Me and a friend r looking at goin to Melbourne for a few months, wanna just get an apartment near the centre of town and go out alot and basically chill out in the aussie summer ;)

Being a id1ot that i am, i no nothing about living in another country for a sustained period of time. So can u help me out plz.

Guessing were gunna need a visa?

With an apartment there is goin to b tax and bills to pay etc?

Not really sure about budgets etc either, my mate doesnt have the luxury of poker $ so he will need to find a job, bar work etc. How much is he gunna b able to earn out ther r the wages lower/higher than here?

If any1 has anythin that might help us not get there a get fucked on various things, comments r much appriciated.

Went to Oz last year mate but i was lucky as i had sumbody to stay with! I cant help with the accom side but i can give you a few pointers about working and visas etc...

You have to fill in an assesment for work so best not say you play poker for a living. Just make up that you work in a bar and you have warehouse experience etc...

The visa last 12 months from the day you enter and you can leave and go back to Aus as many times as you like in the 12 months!

To work in Aus you have to apply for a tax code once you get there, this is a bit like our national insurance number and you need one to work. Pretty simples. There is a list of job sites here... http://www.visabureau.com/australia/working-in-australia.aspx

To work in a bar you need to go on a couple of courses. RSA and RCG which is Responsibl service of alcohol and the other to do with gaming! All bar jobs need this and its a pretty simple 2 day open book course and common sense really.

I spent most of my time in NSW west of Sydney! Sydney is an awesome place. I only spen one long weekend in Melbourne but its home to the famous Crown casino where they hold the aussie millions in January and should be very easy for you to grind the cash tables there as its pretty fishy!! Only one casino per state in Aus but you cud easily make a living here!

Booze and Chicks are awesome too! Some of the best beers ive sampled out there!!

Glgl with this Toby, i'm thinking of doing something similar. I've been to Oz twice, in terms or poker, well live poker, Melbourne is far superior to anywhere else. Cost of living is afaik lower in terms of food etc.

Pay is higher and cost of living is a bit lower than here so you should be able to earn quite a bit of dosh while your there! I was earning $15-18 an hour in a bar which worked out about £7.50-£8 per hour!


For your Visa application you must show u have enough funds to support yourself OR a return ticket back home.

Will you be there for the Aussie Millions in Jan? You gonna have a shot if your there?

The Crown Casino is my favourite (non dusk till dawn) poker room in the world, really well organised, always plenty of games and the locals are really nice. You better like thai/chinese/cantonese/japanese food though if you are planning on staying in Melbourne for a long time, they love it.

Yh thats the plan, should play alot of those events and the Sydney APPT in Dec! should b gd and ty again for the info

cant help with the job thing but when i went backpacking round oz things i can reccomend

1) Uluru - you cant climb ayers rock now as its sectioned off for religious reasons but I went on a 3 day tour and did the whole bush living things ,sleeping under the stars etc

2) Place called Nimbin which is the hippie capitol of Australia Im not into drugs but its still a very cool place to kick back

3) Whitsundays - usually tours are out of Surfers Paradise (which i found extremely touristy) but once you get out there its awesome

4) Byron Bay was also cool place to hang out

5) Blue Mountains (nr sydney)

all those are awesome, should add frazer island in too thats diff class, rafting on tully river if you go that far north is a must aswell. airlie beech is exellent for drinking/going out thats where we hit whitsunday islands from
man so jelous wish i was back my mate is doing the east coast again at the moment . lucky you gonna be time of ur life!
