Without Abidal and Alves (vs Rooney and possibly Ronaldo on the wings) as well as Marquez not being there at the back I can only see Man U winning. Shame, because first XI vs first XI it's Barca's game IMO.

The rest of the pitch will be pretty even but Man U will win it in the final third.

Also Ferguson has gotten so much better tactically in recent seasons. No more of that attack attack attack stuff that he failed with so miserably for years. His team can now soak up pressure and hit so hard on the break.

I expect it to be like last year's semi Vs Barca, 30-40% possession but deadly in front of goal.

Anyone expecting an open final is going to be disappointed I think. Man U 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1. An outside bet on 3 goals for Utd isn't daft if Barca have to chase the game.

Ronaldo 1st goal/1-0 Man U scorecast
Draw/Draw

Dont think it will be the classic everyone is hoping for.

Title: Re: The Champions League Final thread
Post by: chrisbruce on May 27, 2009, 09:48:58 AM
Going to be a very tight game this. Man U will happily soak up the pressure and let Barca play carousell and get nowhere.
Man U will hit barca hard on the break and I expect Barca to be very vunerable to any set peice plays, free kicks (Ronaldo Obv) corners etc.

Ive been looking forward to this game for some time now and will have a punt on the following

Man U / Man U   - Half time / full time
Draw / Man U    - Half time / full time

1st Goal 21-30 mins  ( had a dream last night that Man U score in the 29th minute)

Man U win both halves

1st goal - Vidic
1st goal - Ronaldo

I hope the dinner break at DTD coincides with this match otherwise I am going to lose a few blinds

I expect United to win comfortably. I have seen Barcelona play well against a decent side once this year at home against Bayern. The rest of the time against organised sides they look very short of ideas going forward and very vulnerable at the back. Max bet Utd win.

2006 Celtic would have put Man utd out on away goals in a 2 legged tie but they qualified for the knockout stages. There is a bigger margin of error with the league.

Can argue both ways:
EC - Had to be Champions to qualify so it's harder to even get in, one loss away from being knocked out,
CL - Don't have to be Champions therefore all the top teams in Spain, Italy and England are involved so you're more likely to get tougher opposition.

hardly an argument to suggest that the original KO format was as stern a test.
United were beaten in the league home and away by City last season and  Liverpool this season, and 'lost' on aggregate to Arsenal this year. The league format tests ability and durability.
Plus there are still KO stages with the best of the best of Europe to run up against.

This.

Most goalies would have had a very tough time keeping that out. What a goal though...very impressive change of pace.

ManU completely being outplayed now...It's quite shocking how average they look/play tonight.

Hoping for a better second half of them...and a bit more penetration from Barca.

Commentary on Sky is also MUCH better..switched over after I heard this on ITV; "Carrick can pass the ball as well as anyone on the pitch"...Yeah, he's a proper Iniesta or Xavi, so he is.
Then they say "Giggs needs to get on the ball more, as does Anderson" (Essentially they go and list the entire ManU midfield)...followed within 15 seconds (After Giggs finally sees the ball for a second and does Feck all with it) "Giggs is really enjoying that free roll he has now"

Blah! Only watch the half time commentary on ITV as Sky has Souness and I want him to die whenever I listen to him.

Not when they play like this, they can't. (Mind you, they were also piss poor against Bayern)

What a ball in the box but I thought ManU players would have known to keep an eye on Messi...he is after all somewhat known for his ability to score.

The stadium is great, but Rome is a terrible venue for a CL final.  Disgusting that again fans are subjecting to violence (a man u fan was stabbed by an 'Ultra'), and UEFA will do nothing.  How long will they turn a blind eye to the violence of the Italians?  If that had happened in England, they'd be all sorts of repercussions.

I don't think Rooney is as good as made out but for fuck sake he is a lot better than what he showed tonight-Him and Man Utd overall had no fight at all which was so disappointing- I wonder if they would have had anymore had they not won last year???

and Michael Carrick is the most overrated player in English football!!!

