I am currently sat in a hotel room in Aberdeen .. Travelodge to be precise, I use the word "Hotel" in the loosest sense of the word.

I booked early you know, bout 4 or 5 weeks ago, that way you can take advantage of the cheaper rates... well you could if there was any available !!

Anyway, no worries, I have a "Family room" (En suite with Double bed, pull out bed AND sofa bed) was same price as a normal room, so I figured I would get this one ... plenty of room to move about.

The trip started well, left Pompey in plenty of time for the short trip to Southampton airport, but our goodbye was cut short as no sooner had we stopped at the drop off point and started unloading suitcase/lap top bag from the boot, gestapo pounced and virtually shoved Jane back in the car and shooed her away ... another classic case of "give someone a fluorescent vest and they have an irresistible urge to march on poland!"

Into the airport I trot, bemoaning the fact that i didn't get a hug, only one peck and an "air kiss" as yellow vest was virtually dragging Jane into the car ... Jane probably chuckled all the way home, and not just because she didn't have to kiss and cuddle me ... oh no !  .. What would have her in fits of giggles would be the plane that was waiting for me, twin propeller jobby it was, and looked like it would need someone to kick start the bloody thing.

I am not great with flying, well lets narrow it down a bit, its take off that does for me, once the plane is in the air, I'm OK ... its easy , landing the same, no problem at all .. but FML taking off in any plane just scares the shit out of me, I cant open my eyes, I grip onto the arm rests til my knuckles turn white and i have my head right forward, you know the position... Put your head between your legs and kiss your arse goodbye. Once we are airborne and the dolly's are up and walking about, I am fine ... same with landing, never bothers me... weird.


Sooooo Aberdeen, off the plane and head for baggage reclaim, bag safely in my possession its straight to the WH Smiths in the airport for a packet of smokes, they only sell packs of 10, not a problem ... pay with a tenner and FML ... bad beat number 1 ... she gives me a Jock fiver in my change ! .. WTF am i to do  ?, I have no gloves, I am only wearing a T-Shirt so I cant even stretch the sleeves to cover my hands to prevent me touching it... I stuff said note in my pocket and make mental note to bleach my hands when I get to the hotel .... Ahhh yes, the hotel, that brings me back to the start of this post...

I get a Cab from airport to hotel, pleasant journey, cabbie was an old boy, we chatted lots about football, it was all good .. UNTIL i got to the Hotel ... Receptionist had obviously had a refund from the charm school, she had a face that could sour milk from 30 yards, I'm serious this woman would earn a fortune on Halloween, and that's without spending a penny on make up ...

The convo went a bit like this

 ME "Hi, I have a reservation, name of Shepherd, 3 nights please."

COW "Check in is at 3 O'clock"

ME "Ahhhh No problem, I will go and have a wander about for a couple of hours, can I just leave my bags here until I can check in ?"

COW "NO, we don't take bags"

They fkin took you love, was what I thought, but I refrained from saying it out loud..

ME "OK, I will go for a coffee and a bite to eat and come back at 3pm, if the room isn't ready yet"

COW "Room IS ready"

ME "oh right, so can i check in early then please"

COW "£10"

ME "Sorry ?"

COW "Early check in costs £10"

FML .. Welcome to Aberdeen ... really pisses me off, the staff at the airport, all smiles .... cabbie, top bloke ... Hotel receptionist, evil looking cow with a face that looked like a bulldog chewing a wasp and an attitude that stank worse than a cess pit ! .... And guess which of those people will always spring to mind when I think of Aberdeen in future ?

So, I pay my ten quid and head up to my room ... roomy, not too bad, standard travelodge... they are the same where ever you go ... or are they ?


Family room this is, so by definition that is taken to mean families would stay in this room  which in turn means kiddies would be ok in here ... well not with the fucking radiator hanging off the wall and bare wires around the badly fitted socket they wouldn't !!  See Attached Pics ... I propped the heater against the wall myself, was going to ring down to reception to tell them, then noticed that the room doesn't have a phone ... or a remote for the telly ... or any towels

what it does have though ... is a stunning view ... see last pic.


