Title: Golf Clubs Post by: rossfourfive on September 17, 2009, 05:43:53 PM I've been playing a fair bit of golf recently but using my dad's ancient blade irons so wanting to get a new set. Would like to spend £300 or less ideally getting 4-SW with a 3 hybrid.
Any golfers want to suggest a good set to go for? Been looking at Nike Ignites which i'm quite impressed with but you have to buy the SW separate. I'm not great and consistently shoot over 100, well over 100. Best manufacturer there is IMO. Title: Re: Golf Clubs Post by: outragous76 on September 17, 2009, 06:20:00 PM Taylor made RACs. You might need a tad more on the budget, but worth every penny.

If your shooting 100+ no point splashing out a fortune on clubs, any set of oversize irons would be fine, you,ll find a set in jjb for £100 to £200 no problem or even a 2nd hand set, from your nearest range or club would do. i see loads of guys at my club with there shiny new callaways or w/e, at the cost of £600,then watch them duff 1,30 yards up the fairway. If you conitnue to play and lower your handicap then look to spend a bit more on clubs. Title: Re: Golf Clubs Post by: Girgy85 on September 17, 2009, 07:44:37 PM Taylor made RACs. They are just a quality club for the average player. Spend £70 - and you will get £70 worth of clubs! I was playing with a scratch handicpper a few weeks ago - he was telling me how the golf balls dont matter. Orly I said.... - what do you use ................ "Pro V's" You dont need to spend a fortune - but i would buy a quality set. FInd a good golf club pro who isnt vested into a certain brand. Get the right clubs for you. If you are very tall - get extra long clubs. MAke sure you DONT buy blades - something with a nice big sweet spot will be better! And make sure they let you take em out back for some practice swings. And be driven by 'feel' and not results in the nets!!!!! GL Title: Re: Golf Clubs Post by: ScottMGee on September 17, 2009, 08:27:59 PM Buy a cheaper set and spend the difference on lessons.

Eye 2's are my preference but you may prefer something more modern, I believe that Eye 5's are very much a-la-mode. Title: Re: Golf Clubs Post by: ACE2M on September 18, 2009, 12:37:20 PM GET LESSONS
i taught myself over 5 years and got to 13 but just couldn't get any better. Went and had lessons and swing totally changed, grip, stance, everything, 6 months of awful play until it started to get better. It clicked fully about 2 months ago and i am knocking shots off all the time, last round i played i went round in 6 over on a course where my best ever before was 15 over. I still play with 5 year old callaways but i'm investing in some mizuno's now i feel it's worth it and i always recommend callaways for woods, they just go further for some reason. Title: Re: Golf Clubs Post by: moonandback on September 26, 2009, 05:25:57 PM Everyone saying get lessons is right upto a point, are you going to practise regularly? ive seen people turn up for lessons once a fortnight or once a week when i worked in a pro shop but they never got any better because they never practised in between the lessons. and practice chipping and putting more then anything else i remember a scratch golfer telling me that if you are confident of getting the ball up and down from within 20 yards of the green you dont have to hit the ball that well. i played with a guy off +2 once and he hit all over the place but my god could he ever putt.
so lessons yes but short game practice, short game practice ,short game practice more so imo. oh and dont buy cheap clubs from JJB they will be weighted horribly and have awful shafts in them get good clubs from a quality manufacturer taylor made cleveland mizuno titelist etc. good luck. THIS!! Practice chipping and the rest of your game will fall into place around it. If you dont need to hit the green to be comfortable scoring well then the approach shots become easier. I'd rather be just off the green with some space to work with than be on the green just and have a long putt. Had some Mizuno T-Zoid oversize for quite a few years now, absolutely brilliant love them to bits :D Title: Re: Golf Clubs Post by: david3103 on September 29, 2009, 09:39:51 AM I was told once that being a single-figure handicap golfer was easy... Miss every green and get up and down on half of them...
Played the guy in a matchplay, outdrove him on the first hole, at which point he asked if my 20 h'cap had been checked. Continued to be in better shape off the tee on pretty much every hole and lost 6&4 ( I have no shortgame skills) Title: Re: Golf Clubs Post by: moonandback on September 29, 2009, 09:49:33 PM I think 1 over off 4 greens is my best bad round
this was when i could actually play the game properly mind you. |
