Post by: AgentChip109 on September 05, 2009, 11:04:19 PM

anyone seen this?? thought it was absolutely amazing. kinda found it bit wierd and disturbing at first, but then it becomes epic. thought the lead character was unbelievable, and apparently he has never acted before

Started off ok. I liked that the main character didn't look too Hollywood, and the mockumentary style of an extrordinary situation rather than extrodinary events. Obviously analogous to apartheid, and perhaps the war on terror too, it was shaping up to be interesting.

But then at some point halfway through they decided to shift it into a naff, cheesy and predictable action movie. Ruins it imo.

Anyone seen "Alive in Joburg? Looks like similar idea short film made a few years earlier by the same guy and even the lead actor from D9 was in it and produced it:

IMDB quote:

"I saw this film online tonight and had no idea what it was. However, I was was quite impressed by this short movie due not only to its excellent use of a small budget (making it look pretty professional and expensive) but by the amazing plot. In this parallel world, there was no Black Aparteid in South Africa. Instead, aliens came to Earth looking for a home and the Aparteid system was created just for them. And also on this strange "bizarro" world, Blacks and Whites have much common ground, as they agree that the aliens are no good, lazy, smelly and worthless--just like the propaganda that was spouted for so long to excuse Apartheid in the REAL South Africa until only the last couple decades. The juxtaposition was great--especially when the viewers no doubt find themselves feeling terrible pity for these alien creatures--like more of us SHOULD have been feeling about Apartheid. "

Its brilliant, and those who rubbished it on the movie thread should maybe watch the whole thing...the last half hour is non stop action for those who did'nt like the docu style beginning...

Sounds a little like the premise behind Alien Nation. Good film that, not so keen on the TV spinoff.

District 9 is basically a revised longer version of Alive in Joburg.

District 9 was the nuts, and its not normally the genre of film that does it for me ... thoroughly enjoyed it.

i thought was really good, took a while for it to get going but got me hooked after a certain point. the first time i watched it the version cut out just after he'd been captured.

only bad thing about the movie for me was the ending
