Matchroom Sport and Tom Dwan announce “Durrrr Million Dollar Challenge”

Matchroom Sport, the World’s leading producers and distributers of televised poker, are delighted to announce the launch of the “Durrrr Million Dollar Challenge” in London this September.

Tom “Durrrr” Dwan has become a phenomenon in the last 12 months and is now widely regarded as the most feared cash game player in the World.

The challenge will see Dwan take on four opponents over 500 hands each in a live heads up match up. Each player will buy into the challenge for $500,000 and the blinds will be set at $500/$1000 with each opponent being offered the preference of Pot-limit Omaha or No-Limit Hold’em. No player can leave the contest until either the 500 hands are up or the player has bust.

Eddie Hearn, Managing Director of Matchroom Sport commented “We have been lucky enough over the Years to promote the biggest names in many sports and Tom is without doubt the biggest draw in poker right now. He is totally fearless and ready to take on any player that is willing to face-off in the Million Dollar match up. This will be the most hotly anticipated match up in modern day poker.”

Dwan, who has estimated on-line winnings in excess of $10 million, is excited by the challenge. “I am looking forward to sitting down and playing some of the World’s best players live in London . There looks to be lots of interest in people wanting to play me but they never seem to appear on-line. It will be interesting to see the response Eddie gets and just who is willing to get it on.”

Details of the opponents facing off in the Durrrr Million Dollar Challenge will be released over the coming weeks.

Why would anyone take him on at even money? He is the "most feared cash game player in the world" after all.

Offer 2-1 and they will be queuing around the block imo.

Sammy "any two" first to accept Durrrr Challenge

Sammy “any two” George is the first person to accept the Durrrr Million Dollar Challenge, signing up to take on Tom “Durrrr” Dwan in a million dollar match-up in September.

Matchroom Sport announced the challenge in July and the Londoner made it clear that he wanted to take a shot at Dwan, who is widely regarded as the most feared cash game player in the world. George has become a familiar face in televised poker after appearing on a string of TV tournaments including a 24 hour session in The Big Game and Poker Million, where he made the semi-final. The epic confrontation will see two of the games boldest competitors lock horns.

“I’m buzzing – what could be sweeter than playing in the world’s biggest heads-up match against Durrrr?” said Sammy. “I’m stepping up to the plate and putting my money where my mouth is and it will be an honour to represent my country against the best the US has to offer.”

“My message to Tom is – paper cannot wrap up a fire,” warned Sammy, who raised the stakes in a recent interview, stating: “With Phil Ivey and Patrick Antonius, you are talking about guys I rate quite highly. Guys like Durrrr to me are normal, you know, they’re nothing special.”

The challenge will see Dwan take on George over 500 hands in a live heads up match up. Each player will buy into the challenge for $500,000 and the blinds will be set at $500/$1000. No player can leave the contest until either the 500 hands are up or the player has bust.

Eddie Hearn, Managing Director of Matchroom Sport said: “I am delighted to welcome Sammy to the Durrrr Million Dollar Challenge. Sammy is one of the few players in the game who is willing to walk the walk rather than just talk the talk and although many will see him as underdog in this match, he has plenty of heart and should not be underestimated.”

It's been really interesting to see the responses about Sammy's involvement.

I met up with him yesterday and anyone who knows him will tell you he has a heart of gold so it's a little tough to see him slagged off for taking it on. I think for him this is really about the buzz of the occasion. There have been so many people who have stated they would be willing to play Durrrr but when it come to putting their half a mill on the line, it's a different story. From day one Sammy has stated he would LOVE to play Tom, and like he says he has put his money where his mouth is.

To be honest, in some respects I actually find this match up perhaps more fascinating than him playing a more accomplished player. Sammy doesn't think he is one of the best players in the World and he doesn't think he is a favourite but he also doesn't think he is as much of an underdog as the poker community. I almost liken the Durrrr Challenge to a pay per view boxing match. There is a saying in boxing that 'styles make fights' and in that respect this promises to be a classic.

I also think it's a tribute to Tom how hard it is to match him in this Challenge. I find it fascinating to read the Camels post of "why would anyone play him for even money". Is he really that far above the rim? If so then when was the last time in poker that the proclaimed "best players in the World" shirked a challenge of this sort. And why should he offer odds? It's a cash game, man on man. If you are looking for extra value then a players' sponsor will certainly be willing to make a contribution to such a high profile event and in addition if you beat Durrrr what are you worth then????

Whoever else steps up to the plate we will see but its been so interesting offering out this challenge. You can certainly see what people are made of.... in many respects.

I am looking for staking so I can step up to the plate. I am selling 1% chunks for £5k in return for 50% of the profits. If this happens I would find it very easy to step up to the plate. If this was Sammy's only money it would be stepping up to the plate. This is more like one of those rich oil-tycoons who get Mariah Carey to sing at their daughter's birthday party. An expensive world class experience that ends quickly. gl to him thou.

I know of the guy and in fact have played against Sammy and, whilst not a big fan of his style of play, I congratulate him for putting his money where his mouth is. I am pretty sure he hasn`t made his money from playing poker but he has brought money into the game so again good on him.
A year or so ago I would have ranted on as to how little chance he would have and that this is just another matchroom publicity stunt but now with a, lets say, " broader" view of the goings on in the world of poker my comments would be "he`s putting his money up and taking his chance , for sure he loves the limelight but he`s paying for that privilege so let him take his shot".
Do you really think that Durr is so much better than him? or anyone over 500 hands? I think not, over 5000 yes but 500 would still give Sammy a fighting chance and more importantly, if the money is not a factor?  then David may again defeat Goliath....don`t you just love what the TV/media have done to our beloved game, it`s not poker as I know it but it is poker for the masses, it`s now  "entertainment" and the more money you have the more opportunities you will have to entertain.

If the deck hits him in the face course he has a chance.

However he's probably got a better chance putting the million on red then playing Dwan.

The last time I watched Sammy play was $25/50 on TV - the pokerden cash game I think. I'm pretty sure he was up something like $70,000 and then proceeded to spew like no man has ever spewed before on telly to drop like 2500-3000bbs from peak and be the biggest loser in the game.

He seems like new money who wants everyone to know about him but fair play to the guy, he's made a lot of money in business and if he can afford to lose half a mil in a day (not saying he will) then good luck to him. I'll look forward to watching it.

Did they forget to mention the $7m he'd lost?
