Johnson is a good player that needs to be made to feel special, hence he blossomed at Pompey because he was first choice and grew in confidence, he wont do well in a team where he has serious competition for his spot.

Simon Cox has been on-off for a month. Suggestion is that Mowbray is a big admirer, wanted him at WBA, and he'll now go to Celtic

N'Guessan from Lincoln

Loans of Ryan McGivern from Man C, Tom Cleverly from Man U again, Stockdale from Fulham

thoughts of GK Ross Turnbull from Middlesborugh

elsewhere I gather that the Deco/Carvalho to inter stuff is live, but Chelsea want a swap getting Ibrahamovic

Tevez to Man C on megawages

Bentley to Villa

Dnaiel Sturridge to Chelsea

This was posted on the BBC forums about Johnson, albeit the slightly biased Liverpool board, I thought it made some sense...

''Don't knock Johnson. He is just what is needed for the following reasons:

1) UEFA requires us to have a certain number of English lads for the CL, and Johnson is hence perfect.
2) His game is getting better and better and I am sure he will grow into one of the best full-backs in the world within a couple of years.
3) He adds depth to what was previously our most short staffed area of the team.
4) He is a strong attacking full-back who will give us more dynamism in the flanks than Arbeloa.

Yes, I can accept that £17m for a right back seems a lot, especially given our current financial state, but take this as a sign that maybe the bank balance isn't as low as we first thought. Plus, Rafa has for too long had to settle for cheaper, stop-gap players like Josemi and Kromkamp because he wanted to pay a fair price. If it takes £17m to get the quality we need, then so be it.''

There are none, and can't really be any of remote truth until the club is sold. I think it's pretty telling that no one has been banging one the door for any of our players though!!

Touché. I think that the new Real Madrid president might have managed to extend any football downturn for an extra year on top of what it was going to take.

Anyone got a vaild NUS card? Quite fancy getting the deliotte football report again this year but at £600 compared to £60 with a card it's a little too steep!

Especially if we sell Arbeloa to help fund his signing.

Personally, I hope we sell Dossena and Lucas to help fund it.  Babel can go as well imo.

I don't think the cost will be anywhere near £17M.  We're stilled owed for Crouch, and with the wheeling and dealing, it'll probably be nearer £10M.

We should still have a little more to spend apparently.  £25M on Tevez would be good ;)

Not sure that Tevez is a good fit for you. Where would you use him, bearing in mind that if he moves it's for regular first team football?

Also not sure you have another £25M to spend, although who knew that Real had £140M and rising?

You cant get too caught up in the cash side of it though surely. You are owed 7m from Crouch, if you pay 10m and cancel the Crouch money it has still cost the club 17m.

Stadium move must be well and truly on the backburner? The top four must now be operating with full CL money included in their plans. It will be very interesting if someone can break a place or two into those in the next two seasons - obviously its not that likely that they will, sadly. Credit to replace that loss in income doesn't seem to be there given their current loan problems it seems.

As stated on here we're owed 7 mil from Crouch and Dossena and Arbeloa are off making it very little from our budget being laid out if any. Degen will deputise when he gets fit.

Lucas to stay IMO - the young lad from Hansen did good in the second half of the season. Mmm bop. Babel to get one more year I think, mainly because Silva doesn't want to come to us - which is a shame lol.

I think it's pretty widely accepted among Pool fans that we're not on Tevez's list of team to go to as he had a good relationship with Man U fans.

Secondly Kia Joorabchian doesn't want payment over 5 years for Tevez like we've offered.

I think we still have money though. Recent financial reports would have been known to Rafa and the board long before this summer's budget was set. Also, after sales I think the £10-11m outlay for Johnson will be recouped.

Fair one. I think paying £25m in one payment might help his agent/owners persuade him to go though. Also he wont have to move house! In fairness if he stays in England he's going to be hated at Pool, Citeh or Chelsea.

That aside I think he'll stay at Man U anyway, mainly as after Ronaldo's sale it'll be hard to justify not spending the £25 million they want. He'll get the games he wants now too.

We have signed an Exeter player (Matt Gill) and some Swansea reserve (Tudur Jones).

Hell at this rate we might avoid relegation, FML.

OTJ is a good footballer, but has had several bad knee injury's, would easily be playing top half championship football if fit and healthy...

