I need some techie advice asap, cheers.
Right, ive built a house ajoining another house (which has BT broadband).
Bt have connected a phoneline to the new house but say it is impossible to receive braodband there, although are house ajoing this has BT broadband!
Ive spent hours on the phone and they just say it is impossible to get broadband at this address, although we have it at the address anyway.
So, plan b!
How can i extend the broadband in the main house to work in teh new house?
ie - we have the router in teh main house, so can i wire an extension (cat5?) to a repeater? or another router into the extension.
Any help much appreciated, i dont mind buying whatever is needed as i need teh internets asap :)

You might need to change your router but you can either do this via a wireless or wired router.
I swear by Linksys wireless routers. They're owned by Cisco who are just about the best networking (not social) company around.

If you want this quick just go to PC World, it want cost much more than if you shop around.

So do i need two new ones?
One to replace the BT one  and then a second repeater connected via cat5?

Cat 5e cable will work fine mate.

Run a bit of cable in and stick an RJ45 plug on each end. Plug it in to one of your router ports and in to your pc at the other end.

If your router hasn't got more than one port just get a new one.

Wireless is last resort imo. Wired is much faster, more secure and more reliable.

Option B is to ask them to install a 2nd phone line in to your main house.

Once it's installed just run a phone extension to the new house and plug all the routers etc. in.

Seemple.

I can run cat5 thats no problem and the new house is flood wired, but i need wireless as we have 4 laptops and 3 pcs/macs to go into the new house so i need full wireless coverage.

Might not have been clear before.

It sounds like you're happy having 2 separate lines because that's what you asked BT for.

So scrap the new line going to your extension and ask them to install a 2nd line to the adjoining house with broadband.

When they've installed it get a bit of phone cable and run it from the new socket at the adjoining house across to your extension and stick a phone socket on the end of it.

Take the BT router out of the adjoining house socket and plug it in to the extension socket.

It doesn't matter what BT say it will work.

The reason they say it won't is probably because your extension has it's own address and it's not on their database.

They are also slightly retarded.

If you want a repeater you need a switch instead of a router. It's basically a thick version of a router that splits the signal. Just wire it in cat 5e from a port of your router to the input of the switch. Shouldn't need any configuration apart from the wireless security set up.

How did you get on with the VAT thing? Any joy?

he does pay for it. he owns the office block and paid for the installation of the satellite internet.

as well as his home he beams it to the village school and medical centre foc as they've never been able to afford internet before

If you're going the wireless route then you just need to replace the 1 in the original house.
If you want to run the pc/macs wired then you'll need a adsl router (to replace the bt one in the old house) and a wirelss bridge (for the new house).

Them sat stream lines cost a small fortune.

Laser links ain't cheap either.

I guess he gets his generosity from the other side of the family?
