I have had a very big bet on this. But I haven't seen it priced up with any bookmakers.

Just interested in other people's opinions as to how many goals Owen will score this season in the Premiership.

You have had a big bet, or are looking for the market somewhere?

If I had to guess 13-15

I've had a big bet with another gambler. But I haven't seen any bookmakers offering odds.

Gotcha, is it injury/a certain amount of games played dependant?

I wonder how many games he will actually start, or whether they will use him more as a impact sub for short spells to keep him constantly fresh.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was top goal scorer in prem If he can stay fit. i was shocked when Man utd signed him as he could be a liability ,in for 2 games and out for 3 months, but i respect Ferguson's opinion far to much to think this wont turn out to be a good buy .anybody who plays up front for united is going to score goals,a fit Owen ,playing regular,14-20,  in and out Owen , at least 10

If he starts well and stays injury free then I can see him getting 20+ however if he as a poor start he may find himself spending his time on the bench, coming on in the last 10 minutes if that was the case then I would say under 10

Utd still have Berbatov and Rooney and Owen has no guarantee of starting or featuring a great deal.

Add to that his injury problems and the fact he's ridiculously overrated and I don't think Utd will be the attacking force they were the last few years with Ronaldo, I can see him not reaching double figures.

i cant see it will be as low as 9, didnt he score 8 last year in a bad team also out with injury, now playing for a team who will create a lot of chances for him.

When Owen was linked with Celtic this summer, i couldn't believe some celtic fans were unhappy with the link!!!

I think he easily scores more than 9 in the Prem, I was thinking about 15, he could be in a lot of high scoring matches and I think he will have an Ole Gunnar role at Man Utd.

I think a fit Owen will comfortably score 12 or more goals over the course of a league season in that team, Probably more... His strength is still to get on to cheeky slide passes through defenders, and United have plenty of players capable of getting him a shit load of chances.

People say he has lost it.

But remember at Newcastle he got no service from the midfield, we havn't had a true creative midfielder since Beardsley, someone who can play the ball through to the strikers.
This is what made Alan Shearer so great, he scored so many goals when most of the game he had his back to goal.

Check out Michael Owens goal scoring ratio, it's not as bad as people think, he scored like 18 goals in 30 games (guess off the top of my head but its close)

I also think there is a very good chance Utd buy another stiker before the season begins. Villa keeps on getting linked. If comes, Owen will be lucky to play 12 games, let alone score 12!

The reason I think he'll only get 9 is because of injury.  Might be very wrong though, and he might get into the 20s.  Hope not!

i will be very surprised if he doesn't get 9 goals for ManU. Noone could score goals in that Newcastle side last season. even if he only plays half the matches he'll probably get 10+ goals. Manu don't tend to sit back and relax when trouncing shitty sides so he could very well get 2 or 3 in the occasional game

12 is pretty close to what he'll get MIO..could easily go either way me thinks.

Certainly seems the most interesting bet of the season, I don't think many people doubt his ability to bag goals, its his ability to stay on the pitch that is the problem. By the end of the season he will either be retired or everyone will be patting Fergie on the back and calling him a genius.

Man Utd have always had a dedicated penalty taker, so much so that, when in talks to join, Alan Shearer wanted it put in his contract that he'd take the penalities if he was playing, to which Fergie simply said 'Cantona is our penalty taker'.

Owen has lost his pace and will need good delivery to get in behind defences, his turn of foot will not bring the rewards of yester year.
Man Utd seem to have changed the set up this pre season and I expect to see them play quite narrow this year, relying on the full backs to generate width it seems more to create space rather then use it - if Valencia settles quickly this might change.
Without a good start Owen will not start to many Prem games - add into that injury and form of Rooney/Berb and the Italian kid he will struggle for starts.
He has never scored 20 league goals in a season when he has played lots of games, playing fewer he will struggle IMO.

Ferguson has only signed him to piss off all scousers and to punish him for being a thorn in his side for years.  he will then proceed to hardly play him (except for Carling Cup games).  He will be there for one season then retire.  I predict less than 12 goals in total this season with 8 or less of those coming in the prem.

I'd be on over 12 by a nose. It looks pretty marginal by last season's goals per games ratio which is by far the best indicator.

He has to stay fit obviously. Huge if admittedly. For me this is where the entire bet lies.

The reason? We know with near certainty Villa will not come to Man Utd and I cannot see another stiker of that ilk arriving before September. So what does that leave? Berbatov, who in fairness is due a better season, Rooney, who again will undoubtedly improve and score more than 12 (imho this could be his coming of age season) but what else is there?

Don't be fooled by the press. Fergie likes to rotate as much as anyone, except his back four. In 2006-07 and 2007-08 he made 118 and 119 team changes per season winning the league both times. Which means whether a recognised 4th striker comes in or not, if Owen is fit he will be playing a fair number of games regardless.

I don't think you can go from being a goal per two games ratio striker for pretty much your whole life, to one in three, or one in four overnight. Even through his injuries he's maintained this ratio more or less.

The ONLY question here for me is his fitness which is anybody's guess. Personally I think he's due a good run in the team.

If he's fit he scores 12-17 imo.

I'm talking some drivel there.

He's played 56 out of 76 league games from the last two seasons and only scored 19, so an average of 28 games per season and just 9.5 goals.

If he plays 28 this season I think I'd still have him for 12-14 goals in that side.

I think the chances of him playing 28 Premiership games are very close to 0%.

it is going to be very interesting to see what plans Ferguson has for Owen, he is also someone he can play in Champions league then leave on the bench for the prem which would also cut league appearances down.

I was very drunk when I had the bet, it's two and half times bigger than any bet I've had before.

that was the season before last when he did actual score goals and take chances. His finishing last year was awful, combine it with a lack of service and you get 9 goals. The extra chances he'll get at man u are countered by not being an automatic start. Has owen ever had a full injury free campaign? I'd take some games out for that.

All in I'm goin for 13.5 PL goals. If they sign Villa I'd go 10.5.

Rooney left, where he excelled last season, right, now that Ronaldo has gone, or in the hole where he is best now that Scholes is clearly done. If anyone starts hardly any up top it's Rooney. Berba and Owen to start quite a few together up front imo.

Rooney only scored 12 last year and Berba was woeful. Owen will play if he's fit, of this I have no doubt.

Owen will be in double figures by Christmas .... god knows how many of those will be in the league though.

There really aren't many people that own horses that get rich off them. Michael had 5 winners in 2009. Less than a 5% strike rate and only 30k in prize money. His stables are a state of the art facility but grossly mismanaged. He only had 33 individual runners in 2009, so he doesn't have that many horses in his stable.

I heard someone compare Owen's stable to the Coolmore operation a while ago...Coolmore he ain't. He doesn't buy the right horses, didn't employ the right trainer (though Nicky Vaughan is very good as a second man he just didn't cut the mustard) and mainly flogged his woe-ful horses to footballers.

I am sure Michael Owen is a nice guy, and very interested in horses..but to his stable he is what Mike Ashley was to Newcastle.

I like your side of the bet Keith, Owen is nowhere near the force he once was, has just drifted through his late 20s when his pace went, much like fowler did. some players can cope when their legs go, like shearer did, but he did more leading the line, winning headers, putting himself about, and taking penalties, owen can do none of them and has looked lost the last two years at newcastle. obviously the newcastle side is shite, but he has no chance of getting in the man u side unless there's injuries....and fergie will sign someone either in this tranfer window or the january one, and he is also really keen on the italian kid, who he will get more involved. add in the fact he is the one most likely to pick up the injury, that he has never particularly impressed coming off the bench and that if united have a great season it's unlikely he will have anything to do with it, if they don't he's likely to get overtaken by new signings, then i reckon he'll be lucky to get 7 league goals and 15 league starts....

Or just not getting picked.

I prefer Camel's side a bit more a month later, it is now clear Owen is a squad player. Also neither Rooney or Berbatov have got injured as well as Owen being slightly behind pace to make the line.

No opinion change here. He was never going to play until the CL started. If he has less than half after the Xmas period I think Camel will win but we'll know nothing until the Saturday games after Weds night CL away days.

I took 11. Think it was worth about 15, but the key part of the season is coming up with loads of games in a short space of time and Utd starting to play a little better. One hattrick would tip the balance towards him being fav.
