Title: A new chess thread Post by: FuglyBaz on June 25, 2009, 11:17:36 AM Think the other thread ran it's course at end of last year, so time for a new one :)
A couple of days ago I beat International Master Martica Fierro in a Simultaneous Display on ICC, after capitalising on a mistake she made in the Velimirovic Attack variation of the Sicilian Defence. She dropped a pawn then allowed me to paralyse her queen, and eventually I won the game with an exchange sacrifice and a crippling position which was resignable. Heres the moves for the game (I am Black, as the Master always has white), if anybody wants to throw it into a PGN viewer:- 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Bc4 e6 7. Bb3 Nc6 8. Be3 Be7 9. Qe2 Qc7 10. O-O-O O-O 11. Rhg1 Na5 12. g4 Nxb3+ 13. axb3 b5 14. h4 b4 15. Na4 Nxe4 16. g5 e5 17. Nf3 Bd7 18. Nb6 Bb5 19. Qe1 Rac8 20. Nxc8 Rxc8 21. Rd2 Bd3 22. c4 bxc3 23. Rxd3 cxb2+ 24. Kxb2 Qc2+ 25. Ka1 Qxd3 26. Qd1 Qc3+ 27. Kb1 Rb8 28. Qc2 Rxb3+ 29. Kc1 Qa1+ 30. Qb1 Qxb1# 0-1 Anybody still playing? Playchess.com is the mutts nuts for blitz chess if anybody wants to play quicker games! Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: kinboshi on June 25, 2009, 11:33:17 AM Still playing on redhotpawn.com - playing badly at the moment as I have too many games on the go and am moving house so have little time to play.
Najdorf is always a winner ;) Looks like she blundered, but I'll have a look at the game properly later. Excellent result :)up Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: pokerfan on June 25, 2009, 12:38:32 PM According to the local rag there is more people playing online chess than poker. Cant be right can it?
Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: The-Crow on June 25, 2009, 11:43:43 PM I play on chess.com
I like rooks openings Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: thetank on June 26, 2009, 04:42:09 AM I'm still playing.
Not so big a fan of correspondence games, I'm more of a fan of playing the whole thing out in a the one go. Live chess >>>>>>> online chess as far as I'm concerned, but it can be tough to find live games. The chess clubs in Aberdeen seem to have vanished, thinking of starting one up at the Uni next year. Would love to spend more time playing and studying chess but the need to grind online and make bucks is pressing. sigh Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: thetank on June 26, 2009, 04:51:12 AM Playchess.com is the mutts nuts for blitz chess if anybody wants to play quicker games! Probably true. Chess has the under 18s and no legality issues. I may be able to provide clocks, and other equipment, provided you guys promise not to hammer the sheeeeet out of the clocks. Anyone abusing the clock would be insta-disqualified by the arbiter i.e. me. Abusing your opponent is fine, ldo. 12bb (member of the Chess Arbiters' Association) Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: kinboshi on June 26, 2009, 01:51:55 PM Anyone got a chess clock? They will take some battering during a blitz game, but it shouldn't damage the clocks if people aren't stupid. Do you have a couple of clocks and some standard pieces/boards? They'd be most welcome. A few beers would be in order I feel :)up Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: thetank on June 26, 2009, 01:55:39 PM Anyone got a chess clock? Now eat some bran.
Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: 12barblues on June 26, 2009, 02:09:00 PM I may be able to persuade my chess club to lend me as much as we want in exchange for a nominal contribution to club funds.
'Normal' blitz treatment of the clocks is fine. I would be on the hook for any damage beyond normal wear and tear, but we are all sensible, sober characters, aren't we? So no problem there........ I can discuss it at the club next Wednesday if there is sufficient interest. Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: kinboshi on June 26, 2009, 02:11:59 PM If you could do that, it'd be excellent. Looking at who'd be playing, I'd say that there shouldn't be any problems at all. You could always take a deposit of anyone using them, that's returned if everything's OK.
Do we want a list of interested peeps? 1. kinboshi Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: thetank on June 26, 2009, 02:13:25 PM 2. tankboshi
Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: 12barblues on June 26, 2009, 02:35:06 PM I think taking deposits is a bit OTT. If I was seriously worried, I wouldn't have offerred! Can't guarantee that t'committee will agree with me, though.
Is it worth sticking something on the BB board? Or would you prefer to wait until I know I can get the kit? I will be leaving to travel to a little music festival shortly (Chairman of the Board in suit and tie this morning, scruffy bastard camping in a field this afternoon! ) so I'll be off board until Sunday evening/ Monday morning. Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: kinboshi on June 26, 2009, 02:37:59 PM They'll definitely be 8 or more people interested in playing - so even a couple of boards/pieces with clocks would be great. If you can get more, then that's great.
I don't think a deposit is necessary, but thought it might placate the committee if they're worried? Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: 12barblues on June 26, 2009, 03:03:46 PM I can get at least 16 (and probably more - I've never counted them) full sets of kit, so I think we would be more than OK on that front. FML if I've misjudged the likely demand and have to organise anywhere near those kind of numbers of players.
Some questions to consider when we have seen how many people are interested: Friendly games only or some kind of tournament? If a tournament is wanted/viable, what time limits? All-play-all or Swiss tournament? Timing vis a vis other events taking place? I haven't been to a bash so I have no idea how crowded the programme is, with footie, drinking, RSQ, drinking, etc (oh...and some poker and related silliness). Come to think of it, I'm not on the list anyway. Oops! Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: Jon MW on June 26, 2009, 03:09:48 PM ... All-play-all or Swiss tournament? Come to think of it, I'm not on the list anyway. Oops! If it's a tournament then I'd suggest it'd probably have to be Swiss because of the timing. I think it might still be a challenge to fit it in anyway. HU knockout is also obv. a possible structure - especially if nobody can be bothered working out the draw for Swiss Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: kinboshi on June 26, 2009, 03:09:56 PM I was thinking some random games going on, but maybe some sort of tourney on the Sunday - whilst the HU is going on, but obviously not clashing.
Small leagues, then go into a knock-out stage - like the World Cup/Champions League? 5 minutes each on the clock? Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: FuglyBaz on June 30, 2009, 10:47:59 PM I like the idea of either a quick tourney or some friendly games.
Add my name to the list for a tourney/league! Maybe we should have a blonde league for just online play too? I'm gonna be on for a few hours now if anybody wants to give me a bashing on any site they choose!!! Title: Re: A new chess thread Post by: 12barblues on July 02, 2009, 12:24:11 PM Loan of equipment is agreed, in exchange for a contribution to club funds of £10 to £20. I have provisionally asked for 4 sets, but can adjust numbers later if necessary.
