Flushy asks "why a goose"?

Goose is a variation on the Latin "goo" (timid feathered animal), and it was not until the mid sixteenth century that the plural of "goo" became accepted use - "goose". ("Goos" would not work, of course). The Annual Fair in Nottngham - "Goose Fair" started in 1647.

It's all true Flushy. At the time "goo" was first termed, it was the only feathered "animal", as Ducks & birds were not invented until a lot later.

Geese are well hard!!!!!! The Romans used them as 'guard dogs'. Next time a goose wants afight I will give her your name.

To be serious for a moment, geese are still, to this day, used as "Guard Dogs" in East Africa. They are kept in a pen at the entrance to a property. They can't do you any harm, but they make one helluva noise if they see a stranger, in effect they are a security alarm.

I don't like geese, never have

I take my daughter to feed the ducks on a local river and the Canadian Geese come along and stand there hissing and coming closer and closer, beaks at the ready

a strange phobia I have, really

So who invented Ducks and birds? I thought geese where birds, jeez, 27 years of my life has been proven to be a lie!

Ducks were invented in 1372, in Bombay, and were imported to Europe in 1544. Aylesbury later become the headquarters of The British Duck Federation.

They are stll used at the Johnny Walkers Distillery as well (they are fed the grain after all the booze has been extracted).

A few are killed for Xmas & AFAIK the staff draw lots for them.

I used to visit a pub called "the dancing duck" On the bar was an up turned tin can upon which a small duck danced continualy. "Does that duck ever stop dancing?" I asked the landlord, "Yes" he replied, "But only if the candle under the tin goes out"
