag" hunt?

Obviously we are going to call the experts, but in general I wondered if it's best to interfer in these situations.

Lol - visions of a bunch of toffs dressed in womens clothing on horses chasing foxes.

If it's a genuine drag hunt they chase a runner, not foxes.

Feeding now while the cubs need the help should give the vixen time to heal. If she heals OK she'll be able to fend for herself eventually - even with a limp urban foxes have lots of food opportunities. The cubs'll leave eventually anyway. If she's still dependant on you come Vegas time do you not have a friend/neighbour who'd help?

It is a drag hunt.

But the dogs are known to take cats at times, so a tame and lame fox would be an easy target obv.

We live in the countryside and there isn't a neighbour close enough to make it an easy job for them.

Pah ... just a blatant "I have a big pile in the country, complete with outbuildings" brag post imo. ;)

Sorry that it is causing you distress, I would contact the RSPCA rather than sitting in the car making noises at the poor beasts.

keith if you live in the country either call the rspca or shoot them

what ever you do dont feed them

by feeding them you will make them lazy

and if for any reason you cant feed them they will go after easy prey

such as chicken coups

where they will slaughter the whole coup rather than just taking what they need