Competition for first team football vs Jose Bosingwa or Philip Degen (as I'm sure we're selling Arbeloa) - I know where I'd go.

The rumour is in the Liverpool store at the ground the option to have "Johnson TBA" on your shirt was available until 9:30pm last night.

All of this means he's off to Chelsea obv.

Bait is a bit strong, he's not that good.

Do you think even if we didn't buy Valencia, Wigan might just keep Nani anyway ?

Man Utd Cant attract world class players?? They make world class players!!

Ok, Ronaldo, Beckham, Van Nistelrooy, Vidic, Evra, Cantona......nah, see what you mean, they're all average.

Surely Real must be interested in Tevez?  Hard grafter with all the skill looks a match to me, guess he likes the Prem though...

Are you for real?? Real can pretty much buy anyone and you think they'd go after Tevez? I dunno what player you've been watching! The guys good but on Real good. They're after signing Ronaldo, Kaka, going for Riberi, offloading Robben, after David Villa and you think Tevez should go there?

Kooo-Kooo back to West Ham i say

True say - none of these were world class before being at Utd. You dont actually buy established world class stars. The exceptions were probably Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney both of whom are English.

llera's signed from franchise fc, hudson's gone to cardiff. strange days at the valley, those transfers have been known about for quite a while but only announced by the club in the last couple of days, all news of anything is being kept under wraps as long as possible as we're apparently going through due diligence on a new takeover bid

Do people think there is ANY chance of John Terry joining Man City.
These stories dont normally run this long without there being some substance, but i find it hard to believe that he would join them at the moment.
Wouldnt surprise me if he had an agreement to join them next summer if they make the Champions League though.

BS imo, Fergie just trying to do 2 things.

1) If he fails to get anyone else, he will say that is happy with the current squad.

2) Sending out a signal to other selling clubs, that Man U won't be held to ransom as they are not desperate to add.

LOL, this was done by an Arsenal fanzine. He is apparently in talks with Man City about an overpriced transfer to them, I sure hope it falls through.

Hopefully we can offload Eboue aswell, there is still talk about him being part of the deal that brings Melo to Arsenal.

If we do manage to offload Adebayor I would love to see us go for Huntelaar but there is big talk of Chamakh from Bordeux.

Alonso wants out. I'm a bit gutted but cant blame the guy after the way he was treated last summer.

Still if we get £30m (or £20m and Negredo) for a guy who Juve and Arsenal wouldn't pay £16m for last summer then we're laughing if we can get Martinez or Camiasso as a replacement.

I dont think this is a bad move. He's now been a proven EPL goalscorer for about 5 years (joint highest scoring Englishman last season?) and went to Pompey for 11 million not so long ago.

Bent being worth 16 million not once but twice would be hilarious.

strange thing for the club to come out with. I'm pretty sure 14m would represent a decent profit, you certainly didn't pay anywhere near 16.5, that was the max figure possible and his lack of appearances would've brought that down plus we gave you a big discount for early payment rather than the installments originally agreed

This would suit us, he has fallen out with the manager and looked half hearted for 18 months. Might suit QPR too. DJ still lives in Hayes, likely to be happier playing locally and might, if he ever managres to stay onside, be good for 10-15 goals a season as he looked on loan at Blackpool last year

A bargain. I expected him to go the premiership.

Really sweet left foot, he will score tons of goals from free kicks if he's given the chance.

I would have loved us to have bought him.

Ignoring everyone arguing architecture with Methuselah (who won't like it unless the bricks were transported by a train pulled by a steam locomotive)..

Danny Fox of Coventry - any good Tighty?

I saw him a fair bit for Walsall, albeit not for coventry.  Excellent left foot, takes lots of free-kicks/set pieces, strikes it 'sweet'.  Good pace/athletic, remembering seeing him sent-off at Port Vale, always looked destined then to play at a higher level.

QPR rumoured to be getting DJ Campbell

This would suit us, he has fallen out with the manager and looked half hearted for 18 months. Might suit QPR too. DJ still lives in Hayes, likely to be happier playing locally and might, if he ever managres to stay onside, be good for 10-15 goals a season as he looked on loan at Blackpool last year
He's a QPR fan I think.

I like him as a player, but heard rumours about his personality and lack of work ethic. Which you seem to confirm. We desperately need a goalscorer.

Damn, I've been rumbled.

He scored a great free kick against last season which must be available online somewhere, although i can't find it.

