Title: Re: London to Edinbugh Post by: tikay on June 22, 2009, 12:46:25 PM This must be like porn for TK, although he obviously doesn't watch Topgear as he hates everybody on it. TK, if you read this...watch this Topgear episode on iplayer...doesn't get much better than this for you (unless Clarkson was replaced by Orpie obv.) Sorry boldie, but nothing on earth could force me to watch children's TV, & lads who drool over cars need to grow up imo, cars are tools, which we use to get around, not toys. "Tornado" too is fake - Steam Locomotives need to be aged to have authenticity. New Steam Locomotives have zero street-cred with Steam buffs. The Vincent intrigues me though - I used to own a "Vincent Shadow". Vincents had the nick "The Rolls-Royce of motorbikes" & well-deserved that title was, too. Many Drag-Bikes were Vincent-powered, as were 60's Racing combos (sidecar racing). In fact I think Sidecar Legend Chris Vincent actually rode a Vincent powered jobbie, & Owen Owen had a Vincent-powred "trike", built to circumvent the regulations. And I'm not entirely sure here, but I think the famous Dunstall-Domiracer may have been based on a Vincent block installed in a Norton Featherbed frame. In the early 60's, even then I was a supporter of the underdog, & I was at Brands one day, where the local hero was Derek Minter, ("The Mint") the self-styled "King of Brands". Paul Downer, on the Dunstall-Domiracer (1,000cc I believe) & Mint were dicing for the lead in the main race of the day. Inches apart down Westfield, Mint's Norton burst an oil line, the oil sprayed over his rear tyre, he came down on his own oil, & Paul Downer piled into the wreckage & was killed outright. Mint was badly injured, but recovered. I never forgave Derek Minter, which was foolish really, as it was just a "racing accident". It's strange how these things, so many years ago, stick in the miind. Title: Re: London to Edinbugh Post by: tikay on June 22, 2009, 01:28:21 PM Appetite well & truly whetted, I just had to go google that Race at Brands, which, it seems, later became known as the best UK short-track race ever. In the same trite way, I suppose, as, in horse-racing, Bustino v Grundy at Ascot in the King George was. (Amazingly, 30 years (?) on, I can still recite, without the aid of google, the breeding of both those two).
Anyway, I found a pic of Downer & Minter in that very race. What memories! In the picture, Dave Downer is ahead, shortly to be overtaken by Derek, & death. Almost unbelievably, that Race was 47 years ago. Note the pudding-bowl helmets. Title: Re: London to Edinbugh Post by: byronkincaid on June 22, 2009, 01:32:42 PM Quote cars are tools, which we use to get around, not toys. i wonder how you justify buying a bmw instead of say a honda civic or a toyota corolla which would be much cheaper, more economical, just as reliable, just as safe in any roll over incidents, cruise just as happily at motorway speeds and probably ride a lot better if your zimmer is on run flat tyres? most people including myself of course would take the zimmer but it's for toy like reasons like sporty handling and prestige surely? levi jeans or armanis? I don't understand why is liking cars = bad liking trains = good ?? Obv. Cars are 2 a penny, anyone can buy them, borrow them, drive them. Trains, & Locomotives, are nothing like so accessible, & only Heroes drive them. The Driver has responsibility for the safety of his Passengers - as many as 1,000 of them per journey. Locos smell nice, too. Title: Re: London to Edinbugh Post by: Claw75 on June 22, 2009, 01:34:09 PM were you in to speedway as a lad Tikay? My late grandfather (died before I was born) was a speedway racer/rider (what's the correct terminology?) - no idea if he was well known or not. I should make an effort to find out more about him.

Lol, no, not at all! Cheapest is not always cheapest. and I don't own the Beemer, I Lease it. "Regards" (who arranges these things for me) may have done a job on me, but I believe, 120,000 miles on, mile for mile, £ for £, it's been the perfect balance of cost, reliabilty, efficiency, fuel economy, & fit-for-purpose-ness. My previous 5 cars were all Mercs, (Company Cars) & the same applies - they were stunningly good value, cheap to run, & utterly, utterly, reliable. I'm a very strong believe in you get what you pay for, & that cheapest is rarely cheapest. When you coming out to play some more Live Poker? I much enjoyed Table-Sharing with you at DTD. And it did you good, put some colour in your cheeks. I used to go & watch Speedway at White City, Hackney, Stamford Bridge, Coventry, Perry Barr, & Ipswich, where, later, I attended the annual World Stock-Car Championship every year. My Stock-Car heroes were Barry Lee (351), Duffy Collard & George Polley (BOOOOOOO!). In those days, ALL Speedway bikes were JAP-powered. And all Speedway riders had their pick of the girls - "Spedway-rider" then was like Rock-star, or Street-Artist (= Tosser), today. I honestly think a good honda does everything you say you want in a car, and they are certainly not the cheapest cars just cheaper than BMW's and Mercs. However if you bought a different ferrari/rolls/bugatti for every day in the week I would applaud you, you have worked hard all your life so why not enjoy yourself. Driving a BMW feels more special than driving a honda, everyone would admit this except you apparently :) Title: Re: London to Edinbugh Post by: tikay on June 22, 2009, 02:04:47 PM Quote And it did you good, put some colour in your cheeks. yeah well pretty much everyone spanked me at poker that week including yourself, folding QQ preflop when I had KK grrrrrr, good that it made me realise that I need to put some more effort in, have been lazy recently levi jeans and armani jeans do the same thing right? except one is twice the price of the other. I happen to know a bloke who flogs Beemers, I don't know a bloke who flogs jap cars. And I do think the Beemer represented the best deal for me. But I suppose I would, eh? I really must do a Diary piece on the Cars I've had down the years. You'd probably be VERY surprised to know that in a list of about 25 cars, the Honda Prelude I had ranks 2nd - by a clear margin from any of the others. Sadly, I, & it, got T-Boned in spectacular circumstances, & that was that. Title: Re: London to Edinbugh Post by: Claw75 on June 22, 2009, 02:30:17 PM were you in to speedway as a lad Tikay? Would have been based in Wimbledon, most probably. Don't know exactly when, but, and I hate to say this, probably before your time! He moved on to cycle speedway later, I believe, and my dad and his brothers (the Lawrence brothers) were all keen participants in that sport too - I was dragged all round the country as a kid for their meetings. One of my uncles has taken it up again lately - he was UK champ for a while back in the 80s, and I think he's doing quite well again now. I really must catch up with everyone. I also feel quite ashamed for not knowing more about my grandfather - I gather he was well known and respected in the local community. He died when my dad was 14 and my dad talks very little of him. But then I've never really asked. Title: Re: London to Edinbugh Post by: Claw75 on June 22, 2009, 02:35:45 PM just did a quick google and looks like both my uncles are back in the swing of it (and doing quite well too!)
