I'm somewhat resistant to all the hype surrounding the latest bright new prospect. I tend to have them down as arrogant wannabees without really knowing anything about them (mainly jealousy of course).

But I just saw a quick interview of James Akenhead after he hit the chiplead on day 5 (link below) and he seems like a very level-headed and genuine bloke. Obviously very much on the ball too of course, he sure didn't get to where he is by accident. Really hope he makes the N9.

James played so good today, wish I could be hand specific but who knows who might read this so don't want to give any of his hands away. Last nite he couldn't win a hand and had done half his stack and sat and grinded, basically folded the day out for the last level, knowing he couldn't win a pot no matter what he tried. Such a mature performance, certainly something he didn't used to be able to do. Told him this morning he would get his reward for that play with a great day and he did.

When me and Karl got to the Rio (after missing our flights home) he was already up to 6million, he had some young american kid talking to himself (until he put him out his misery) and generally controlled his table beautifully, barely losing a significant pot.

Will be back with the boys to cheer him to november tomorrow, will pass on the good wishes from here, mentioned it earlier and he's really grateful....gogogo sickdog.

James was late turning up and is probably wishing he had overslept by a few more mins. From pokernews:

Maybe James Akenhead would have been better served to show up fifteen minutes late insted of just three minutes late. He opened a pot to 260,000, then called when Ian Tavelli re-raised to 750,000. On a queen-high flop,   , Akenhead checked to Tavelli. Tavelli made it 1.5 million to go and then snap-called when Akenhead moved all in.

Tavelli:  AA

Akenhead found himself coolered less than fifteen minutes into the day. No help on the turn  or river  for him. He had to pay off 4.305 million to Tavelli, leaving himself with just 2.8 million. Tavelli is up to about 10 million.

I don't know James but from a spectators point of view have always been impressed by him. After the cruel hand heads up last year if anyone deserved that famous 'one time' and to bink a king its him.

Don't know the guy but have played with him a few times. All I can say in this day and age when everyone can play a bit, there are few players that really stand out of the crowd that I have played against, he is certainly one of them.

James Akenhead certainly has been delat more than his share of premium hands today. He got all his chips in with pocket queens against Tommy Vedes.

The preflop action started with a raise to 355,000 by Vedes that Akenhead re-raised to 975,000. This was the second time in short succession that Akenhead had re-raised Vedes preflop. That may have factored into Vedes' decision to shove all in, having Akenhead well covered. Akenhead gave only short thought before calling for his last 4.0 million with  . Vedes showed down  .

There was no help for Vedes on a board of     . After paying off Akenhead, Vedes tumbled to 4.5 million. Akenhead is back up to 10.0 million after a rough start to the day.

Thus far, James Akenhead (with a large, rowdy crowd of supporters, including Karl Mahrenholz), Phil Ivey ("Ivey, Ivey Ivey!") and Steven Begleiter ("Begs! Begs! Begs!) and Joe Cada ("YOU ARE A ROCKSTAR! SOUL CRUSHER!") have received the strongest ovations.

James got the best ovation by far....then the singing began lol. Awesome awesome performance, so chuffed for him. We're off to celebrate for 36 hours before trying to make our next flight, friday. Will get James to post when he's read all the good luck messages etc....vegas better prepare for 20 very happy brits tonight, and hopefully 200 in november!!
