Title: Enough is enough
Post by: Royal Flush on August 13, 2009, 05:18:25 PM
I get tez internet speeds at the moment, 0.5Meg, this is through BT and i don't live in a virgin area, is there anyone i can switch too to get a faster connection?

The Line is the limiting factor i am assuming?

depends on how far you are from your local exchange

You will get full speed upto 1 km away

Half speed up to 2 km away

degrades rapidly after that

anymore than 5 km and you can forget it

You must fucking live in The Democratic Republic of Congo to get those speeds?

I think Flushy lives at the top of a hill - the internet struggles to get up to his house.

However, his upload speeds are amazing.

I can get similar poor speeds in the evening.  Having used the link above, I'm about 2.5km from the exchange.  Apart from moving, is there no other option to get quicker broadband ?

Post by: Claw75 on August 13, 2009, 09:05:20 PM
similar story here, get crappy quality on my landline too, which I presume is also due to distance from the exchange.

Title: Re: Enough is enough
Post by: Longines on August 13, 2009, 09:16:29 PM
Poor speed in the evening could be caused by a number of things:

a) your internal phone wiring is crap. Find the master socket and unscrew the front. Behind it you'll find something called the test socket. Plug your router in there. If your access speeds up via that, you have crap wiring.

b) you're with an ISP who throttle stuff in the evenings. Some claim to do it only to the top x% of heavy users, some claim they don't do it all.

c) You share your bit of the exchange with the world champion p0rn downloaders. Changing to an LLU provider who has their own kit in your exchange will probably help.

d) Between you and the exchange is something producing huge amounts of electrical interference in the evenings. Dodgy minicab offices are a good one.

e) You live miles from the exchange and, err, tough. This one is me.

Connect your router to the test socket first. If there's not much change then the iPlate will do nothing.

FMattenuation.

you need to go into the router home page and have a look at some of the stats - line attenuation, noise, uncancelled echo, excessive impulse noise etc also the rate cap will tell you what BT have your rate maxed at.

If you do connect to the main input socket by removing the face plate, you wont get an immediate improvement, it can take BT up to 4 days to resync your line speed

True. If you have crap wiring then you would see an improvement in the Signal Noise Margin stat in the router diagnostics but not neccesarily an immediate improvement in line speed.

I get exactly the same Flushy, seems it is tough shit until BT upgrade their exchanges.

b) you're with an ISP who throttle stuff in the evenings. Some claim to do it only to the top x% of heavy users, some claim they don't do it all.

Now how funny you say this.

I called SKY when my speed had dropped to aboit 0.1MB a couple of weeks back (I'd tested it because even by my normal utter pishy standards it was slooooow), and they had me do all the usual stuff, and eventually blamed the distance from the exchange, and the fact I am not using the main telephone socket in the house, as to why my respone times were poor.

Yet since I got off the line to them, it has been back to my normal shotty 0.5MB speeds again  ;carlocitrone;

I'm in the same spot as Flushy, 0.5GB broadband only via ADSL. No Virgin. 1.3 miles from exchange.

What's the difference with an LLU operator? I only have Orange, Tiscali and Talk Talk listed as available in my area.

I'm 1.6km from the exchange - as the crow flies - but more like 3.5km as the cables run.

Weird. A mate was staying at his Mum's and her normally rock solid Virgin ADSL line wouldn't stay connected for more than ten minutes at a time. He bought a new router, badgered Virgin etc. etc.

Turns out a filter on an extension socket upstairs had died. Guess the moral is to keep a spare or two handy.

These screenshots and tests everyone is doing, are these on laptops (connected via wireless) or on desktops?

My speeds are pretty bad, and I was wandering how much of this is because of the fact I'm on a laptop?

Title: Re: Enough is enough
Post by: Longines on October 21, 2009, 11:54:51 PM
Usually it has little effect.

Most current wireless kit works at 54Mb/s whilst my ADSL is 2Mb/s. If your wifi signal is poor it will step down to 24Mb/s, 11Mb/s, 6Mb/s etc. etc.

Do a speed test over wifi and one conencted to your router via a network cable to compare.

It looks like Kev's wifi card in his laptop and/or his router is only working at 11Mb/s when they're getting 20Mb/s from Virgin cable.

Installing the latest drivers for the wifi card in your laptop should do the trick. I'd be surprised if it was old enough to only support 11Mb/s.

Nice bump, because I have an update.

Turned out, I wasn't getting what I was paying for! Got the speed upgraded from Virgin Media, and had an engineer come out to change modems, check wiring and have a cup of tea. After he left, my speed is much quicker! Woo-hoo!!!!! Getting the 10MB download speed I should be now :)