HOLY SHIT!

Am i the only guy that finds this even more redic that the recent Transfers thats been flying around:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/8155593.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/8155593.stm)

Ibrahimovic is so over rated and isn't even half the player Eto'o is, yet Barca are reported to be offering £35M + ETO'O (worth £25M) for him!

Thats about £60M in total for a lazy bastard like him!

I'm total stunned by this

Looks like they've thrown in Hleb on loan as well (worth another 2-3m).

Why would you change that front 3 at Barca? Pep Guardiola needs shooting.

I think its partly to do with Eto'o getting near the end of his contract and wanting a big payday from a new deal, so Barca have to sell him before his value declines.

Yes but it's not like Barca don't have the money!

I wouldn't pay 40 million Euro for Ibra let alone giving away Eto'o and Hleb as well.

I'm not disagreeing about the Eto'o v Ibrahimovic part. I've yet to be convinced by him - though I've see people on other forums who are more into Italian footie than me who claim he really is that good.

In terms purely of the getting rid of Eto'o side, if he goes to them saying he wants £250k a week and Man City or Inter have agreed to pay it, but Barca "only" reckon he is worth say £140k a week, then with a year of his contract left they really need to punt him.

Imagine Barca did pay him £250k p/w, what happens when Messi's agent turns up at the chairmans door!? Even the biggest clubs have to draw a line somewhere.

Yeah financially it makes sense. I just don't know where you go after a perfect season in footballing terms.

If you cant improve that front 3 by adding Torres, Villa or Ribery then pay the man what he wants IMO. Although I guess with the financial reports surrounding Barca they might have had to get rid if his demands were that daft.

We lose Mascherano as well and we won't be close to challenging for the title this season.  Someone asked who I'd rather lose if I had to chose one.  I went for Alonso, even though last season he was phenomenal for us.  I just think Mascherano is harder to replace and he's key to the stability in defence and the way Rafa wants to attack.  Not happy about losing Alonso though, and not sure who we're going to replace him with.  Even if we sign someone who is of similar quality, will they fit into the side quickly enough?

I was reading something that said Rafa needed Alonso in the side to provide the passes to the Houllier-side he'd inherited.  Now he's building a side that does what he wants, the 40-yard passes from Alonso are less important.  Not so sure about that myself, but if it's the case I'll bow down to Rafa's superior knowledge.

Good post, I agree of the 2 i'd prefer to see Alonso leave and obv i dont blame the lad for wanting to leave, he wasn't exactly treated well and owes us nothing IMO.Such a classy player though lifts his head as soon as he gets the ball and always looking forward none of this passing sidewards and backwards malarchy.I do think it will be easier to find a similar player to alonso if not quite as good, but Mascherano's don't grow on tree's he is such a beast , the bigger the game the bigger the performance from him. So please lets us keep Masch at least ,if not then it's a big big blow to our title challenge.Should be all very interesting anyway....I guess that lad Stevie G could prob do a job somewhere in the middle if neccessary!

Will be a good deal for us imo if we get around 10-12million for him. That said the fact he came out of last season looking like a good player in that defence with that team i would guess he'll go onto to be a very good player

Bassong was our player of the season, though that in itself says nothing. He is as quick as anything out there, which helps him out when he dies make the odd mistake. He's comfortable on the ball too. About 100 times better than Dawson, 75% of a fully fit woodgate, but with time to improve. I think we might have got him for free, so if we make £10m on that it would have to be good business for both.

Benjani was 6/1 earlier to move to Notts County today, down to 2/1 now...  Surely not?!

if he was anywhere but man city it'd be less strange, he's 31 and looking for a big final payday but surely that's what he got when he moved last year. maybe it's another one of those 5 year contracts?

Happy with Kranjcar signing .. also happy that we have kept Bentley for the time being ... really dont think we have seen the best from him yet  (apart from the goal against the @rse obv)

absolutely delighted with the end of the transfer window. turner's £12million transfer means we got a nice sell on fee so didn't have to sell any of our midfield and got to re sign sodje

Quality signing! shouldn't be anywhere near a team with as low a standard as Pompey!

Just like Tuncay, surely a top flight team could do with him?

Stoke did well last season, just a little concerned they seem to have bought in so many players. I think they will be close to being relegated for sure.

With their home form, their physical side and the general shit standard at the bottom of the EPL there is no ay Stoke will go down.
