Title: New Phone help?
Post by: Girgy85 on April 13, 2009, 05:15:19 PM
Right i am considering getting a swanky new phone and i would like some advice please guys.

I would like a phone that has internet, good music player, touch screen. I would also like a contract that is under £40 (inc Insurance)

I am considering the following phones and would like some pros and cons if you have one....

Blackberry Storm 9500

I like the look of this one but i dont like deals available on Vodafone. Do you get unlimited internet included in their contracts?

What is the battery life like, what are the features like to use, any niggles?

T-Mobile G1 Black

I like this phone and i also like the deal that T-Mobile are offering ( UNLIMITED internet, UNLIMITED texts, 800 minutes)

What is the battery life like, what are the features like to use, any niggles?

Also when you are accepted for a contract i got told you pay your first bill after 14 days then another bill after another 30 days? Why is this? And is it easy to transfer your number over?

iPhone 3G

I am currently on O2 and i like this network. I like the iPhone but i heard you cant send or receive video messages. Any other problems? I like the £35 contract (£34.26 a month / 24 months 600 mins, 500 texts, Unlimited Data and WiFi)

Again What is the battery life like, what are the features like to use, any niggles? What will be the major difference between 8GB and 16GB? Apps, Do you pay on your bill or via the internet like iTunes?

So any advice would be helpful cheers!!

You can with an MMS application, but start of June the OS will be upgraded to 3.0 . MMS is a feature, in fact everything bar flash player will be included.
Apps are paid for via itunes
Battery life is shit if you have 3g and location switched On, and use it a lot. But if you switch them off till needed I can get 3 days use with about 1 hours worth of talk. Leave them on and probably get 8 hours max.
Only niggle is waiting for Junes update, apart from that I love it!!

The major difference between between 8gig and 16 gig is 8 gig :) depends how much music you have, would recommend 16gig if lots

Has iPhone got sat nav or does that require an app? How much are apps? Any useful ones?

I will only have 500 songs max so would you recomend the 8 gig?

I don't think you'll go wrong with any of them. I have the G1 and think it'as brilliant.  The battery life isn't great though. but I don't know what the others are like.

If you are a geek, and want additional features such as wireless tethering, seemless google account integration, and a hardware keyboard as well as the touch screen, then the G1 is an excellent choice.

Has iPhone got sat nav or does that require an app? How much are apps? Any useful ones? You will find an APP for nearly everything you can possibly do with a phone and then some, cost from Free to max £4 for the most popular games i.e. Metal Gear Solid I think is £3.49. At the moment 1st person sat nav is not possible i.e. TOM TOM but come June it is expected if they can sort out the legality of map ownership and software, they have been waiting for TOM TOM to release an APP and this tooo is expected in June I am led to believe.

I will only have 500 songs max so would you recomend the 8 gig? Easliy store 500 songs/Videos and Applications, if you get near the 2000 mark then a 16 gig would be optimum

Its not touch screen. The sat nav on the g1 is the same as the curve if you get google maps, which is awesome

You get your internet access via the phone and then it acts as a wireless router and any number of computers can then access the internet via this.  Useful in emergencies or when you're out and about with a laptop and want to connect to the internet.

iphone is 2 meg camera which is a shame, has night mode but no flash, it is a good 2 meg camera however but for todays technology would expect at least 5 meg

"It is awkward to use the keyboard and phone at the same time" (sigh)

Why do they make phones with slide-out keyboards? All the other input methods on the touchscreen phones are faster and less fiddly, like Block-recognizer and Transcriber and even the onscreen keyboards. If I could pull it out of my HTC and bin it I would.

I think it's excellent.  Leaves the whole of the screen for display, and you can type much more quickly and accurately on a hardware keyboard than a soft-keyboard.  You can always use a soft-keyboard on the G1 if you really want to as well.

Oh and a lot of those reviews are incorrect.  The G1 does support Microsoft Exchange for one.

"The bigger issue is that the bottom section of the G1 makes it awkward to hold the phone when typing messages, since your right hand doesn't quite have the full range of motion. It definitely affected the speed and accuracy of typing."

Does the reviewer have only one hand?  Did Abu Hamza write that review?

I have the G1 and its a fantastic phone.  I have T-Mobile contract where I have always on Internet and the texts n calls allowance every month.

Everything Kin has said pretty much sums it up (see other mobile phone post somewhere) the battery life isnt excellent, but I have an in car charger so just charge as I go if I am out and about.  I paid my 1st bill about 14 days after my contact started and was able to transfer my existing mobile phone number by requesting my pac code from previous provider and gave it to t-mobile and they had me up n running on my existing number within 48 hours.

I just love this phone its amazing it does everything but wash the dishes for me.

Also, where the G1 is behind in terms of applications or any short-comings of the OS, this will be rectified as the open-source nature of the software and the might of Google behind it means that it's going to be continuously improving.  They announced today an imminent update of the OS with lots of new features.

If all you want is to listen to music, watch some videos as well as text and talk, then I wouldn't recommend the G1.

Work gives us a mobile and this year it is a Blackberry. I also have the G1 which is my personal phone. The Berry I have is no where near as good as the G1 from my personal experience.

All this talk has made me check when I last upgraded my handset.

2005!!!  ;gobsmacked;

So what handset would people recommend if you mainly just want to listen to music and browse the internet on it.

Because I have a worrying feeling that the iPhone works quite well for these criteria but I really don't want to be tied to iTunes.

Is it best to go into a store and are you likely to negotiate the right deal for you or wont they budge? I like a phone but not the price plan or i like the price plan but then have to pay quite a lump for the handset. Are the stores likely to tailor a deal to suit you?
