Title: A Birthday Party for a 4 Year Old
Post by: The Camel on October 02, 2009, 01:45:35 PM
Pass The Parcel, Musical Bumps, Pin the Tail on The Donkey (Got a picture of Tikay for this game) etc etc

All a bit standard, anyone had experience of a party which went with a bang and did they do anything unusual? Different games which were popular?

All this planning giving me a headache!

Help please!

boy or girl?

Boy, but there's 9 boys and 9 girls coming to the party.

God, I just thought, do I need home office clearance before having that many children round for the afternoon?

One kid to the other..

How old are you?

Well I don't know if I'm 4 or if I'm 5.

What do you know about sex?

Nuffink.

You're 4.

When I was 16-18 I used to be a kids party supervisor so I'm the king of these games.

Most popular ones were 'the whales and the fish' and 'traffic lights'.

Strangely the most popular was when we used to get 2 gym balls and just throw them at the kids. Last one not to get hit, wins.

There's a game called "pelt the rabbit in his big white face" which can be lots of fun.

Wales and the fish is essentially British bulldog but we weren't allowed to say that and this is a bit more friendly to young kids. Depending on the size of the party, pick 1/2/3 kids (whales) to stand in the middle. At one side all the other kids (fish) will be. Get the whales to shout 'We are the whales of the deep blue sea', then get the fish to shout 'we are the fish and you can't catch mee'. Blow a whistle and then the fish have to get to the other side without being touched by a whale. If they get touched on their way across they become a whale too. Last fish or two win and become the whales for the next game.

Traffic lights is where you put different coloured mats, we had special ones for the game but u can use hoops, bean bags, even bits of card of a certain colour. Make sure you begin with more than the number of kids. When you blow your whistle the kids have to run around. When you next blow the whistle, shout out the name of some different colours and kids have to stand (one on each) on the correct mats. Eliminate by removing some of the mats during the bit where they run around and shouting less and less colours etc...

I'll try and think of some more.

Got anywhere like Monkey Mates (http://www.monkeymates.co.uk/) near you?  Could work out pricey if there's a lot of children, but great fun.

I think they are just so commonplace now.

10 years ago they were a novelty, now a kid sees one and thinks "so what?"

Pinatas are great for that age!  Also, 'musical statues' goes down well.  Just get a wee spot prize for the girls and one for the guys to give out to the winners.  I've also done face painting for that age group, but you'll need someone willing to handle just that, as it takes time to get through 18 kids.

I am led to believe that private party entertainers are the way forward

There is a woman who does the Harrogate/Otley circuit up here know as "Suzie Sparkle" - pied piper for kids I am told - has them all captivated - P&Q for mum and dad!

The way forward so I'm told

Took my 5 year old nephew out to give my sister some peace, decided to splash out a bit. FML. Crazy golf: £12. Bowling: £14. That was just the first hour down.
Indoor DIY party games ftw, they enjoy it more, at a third of the price.

Generalising wildly:

The mothers don't approve and the fathers are jealous and always asking for tips.

Most people that don't play poker or gamble seriously don't realise how often you lose and assume if you are a professional you always win.

And trying to explain how gutted I am after last week doesn't cut much ice when they hear I won about twice the national average wage in one tournament!
