Title: So I Won the Comp - or Did I? Post by: tikay on December 08, 2005, 02:13:57 AM Thank you for the very many kind texts & PM's about my "victory" at Luton on Monday. Today is the first chance I've had to set the record straight.
I won the comp. The Record books say as much, the official results say the same, the databases ditto. But I actually finished 3rd......... Here's what REALLY happened. Down to the last 3, Jeff Rogers had 250,000, Maurice Nicholson had 200,000, & I had 91,000. Maurice had begun the Final as Chip Leader, then I had taken the lead, then Jeff hit a purple patch, & wrested control. 1st prize, approx, £7,400, 2nd £3,400 & 3rd £2,200. The Chip Count was due in 5 minutes. I don't know what method they use for Chip Counts at Luton, & did not really care. I'd had a wonderful evening, & was not about to spoil it by getting into a barney about a few bob. Suddenly, Maurice asked if anyone fancied some "business". "I'm not fussed", but you'd better ask Jeff, he's the Chip Daddy" I replied Jeff, to my astonishment, said "I'll be happy with £5k, you two can have the rest". Maurice asked what that meant in money terms. I said it left £8k between 2nd & 3rd. He said "well I've got more chips than you, so I want more than half". I said "well I ain't arguing fella, I'm just telling you what's left. What do you suggest?" He said "I want £4,200, you can have £3,800". Fine I said. We all shook hands. So I got £3,800 for 3rd. Or so I thought. But......we were then reminded that we were obliged to "play it out" for the Trophy. It's now 05.35, past closing time. Management suggested we play a "one-hand, all-in blind" hand. Jeff, as Chip Daddy, said he was happy with that - he had the most money, that's all he wanted. OK, it's agreed. A one hand all-in blind jobbie, for the Tophy. I win the hand - I make a house with a card to spare, holding 6-7. I assume there will now be another hand, as they BOTH cover me in chips, but no, that was it. Handshakes all round, "well done tikay" da de da de da. And I'm given the Trophy, & Winners Jacket, & have my pic taken. So there you go. I really finished 3rd, yet I'm officially the winner. Bizarre, but true. Never believe what you read! My congrats to Jeff & Maurice, they played good & deserved to take the most money, & they were great table company. And, bearing in mind all things are relative, I was delighted to make my 6th Festival Cash at Luton in 2005, & 7th in less than 12 months at a Luton Fessie. (Excuse the Chirp). Title: Re: So I Won the Comp - or Did I? Post by: tikay on December 08, 2005, 02:41:10 AM Well, he was a coloured Gentleman - very nicely spoken, impeccably mannered at the table, & good fun. Wore a baseball cap, which I nicked off him whenever we got in a hand against each other. Top bloke.

I hope it was him, nice bloke Title: Re: So I Won the Comp - or Did I? Post by: RED-DOG on December 08, 2005, 02:45:13 AM Sorry was i politically incorrect? I hope it was him, nice bloke Yep the same bloke, King of the outdraw. On Monday at Luton he called all in against KK with A 4, the flop came 2 3 5..... Title: Re: So I Won the Comp - or Did I? Post by: tikay on December 08, 2005, 02:51:00 AM The oddity of my play on Monday was that I never sucked out on anyone, & every single one of my hands held up. Unless you count "speculative" or "value" calls pre-flop, I did "hit" a few nice flops when it mattered. But when all the chips went in, later in the comp, the best hand held up every time. Very unusual, I thought. Very lucky, too! But I did have a few misreads. Title: Re: So I Won the Comp - or Did I? Post by: ifm on December 08, 2005, 03:02:37 AM Sorry was i politically incorrect? On Monday at Luton he called all in against KK with A 4, the flop came 2 3 5..... some would call it fearless................................. Though he is known for 2 things in walsall, for sucking out on everyone and for thinking he's the new Phil Ivey (he said it, i kid you not) Title: Re: So I Won the Comp - or Did I? Post by: Trace on December 08, 2005, 09:32:42 AM Is Maurice the black fella from Walsall? IFM - you were in fact politically correct. Apparently the word coloured is not PC, and all non-whites are now referred to as black. This I was told by one of the Race and Ethnic Studies tutors at work. Perhaps its the 'small index' Copags at Luton that are providing all these misreads! Sheriff Title: Re: So I Won the Comp - or Did I?