Oh well, it cant get any worse can it ..... Oh hang on my phones ringing ... FML Its Ironside !!

Beautiful view there Kev - nice little family of air conditioning units. Didn't realise they were wild in Aberdeen.

As for the £10 for early check-in - all Travelodges do this now, I had it at the one in Nottingham for the Sky Poker thing last week.

Aberdeen hotels make a bundle for the guys coming off the oil rigs, who don't care too much about dodgy radiators and crappy views as none of them are paying.

All it's got going for it is it's central. For this reason they get away with murder and still fill up every week.

Just went down to reception to reel off the list ... the response was "thanks for letting us know .. we knew about the door, that happened weeks ago, didnt know about the heater though, will get our maintenance man to look at it on Monday" ... LOL, no mention of a room change or anything !!

Oh well, I shall be emailing on Monday and going for a minimum of full refund. :D

Off out now, meeting Laz and Iron at the Nash ... Tank is coming over later, has to take his Mrs to the cinema first ...sighhhhhhhhh

Good post, Kev. I have every sympathy when it comes to hotel room views. This is what I am currently looking out at from my hotel room - look closely and you can see some air con units on top of the some of the buildings in the foreground. Disgraceful. I would complain to the front desk, but what's the point? They wouldn't do anything about it as they're too busy fetching my laundry, briging me coffee and fruit platters (too much water melon IMO), sorting out my Spa pass etc etc.

FML. Give me Aberdeen any day!

The thing is...it's probably the best view in Aberdeen!

If anyone ever does decide to come to Aberdeen to play poker I can definitely reccomend the City Wharf Apartments, about 3 mins walk from the G Casino, £60 a night Saturday/Sunday (£105 during the week i believe). I've got a lounge and a kitchen so much less soul destroying than a hotel. FYL Kev, see you tomorrow at the G.

I am also staying in the same Travelodge as Kev. I arrived last night after aq delayed Easyjet flight from Luton. The intention was to check in quickly, then head out sharpish to meet up with Kev, Ironside and Lazaroonie down at the International for their £30 freezeout. So I arrive at the reception

"Hi, I'm here for three nights, the name's Raab."

Guy in his thirties, but not too miserable replied

"Nah, got nobody by that name booked in, have you got your reservation slip?"

I haven't got it, so I gank up my lappie and log on to my email, to check my reservation.

I check the dates of the booking. They are OK. I check they have my name right, they do. I check the name of the Hotel...Travelodge Aberdeen West. FML. That's the one out by the airport.

I explain the situation and ask if I can simply transfer the booking. He calls the central reservations call centre and I speak to one of their reps. They check my booking but can't do anything about is as it has been booked through another agency. Its almost 9pm so there's no way the other agency is open now to call and sort it out. I end up paying for another room myself and will call the other agency in the morning to sort it out.

By the time I get to the casino I've almost been blinded away. I arrive during the 300-600 level and have just over 8 big blinds left. I ended up finishing seventh and only played three hands in the entire tournament. One was a double up with pocket eights against a local with K-Q. I flopped trips and turned a boat. The next hand I played was on the final table. Holding A-9 of clubs I moved all in UTG with about 4,000 chips and Kolchester Kiv called me with jacks, the mug. Obviously I rivered a flush on him, much to his disapproval. I was busted not long afterwards when Lazaroonie took me out with pocket fives against my A-K.

I then joined Ironside on the blackjack table, which was much more fun than the hotel shenaningans or the poker.

across the road from the casino is the "Sheriff's court" .... I didnt see any horses tbh, but im hopefull of seeing a posse ;)

Ive had the same problem about 10 times with these muppets, when you book through an agency for whatever reason it doesnt go directly in to the system but the confirmation will be there behind the counter somewhere on an A4 size print.

Back home in Portsmouth after a fantastic but bloody exhausting trip ... I am so knackered, I cant even be arsed to email a complaint to travelodge yet.

Friday ..

After the nightmare that was "The" Hotel room, things rapidly got better.

