She was due to go next week anyway in a cabinet reshuffle but chose to go now just as a big **** off to Gordon on the eve of the elections, knowing it would damage their chances. Probably a revenge attack for what he said about her ridic expense claims. Shows instability at the heart of government.

No idea whether Brown will last the full term, we are in untrodden territory. No party has my backing but we DO need stability.

There is no chance of Gordon going before the election.

Anyone who would want to lead Labour knows that no matter what anyone does, they're getting an absolute kicking at the next general election. Best to let Gordon take the rap for that, they'll get shot of him immediately afterwards, then the new person can start with as clean a slate as possible.

While i somewhat share you sentiments, this will never happen. This country will never elect a government that left wing again, political suicide moving too far from the centre.

This might open up a Labour leadership contest to a few lesser known MP's (or past it) to come forward who have nothing to lose. The Torys did it over the past decade albeit in opposition.

Irrespective of this, as one who enjoys politics (a rarity these days), there's something very enjoyable about seeing big political upheaval....there was for example when Thatcher was knifed, when Blair came in etc etc, Obama in the US etc

With Jacqui Smith, possibly Darling on their way too we're clearly in the "death throes" of this government to quote a commentator this morning

No it won't..if Brown goes one it's odds-on that we'll get a Milliband as leader.

That would be good for Labour.

They need to find their David Cameron, and yet he came from absolute nowhere to take over as leader. They do have time, as they will be in opposition for at least two parliaments.

Hazel Blears (the local government minister) quitting just before PMQs on the day before the local elections and now another minister announcing he's quitting as the polls close. Looks like there's an organised movement against him.

Brown wants to move Darling from Chancellor - Darling doesn't want to go and has said he'd rather quit than go somewhere else.

There's a good chance Gordon won't be able to get people to serve in his cabinet at all in this reshuffle, at which point it all falls apart.

He's losing it for sure, no confidence. Even when he brings in this guy:
