Title: Where did I go today? (A picture quiz... kinda!)
Post by: RioRodent on April 16, 2009, 06:48:14 PM
So having recently returned to full time employment, I find myself spending half the day driving around this green and pleasant land... well a large portion of the civilised, inhabitable areas anyway!

I often see things and think, "That's interesting, I wonder what that is?" Or thoughts to that effect. So I have decided to carry a camera with me, take a pic and stick it on here and see if any of you folks recognise where it is / what it is etc.

Without further ado...

Today's first mystery pic is in Gloucestershire, [apparently] visible from the M5, between J13 & J14, although this pic was taken from the nearest village. It is a monument, built in 1863...

And this rather grand old fire station is in a historic city on the A4...

Answers on a postcard to the usual address!

I was going to say Bath too.  Failing that, Reading?  A lot of buildings in Reading are made from Bath stone

Actually, that doesn't look like Reading's fire station.

Well what a dull, damp, dreary day! This was the nearest thing to interesting that I encountered today...

Nothing special I guess, you see little churches all over but it did get me wondering just what a 'Congrgational' church is? As for where it is... well today's travels took me to Northampton, Milton Keynes and Winslow. The panel in the middle tells us it is The Selbie Memorial Congregational Church... sooo David, which congregation worships in church like this?

I did also see as nice a collection of thatched cottages in one village that I had ever seen, in Botolph Claydon... but unfortunately I was in 'let's get home, it's Friday afternoon' mode and couldn't be bothered to stop!

Another week, another traffic jam... today's solitary destination was about 70 miles from home (just west of Oxford) and sounds like it could have been in Plymouth. In fact it took me 3 hours to get there, I could have gotten to Plymouth quicker!!! So, there's two clues.

For two extra points and just to get you in the right town, here's a couple of pics of some old clocks... if you can't identify them, get young Mr Kendall to have a look, I'm sure he'll reconise them instantly.

Eynsham?

All the correct words [for the bonus points], but not necessarily in the correct order - if you view the pics from top down.

No, 10 miles west of Oxford (Witney) is where I live... not the destination.

Then it's my mistake, I thought the first one was Kings Cross... but then I'm just a country boy.

Harry Potter is at Kings Cross

Although apparently JK Rowling ballsed up somewhat in her first Harry Potter book. She described Euston and had that in her head while describing a beautiful station, but got the names mixed up and called it Kings Cross (a dump seemingly).

Why do I know this? Don't ask.

lol, so at Kings Cross there's half a trolly sticking out a wall that people hold and get their pictures taken next to.

Never that Rowling was writing about Euston and the movie was filmed at Reading.

sigh, the most pointless gullable tale ever it seems.  Someone told me it was filmed at Reading ages ago.  There was film crews down there at the time too.  lol, it's not even a decent thing to tell people.

Quoted from wikipedea

King's Cross is featured in the Harry Potter books, by J. K. Rowling, as the starting point of the Hogwarts Express. The train uses a secret platform 9¾ located by passing through the brick wall barrier between platforms 9 and 10.

Unfortunately, platforms 9 and 10 are in a separate building from the main station; also, rather than being adjacent so that a barrier could be between them, they are separated by two intervening tracks. Rowling intended the location to be in the main part of the station, but misremembered the platform numbering. During an interview in 2001, she indicated that she had confused King's Cross with Euston. In fact, platforms 9 and 10 at Euston are also separated by two intervening tracks.

When the films were made, the station scenes took place within the main station, with platforms 4 and 5 renumbered 9 and 10. In the film of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the exterior of the adjacent St. Pancras station was used, as its Gothic façade was considered more impressive than the real King's Cross station.

Well, no one actually got yesterday's destination... Barbican, London - there's one in Plymouth see.

So, onto today, busy, busy day today... after jobs in Stotfold and Gamlingay, I find myself here -

This is one of the nice, open, green spaces in the city centre. It was quite apt that I was here to repair a rowing machine!! [clue]

Then a funny thing happened on the way to my last job... while waiting at some traffic lights, this chap came in on a low level strafing run... you don't see that every day!!!

Note how the fast shutter speed appears to have frozen the propeller!!

The other pic - now revealed as Cambridge - had a big clue, suggesting it was somewhere refined - natural granite kerbstones. Wonderful things. Very pretty green that, with a fine building nicely framed behind it.

Well, I did see a couple of noteworthy things yesterday, but unfortunately I was unable to get a pic of either.

The first was encountered between jobs one and two, while following the TomTom magical mystery tour from Ruislip to Harrow. I'm sad to say that I now rely totally on Joanna Lumley's directions and most of the time I have no idea just where I am (hmmm, bit like the way I play poker!). Anyway, it was somewhere in the Eastcote / Pinner area, a short length of very picturesque road with a hedge down the right hand side and what I assumed to be weeping willows in the field to the left, partially overhanging the road.

Although when you compare pictures they look nothing alike, the thought that sprung to mind was that it looked like scene from the southern states of the US where they have that Spanish Moss hanging from the trees.

(http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/define-weeping-willow-1.jpg) (http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/56/95556-004-8472A55F.jpg)

Until recently, I had never left the A40 until at least past Hanger Lane when driving into London... I had no idea there were such pleasant places inside the M25!!

Then later in the day, on the way home on the M40, in the Stokenchurch area, I saw what could only be described as 'a flock' of Red Kites... there must have been 20 -25, all in the air in a group. Now anyone that travels that stretch of the M40 will regularly see these impressive birds of prey, as I have many times before, but I had never seen so many together at the same time. For some reason I assumed they would tend to be solitary, territorial birds?

Day off today... I wonder what Monday will bring?