I headed off to the International casino (known locally as "The Nash") where I was to meet Laz, Iron and Tank and play the £30 freeze out, The plan was to play the comp loosely, get busted, have a few beers and head off to find some more ale and entertainment .. sounded like a good plan but never happened !

The comp got 32 runners and my starting table saw me sat with both Laz AND Iron ... fml.

Tank wasn't playing as he was taking his Mrs to the flicks, I got to meet her later ... Jess was her name, far too good for tank, god knows how he pulled her !!

Anyway ... back to the comp, Iron was playing like a complete novice ... and Laz eventually busted him, to be fair, it was only a matter of "when", not "If"

Jon Raab turned up late and managed to get in to the comp, Iron was already out by the time Jon sat down LOL standard.



Long story short, both Laz, Jon and myself made the final, but with only 4 places to be paid it would obviously be the strongest players that made the money ... The Nash added £40 to the prizepool to make it a total of £1k ... and despite Raab cracking my JJ with his A9, i managed to make the last 4 ... Both Laz and Jon fell short.

We were playing for £400 for 1st then £300, £200, £100 .... I managed to get 3 handed before re shoving AQ into some numpty who had raised K9 and felt he had to call even though passing would have kept him in the chip lead with me just a bit behind ... he binks the 9 and I am out for £200, Oh well, paid the bar bill.... Laz and I had been on a bit of a mission and the drinks had been flowing all night !! ... so to come out of it with a nice bit of profit was a great result :)

1 comp played in the Nash, 1 podium finish ... I think I might just retire now and protect my record ;)

THE INTERNATIONAL "Nash" Casino & Cardroom.

What a place this is ... Those of you that have been to the Fitz in Dublin will have some idea about what this place is like, the atmosphere is great, the customer service is just brilliant, and the staff are fantastic.

John (Legionnaire on blonde) is one of the top suits there, and he welcomed me to the place with a Large JD & Ginger and a tour of the place ... which was nice ;)

Every member of staff I spoke to was smiley and friendly ... jeeeees, if only people realised that happy, friendly staff make customers come back again and again then some places might not be struggling for footfall. The Nash has it spot on.

I have a few photos to post up which were taken last night there ... After we had finished at the "G" , we headed back to the Nash to unwind and have a few beers, and partake of the best buffet I have ever seen a casino put on for its punters TOTALLY FREE OF CHARGE (more on that in the next post)

If you are ever in Aberdeen, make sure you head down Market street and pay the Nash a visit, trust me, you will not be disappointed !!

Iron offered to drive me to the ground so I could take pics yesterday, But it would have meant I missed a couple of beers ... sorry mate :D

I did manage to catch a glimpse of it as the plane took off, though it was through my fingers. me and plane take offs don't get on at all !

Going back to John, he certainly knows the score ... There are 4 casinos in Aberdeen and if you want to keep ahead of the opposition, you have to make an effort.

John showed me a Mahjong room which is away from the casino area, Chinese TV piped in and a little lounge area.. of course they have to walk right past the roulette terminals and black jack tables every time they go to the loo or to the bar ;)


The main thing John and the rest of the guys at the Nash excel at is "Customer Service" ... nothing is too much trouble and he and the team give the impression that they actually care about the place, their jobs and their customers ... an all too rare commodity in the public service industry these days imo.

I had an amazing time in Aberdeen ... Brace yourself everyone, because I will be back (although staying in a different Hotel) LOL

Complaint letter is done ...

I stayed at the Aberdeen Central travelodge on the dates given.

I am not sure where to start to be honest, because merely stating that the room was a disgrace doesn't even begin to fully describe my experience of your hotel.

On arrival I was met by probably the grumpiest, unhelpful and ignorant person I have ever encountered, the fact that she was working in a customer facing role just beggars belief .. I was left waiting for upwards of 20 minutes at reception while she was going backwards and forwards from reception moaning and groaning about not being able to find a key for the bin store or something, never once acknowledging me standing there with 3 bags waiting to check in.. I eventually got lucky, she found the key, did what she needed to do and FINALLY acknowledged my presence.