Best team by a mile won but as a spectacle I feel pretty underwhelmed!

Pumped.

Man Utd were totally outclassed tonight. You get the feeling they thought they only had to turn up tonight, when the first goal went in they were like wtf this wasn't in the script  :dontask:

The press in Spain have been saying this all season and I think I agree.... Iniesta is the best player on Earth right now.

Carrick is overrated.

The game was won in the middle of the park and Utd need to look there in the summer.

[X] Definitely agree with the game being won in the middle of the park

[X] harsh on Carrick considering he had Anderson and Giggs as company against IMO the two best central midfielders' in world football.

[X] Ferguson completely lost the plot starting Giggs and not starting Berbatov/Scholes

[X] check your pm ;-)

In general I think. Merits a place with a top 4 side - definitely. World class - quite a bit short imo.

At last they lose and i can get some revenge laughs at Jones and Rupinder!!!!

So happy with this, all the Scum fans at Gatwick today were tilting me beyond belief.

And when our plane touched down in Vegas at like 10.30 your time and the captain announced the result, the plane erupted!

BARCELONA ARE THE CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE

I think that Chelsea and Manchester United starting XI's are all world class players' with the exception of Flecther and O'shea for ManYoo - I can see Fergie addressing these positions in the summer.

cliff notes: [X] Rooney definitely world class and it isn't even close. Ask any manager in world football.

gutted we lost but no complaints. Barca are awesome and the best team in the world. Their ball retention was spectacular. Everyone was going on about their dodgy defence- doesn't matter how dodgy the defence is you can't get the ball!

sigh

luckily I'm off for the weekend to spend time in the sunshine drinking beer and listening to music. May manage to avoid all the new Barca fans.

We were outclassed from the moment that Eto'o did Vidic. Surprised at the team because that goal knocked the stuffing out of them in a way that isn't typical United, but then Barca aren't typical opponents.

Worthy champions.

Chuffed to bits about this result last night, it would have been painful to have to listen to David3103 usual drivel about Manure being the best ever to walk the planet.
It will hopefully calm the manc's down for a while now.

I have been saying all season that i thought ManU midfield just wasn't good enough, Scholes and Giggs are finished this last couple of years imo, Carrick is Mr.invisible,Rooney is a very bad left winger(Wtf Fergie?)

I didn't like the formation Fergie went with, he played the exact same against Arsenal in the 2nd leg and imo he was inviting the pressure on, luckily that night young Gibbs fell over and that was Murder She Wrote. So Barca have a very weak defence also , so it obv makes sense to leave about £65 mill worth of strikers on the bench...Hmmm

Oh well GG Barca VWP , it's a victory for football.

Roll on next season......

Agree with all of this but it's easy in hindsight. Before the game I think most Utd fans would have wanted the same set up Vs Arsenal as attacking Barca was playing their game and leaving them space. These tactics have worked so well for Utd in recent seasons - even vs Barca last year.

I think on the night whatever Utd played would have lost. Barca were excellent regardless of Utd being poor.

Although it has more or less the same personnel, the Barca side Utd beat in last year's semi was far inferior to this one. Their pressure off the ball is excellent and their game is far less complicated going forwards.

Interesting to hear Ronaldo's comments about tactics and not discussing his future though. I think he's off. I just hope it's Valencia who replaces him, not Ribery.

Lol most of your posts. Prob what irked me the most was when you hijacked the Sami Hyypia thread and start going on about Eric Cantona.

Yes mate obv hindsight is always 20/20 i appreciate that. It would prob have been suicidal for ManU to go with a more attacking formation, it's just when the Barca defence is so dodgy and they seem at times they would rather concede than just get the ball the F*ck out,  if fergie went for the jugular Barca could have really been creaking. Attack is best form of defence and all that jazz. Also when you're starved of possesion which any team in the world would be against Barca it would be better to have more options up front rather than playing a class winger up front and playing a class striker on the left wing.Surely ManU fans think they are one of v few teams that can stand toe to toe with Barca in attacking options , yet all they were set out to do was stifle Barca.
