Cheers ironside. I mentioned this in another thread and am grateful that you've put this up as a poll.

Personally. I can't stand smoking in poker rooms. It makes my clothes stink, gives me a tickly cough for the rest of the week, and of course, assuming various experts are correct, could be killing me through passive smoking. - the latter may get a few hostile reactions, but that's my view anyhow.

I just think that every1 deserves the opportunity to play poker at their local casino without having to sit in a room full of smoke.

Perhaps as a middle ground, 1 or 2 short breaks could be implemented to offer smokers the opportunity to have a quick ciggy.

Walsall adopt the no-smoking rule and I think it works okay there. I get the feeling that it's just a matter of time before the gala cardroom follows suit.

I think I mentioned once before, when I started playing at Nottingham I was a smoker and even then I found it over the top. I've been given up over a year and, while I don't complain about smoking usually (pubs/clubs/partys/etc), in the card room it's really unpleasant. when you get sat between two smokers sharing an ashtray, perhaps leaving the fags resting in there while they play a hand, perhaps not putting them out properly. It can make me feel physically sick when it's at it's worst.

Well although I posed the question (or Ironside did, on my behalf - thanks mate!) specifically with regard to Gala Notts, why not treat the question as "should smoking be banned in ALL cardrooms"?

And if you want smoking to be allowed to continue, you'd better start voting sharpish - the "no smoking" lobby have a big advantage in the early voting!

Grosvenor already ban smoking in all their cardrooms (comps) so far as I know. In fact, the only places I can think of that DO allow smoking in comps are Gala & Napoleons.

The times they are a changing.......

Grosvenor Cardiff allow smoking during the competitions.
There is nothing worse than as a non-smoker, being stuck between two chainsmokers.

Should there not be a "not bothered" option in there?
I smoke but am happy with the no smoking rule, not too distant future will see smoking banned in all casino's/pubs/clubs etc. anyway. That annoys me, folks shouldn't tell me what to do and where, it ain't right.

but if one day you give up, you'll understand how unpleasant it is. I don't generally give smokers a hard time about it but 8 hours straight in a smokey card room is hard going.

It is my experience that some players blow smoke at you as a needling tactic.

Ash "the cockroach"  Abdullah for instance.

I am an occasional smoker myself, but I still find it very uncomfortable (not to mention unhealthy).

Especially in enclosed spaces like Nottm. and Sheffield.

I am surprised that dealers are prepared to work under those conditions.

After all bar/restaurant staff do not have to.

Oh dear, what have we started?

More & more folks are telling us they do not want smoking in cardrooms, & the voting so far says the same, by a huge majority.

So get your vote in NOW.

If the vote goes in favour of "No Smoking" we will let the Casinos know, & will suggest they hold a simple referendum amongst their players.

And as tikay is a smoker, looks like I had better enjoy it while I can!

I'm a non smoker and the smoke doesn't really bother me - maybe i've got used to it. I'm sure I would notice a difference if it was non smoking and would be in favour of such a move.

My only worry would be the disruption it could cause with people nipping out for a smoke - there would have to be tight rules about when a hand is considered dead if a player is not at the table.

atthe minute the smoke, at it's worst impacts on my concentration and decision making. I remember as a smoker what it feels like to really need a fag. I'm looking forward to playing against players dying for a smoke. boot on the other foot!

Tikay,

Of course you could use the impending bans as an excuse to give up.  Would fit in with your otherwise clean living, non-drinking image...  ;)

Give up? Clean living? You must be mixing me up with someone else......

But it DOES bother me that I infect others with my smoke, & having seen the huge majority (so far) in favour of banning smoking, I am bound to say that I'd welcome a smoking ban. But as someone else pointed out, the Casinos MUST impose the "not at your seat when the last card is dealt, your hand is dead" rule, to combat the "to & fro" smokers.

I think I know which way big Dave Smith's vote would go.  ;D

Hehe, I think we ALL do.......

Many people feel it equally strongly, but conduct themselves differently to Dave.

But this poll really has been an eye-opener, & if the current majority stands up, then the cardrooms really will HAVE to do something. Close friends of mine, such as Thewy, Dave Colclough & Junior, tell me how much it offends them, but being gents, they suffer in silence.

But as I said yesterday, the times they are a changing.....

I would quite like to hear a view from Gala & Napoleons on this subject. For sure, if the current majority holds up, this subject will NOT go away......

I agree that most people suffer in silence but would prefer to see it banned.  I would sincerely love to see it banned being a non smoker.

However, there is the whole image of the rich business man holding a big fat cigar and playing poker, which makes it looks glamorous to people playing poker.  At my university tournament there are definitely a few people who try to copy this image :)

there's a lot of 'images' about poker we are dispelling, why not make smokey rooms one of them?

As i did previously mention, when you do a poll such as this you should have a "not bothered" option.
You get a flawed result if you ask for yes or no as folks who ain't really interested are forced to vote one way or the other.
It's obvious the outcome anyway but it should be done right or not at all.
You should also run another poll "how many Blondites smoke", this will probably give more of an insight into the poll result.
Just playing devils advocate here as i really am not bothered, never been in a smoking cardroom but i do play cash games where smoking is allowed and well as i say it's no hardship.

not bothered = abstain
nobody is forced to vote.
I agree more options are a good idea though. how about...

Hi Ian,

Well I smoke, but it does concern me that I export my smoke to others. Niow I have seen the way the voting is going, it bothers me even more.