I was early to check in and was told that I could not check in, or leave any bags there while I went for something to eat and drink and return at 3pm to check in .. I was informed that I could check in early for the price of £10 which I did, and was given the key card for room 308.

The receipt for the early check in confirms the "receptionist" as 112017/SMITHG1

On arrival at my room the first thing that struck me was the state of the windows, seriously I thought we were in a black out zone until I realised that it was in fact just dirt and grime on BOTH sides of the glass ! . That quickly paled into insignificance when i saw the radiator leaning against the wall in front of the exposed bracket where it had fallen from, The radiator was still attached to the socket (which was also falling off the wall) by a white cable with wires clearly exposed.

I thought I would pop into the bathroom to use the facilities after my long journey and prolonged visit to your reception area, I noticed the bathroom door had a large hole kicked into it and to be honest with you, I thought perhaps I had mistakenly walked into a squat by mistake, but no, further checks confirmed that this was indeed room 308 of the Aberdeen Central Travelodge.

I did not unpack, I thought i would just turn the TV on to check the time so I could keep a record of the time of my complaint, a good idea I thought... well it would have been had there been a remote control for the television anywhere in the room !

So, off I trot to reception armed with a list of faults and unsatisfactory conditions, dreading the fact that I had to face the receptionist from hell.. I was somewhat relieved to find that she was not there and had been replaed by a gentleman who at least could look me in the eye and communicate with me properly.

What happened next stunned me into silence, on advising him of the state of my room, he replied "thankyou for telling us, we did not know about the radiator, but the hole in the bathroom door has been there for some weeks now, I dont know why it has not been repaired" .. he issued me with a remote control and after making a list of my complaints, he remarked "I will get these seen to, but our handyman is not in until Monday" . At no time was I offered a room change, or an apology for the state of my room, To say I was shocked is an understatement.

I have photographs of the said problems, I will of course provide these to you, I am sending an exact copy to your press department to, in which i will attach the photographs.

I expect to be compensated for the shoddy and unsatisfactory conditions that I had to endure for 3 nights, and await your response accordingly.

ffs stop moaning ya gr8 big poof,there are people in this world that would of snatched your right arm off to have had the chance to stay where you did.

When BMI cancelled my EMA-Edinburgh Flight, I had to endure an identical FlyBe Aircraft Kev - it's a  Bombadier Dash 8. Propellors, pram wheels for Landing Gear, & very bumpy. So small inside - how did you fit in? - & not an experience I much enjoyed.

But they are quite safe - I gather they don't crash very often. Just the once, as a rule.

Had the automated response to the complaint ... at least I know they have it now.

LOL spent loads on Friday night, would have spent more, but you couldn't keep the pace and staggered off to your hotel room.

Solid complaints kev, I really hope they refund you there mate, you couldnt have picked a worse place to stay :(

tbh the least i would accept is a full refund, although looking at their web site, they give "Evouchers" which you can use for future stays ... I doubt i would be ever using them in Aberdeen LOL

if they do offer you vouchers make sure they're transferrable, then you can flog em on ebay :)up

Kev - count your blessings... when I first came up here I spent ten weeks commuting each Sunday/Friday staying in that there 'hotel' during the week :(

John recommended the Carmelite hotel (http://www.carmelitehotels.com/) to me when I was running Office Poker up there in April - 2 blocks over from the Nash - I had a basic room which did fine for the 4 hours I slept in it. Got a good deal as well.  :)

Just a wee tip for when you return to the Nash  ;)

I apologise that on this occassion our standards have not been maintained and you experienced a disappointing stay at the hotel.
 
We have adressed your concerns with the bedroom including the maintainance issues and the missing items.
 
I have also picked up with the individuals concerned who failed to rectify your issues in a timely manner, this will be dealt with internally.
 
I want to offer you a full refund and would appreciate it if you could call to arrange this, we do not hold customer credit card numbers at site.

Full refund and a promise of a free nights stay at another hotel to prove they are not all shit holes.

Plus you have to emphasize the fact that you are in a new position that requires frequent stays in hotels across the UK.
