Title: johnstone's paint trophy
Post by: gatso on April 28, 2009, 11:13:35 PM
just found out we'll be playing in this next season. I didn't even know it existed so assume we've never been in it before. what is it? does anyone care about it? do clubs get a decent turnout for games?

Its the LeagueTrophy.

Can you not remember Luton beating Scunthorpe 3-2 after extra time, 3 weeks ago? That was the final, at wembley none the less!

Oh and another small fact, its the first time a team has got to a final at wembley, and been relegated in the same season!

You sure? Didnt Boro do that in F A Cup a few years ago and Oxford Utd in Milk Cup in 1980s?

Just to add to this, nobody cares about it and these games may set your record low attendence for the season.

1985 League Cup Final - both finalists (Sunderland & Norwich) were relegated.

Johnstone Paints Trophy

The League cup for the bottom two divisions

Comp is split into north and South until the Wembley final to lower travel costs

Poorly attended in the early rounds, teams can take it less than seriously

By the time it gets to the later rounds though its the real deal for these teams, Wembley appearance, Sky TV cover it, and a money earner eg Luton this year

I remember such joys as the Simod Cup and the Zenith Data Systems Cup in the 1990s, a couple of years there was even an Anglo Italian Cup, but all these were for top two division teams

[ ] sounds great

will be nice to play something we're one of the favourites in though

anglo italian cup was quality rich. some idiot decided it would be a good idea to put charlton, millwall and pompey and the next year charlton, millwall and palace in the same group in a european comp. the old kent road was utter carnage, running battles all the way up it. obv we won the all south london group

Anglo Italian cup was great, well at least I got to see Notts County at a Wembley final.

lol @ this competition. we're home to barnet in our first ever game in the trophy, we offered them some tickets but they turned them down because they won't be able to sell them and have told us to expect about 50 to show up on the night

Such a sick brag that you got a bye in the 1st round. We had 12500 at our 1st game, tickets were only a fiver though.

Brighton were also relegated in 1983 if memory serves.
