Title: 2 Premier Leagues
Post by: Matt50 on April 20, 2009, 01:51:13 PM
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/8006934.stm

Bad news for most clubs if this happens.  If Celtic and Rangers joined then 10 clubs will be in the 3rd league due to no fault of their own - not going to help their income is it!!!
I bet Bolton wouldnt have voted for this a few years ago when they were in the 2nd tier of English football.
Really hope this doesnt happen.

Won't happen because of UEFA never mind the other obstacles. I know there is precedent with the Cardiff and Swansea but they have been members of the English Pyramid since the 1920's and aren't allowed to qualify for european comps, which would be a stumbling block for the old firm.

The Premier League already has 2 leagues...

Would be good if they had Rangers and Celtic in different leagues - no more seething.

I would hate to have Rangers and Celtic in the Premierleague. What's the point of bringing in two teams from Scotland so they can finish mid-table every year?

Its a pointless argument, but i'd imagine mid-table would be the top end of their focus, look at the squads of the Premier Leagues bottom 6, as good as if not better than Celtic/Rangers...

Wishful thinking.

Why would 2 teams who have featured in the Deloitte & Touche Top 20 Richest Clubs reports regularly over the last 10 years suddenly fade on an additional 10-15m (PL2) or 30-40m (PL1) on top of their already good income? TV revenue's been the difference maker between the UEFA cup challengers in the EPL & Celtic, so why, if Celtic's TV revenue moved them back above the Aston Villas of the EPL would Celtic lag behind them?

* Rangers can speak for themselves - Lloyds Bank are hurting them from what I hear - BUT they might slack off on them if this move could go through.

Nice fishing. Do you really think one of the richest men in the British Isles would have invested in Celtic without this in mind? He's been quoted as saying he'll see Celtic in the EPL in his lifetime, & he doesn't call a lot wrong. (Dermot Desmond is his name http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dermot_Desmond (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dermot_Desmond))

To start off with, but they would improve year on year. They are both big clubs with big supports, in time they maybe able to challenge the top 4.

I dont think the main point is Celtic and Rangers joining - it is reducing the top 2 leagues to just 36 teams from 44 - just not on IMO

What about relegation?  How would that work?

You could say that with 10 other teams though, do Celtic and Rangers have £80-£100 Million to throw at improving their squad?  Thats a genuine question btw, I dont know myself...

I'm looking over their squads know as we speak, their bottom half Prem squads without additions...

Finish bottom of PL1 > PL2
Finish Bottom of PL2 > Champoinship
Finish Bottom of Champoinship > League 1

The Divisions name are just for example, who knows what the champoinship would be called then

Finish bottom of PL1 > PL2
Finish Bottom of PL2 > Champoinship
Finish Bottom of Champoinship > League 1

I have a little more confidence than that Dave, I reckon Celtic will stay in the Championship for a season or two.

Aside from the current situation moneywise and the extra to be gained from tv etc when joining up do you think guys who have loads of money and want to buy into the pl would rather have Man city, Newcastle etc or one of the old firm ?

If i had the money to buy a club, i would certainly look at the old firm first, regular income, massive passionate fan bases who would buy the shit from our players arses if we packaged it in green&white hooped boxes/blue boxes... no chance of ever getting relegated, European footy EVERY year AND an outside chance of one day being part of the premier league.

Now, who shall i buy, Celtic or Rangers :)

Wee clue - one up for sale (large debt to be taken into account) one not for sale.

Celtic may not be on the market but if an oil rich guy with more money than he can count makes a way over the top offer then i'd bet they'd sell up. They won't do it whilst they are in the spl as there is far less excitement/kudos for that kind of cash.

I don't think Desmond, Eddie Jordan & the other Coolmore Mafia are in it for the quick buck - if a ridiculous offer came in while high in EPL1, then aye I think you're right.
