Title: Lebanon
Post by: snoopy1239 on June 26, 2009, 04:03:43 AM
I have been asked to blog a tournament over there? I'm not up to date with current affairs - is it a safe place to go as a UK journalist or should I not go?

I was tlaking to someone involved with tourneys over there.

He said the venue itself is totally safe and they treat foreign guests absolutely amazingly.

However, he couldn't guarantee anything away from the venue obv.

If I was you I would pass, but maybe you are an adventurous beagle and they are paying a kings ransom.

what is the event in Lebanon?

Personally I'd want to know the security arrangements for players and staff. I have a relative who went there 4 or so years ago. Amazing opulence in the "safe" areas contrasted with the exact opposite elsewhere

I think it's this paragraph that's putting me off:

Quote
# There is a high threat from terrorism in Lebanon.  Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers such as hotels and restaurants.

There's also a high threat of terrorism on US flights, according to homeland security. High threat in India, and I'd guess in London too. "High threat" doesn't mean it's 50/50 whether you're going to survive or not. I personally wouldn't not go to a place unless the FCO actually advised against it, and this is nowhere near the same thing. Approach Lebanese ATMs with caution though.

Nice rub-down.

go. they have pounds as their currency but the exchange rate is something like 2500/1 so when the cashpoint is blown up by terrorists you can post on here about how the phone call to your bank cost £10k

A good opportunity to visit a place you'd not normally go.  I'd do it I think.

This

My wee brother is travelling in the middle east later this year just for the fuck of it, doing Syria, Lebanon and Iran is the plan. If I had the dosh and no uni etc, I'd go with.

Mmm, Iran would be interesting at the moment.

Hopefully things will have settled a bit by then.

Personally I don't think the election controversy there will lead to a civil war but I'm not an expert. There will be a much clearer picture in a few months as to whether or not Iran would be a relatively safe destination.

It's a terrible situation there at the moment from what I've heard.  Been following the story on some blogs of people in Iran.  They've had to stay on the move as the authorities have been monitoring internet usage and clamping down on anyone reporting on the situation.  Some have actually been arrested and unfortunately, others have gone missing.

I think he'll be hearing the thwack of latex gloves at US immigration if he goes there with those stamps on his passport.

That thought never occured to me.

Will make mental note, could potentially use this as teasing ammunition at one point.

Whilst I wish your brother a safe trip it does amaze me all the people that go to these places then when something goes wrong the family bleet about how the government isn't doing enough to help them!

You can get a duplicate passport for just this reason.

It gets worse you know.

You see he's planning to get there by airplane. The mad fool, doesn't he know those things are always crashing.
