Title: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: thetank on December 04, 2005, 08:51:31 PM That sailing round the world lady, Ellen MacArthur, just beat Jimmy Carr's lap time in the 'star in a reasonably priced car' section of Top Gear. That record had stood for a fair old while before today.
Something about that woman scares me, she can do anything. I think if she chose to, she could be Queen of the Universe and use her power for evil so someone should keep an eye. Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: RED-DOG on December 04, 2005, 08:55:46 PM Wuf
Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: TightEnd on December 04, 2005, 11:11:40 PM She's bloody fantastic, the book was awe inspiring and I followed her progress in the last round the world attempt, which she achieved, daily on her website
Astounding courage. Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: thetank on December 04, 2005, 11:21:04 PM When you can only sleep for 20 minutes sleep at a time because if you sleep longer you'll die. That's bloody amazing indeed. You can see raw determination in her eyes, I've never seen that before, so clearly, in anyone.
I think I'll push someone off my fantasy dinner party guests from tightend's 'If you could...' thread and add her. Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: TightEnd on December 04, 2005, 11:24:48 PM She's about 8 stone wet through and about 5 ft 2 tops
Her biggest mast nearly collapses in the middle of a South Atlantic gale and she climbs up the pole with a tool kit and a sou'wester on, rips her leg open, fixes it, comes down, grabs 20 minutes kip, sutures herself, takes some injections, self administered and carries on Unbelievable stuff Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: thetank on December 04, 2005, 11:32:52 PM I truly believe she could accomplish absolutely anything. Hope she doesn't take up poker, no other bugger'll stand a chance.
Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: Graham C on December 04, 2005, 11:54:46 PM she's pretty good, seems to be on a lot of tv atm too. May have to get her book.
Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: jezza777 on December 05, 2005, 12:54:58 AM I saw this - Astounding person - Clarckson couldnt have been more spot on when he said that it is people like her that drive the human race forward. Good stuff.
Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: mex on December 05, 2005, 02:34:30 AM Doesn't her snivelling get on your tits though? It would also be nice for the guy that designed and built the highley advanced and equiped B&Q yacht some credit. I mean it came flat pack had 5 different sizes of allen key bolts to do had a mast missing and the instructions were from a pedlo they had in clearance
Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: ifm on December 05, 2005, 02:37:50 AM I watched an older one earlier with Trevor Eve (actor).
He ended up about 4th on the board but on another lap he had the wheel collapse on him, they said that he would easily have beaten Jimmy Carrs lap time and even said that he was by far the best driver they had had on the prog. Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: thetank on December 05, 2005, 04:25:19 AM Is that the Top Gear equivalent of a bad beat story?
We'd all be world champs at poker if it wasn't for our wheels coming off at the wrong time. MacArthur is champ, results are the only thing that count. Does having car in you name make you a better top gear driver? Jimmy Carr Ellen MacArthur oh and how about Trevor Eve (Note to self - Stop posting s***e and play some bloomin' poker already) Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: Nem on December 05, 2005, 09:41:12 AM Is that the Top Gear equivalent of a bad beat story? I get the impression that a good man could make her whole. I am now absent without leave pending non-men seeing this. "New man" concept not reached Harlow then yet? I am now absent without leave pending non-men seeing this. "New man" concept not reached Harlow then yet? It's like she missed the night at Uni when a man made her all warm and fuzzy inside. So now, in a desperate attempt to find completion in her life, she goes out alone in boats. Can't wait for the ladieees to respond to this one! I'm saying this a bit tongue in cheek but there must be something missing in her life to want to do that? ps I'm about half half new man. I change nappies and cook but also believe in mums being mums and not sticking the kids in childcare and having a "career". Wow I'm dead on this forum now arnt I?! Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: TightEnd on December 05, 2005, 10:42:24 AM I'm ducking
you go into the Andersen shelter, I'll knock three times when it's safe. Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: yt on December 05, 2005, 10:49:26 AM I know, it's dangerous to have an opinion sometimes but better to have one than to not.
Luckily my missus agrees with me on the childcare thing and I know what she says goes. and back to ellen - hats off to the girl for winning the tog gear thing - do you think the fact that she weighs 5 stone less than the men had anything to do with her time? Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: Heid on December 05, 2005, 10:54:35 AM Can't comment on the mum being a mum thing - don't think about stuff like that. I don't know what's wrong with a gal going out and pushing herself?
She's got plenty of time to do all the girly stuff. Perhaps she didn't find a good enough man for her at Uni? Perhaps some bloke told her she wouldn't ever be good enough to do something like that, and that's why she has become so driven? I do think the days when a woman feels "complete" when she has a man and a kid are long gone - thank goodness, not saying it's not nice, and some women will be happy with that - and good luck to them. Would you be saying this about a man who was driven to go around the world in a teensy boat? I certainly think her selection pool will have increased now, suitable man wise. Interesting stuff.. Heid xx Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: yt on December 05, 2005, 11:09:40 AM Would you be saying this about a man who was driven to go around the world in a teensy boat? I'd think he was a bit sad and lonely as well. 6 months of the year, alone on a boat. I don't get it. Fair point, but that's not exactly what you were saying about the girlie though :) Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: TightEnd on December 05, 2005, 11:18:57 AM Would you be saying this about a man who was driven to go around the world in a teensy boat? In this case, combine with with someone who's happier on the sea than on the land and you have something extraordinary Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: divaflava on December 06, 2005, 08:09:50 PM Ellen used to have a long-term bloke according to her manager, the relationship is never publicised - I don't know whether they are still an item as this was a couple of years ago. I can tell you tho that her eyes are mesmerising when you meet her and she is the nicest and most fascinating person I've ever had the good fortune to interview.
Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: action man on December 06, 2005, 09:19:26 PM i dont see the big fuss about ellen, if she wants to sail round the world good luck to her! if i wanted to stay at home and play poker all year then good luck to me. It seems as though everyone thinks shes some kind of superstar. and i dont think she deserves to be a dame.
Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: thetank on December 06, 2005, 10:12:29 PM Is your name an irony thing action man?
Title: Re: O/T Top gear, Ellen MacArthur Post by: M POWER on December 06, 2005, 10:28:01 PM I think she deserves her award she's a good woman for the U.K to have as an Ambassador.
She's clever brave and positive. Willing to have a go not only to take part. But to be a winner. I bet if she ever becomes lazy she'll make a great poker player. Regards M |
