Title: Andy Gray
Post by: The Baron on October 17, 2009, 02:19:58 PM
I dont think I've ever disliked a commentator so much. He speaks the plainly obvious ("as a centre half he should be busting a gut to get back there" - no shit), he offers nothing tactically that wasn't offered back in the 1980's, he's biased and has more tired cliches than Ron Atkinson used to have, his opinion is rarely backed up by fact or even decent statistics and even worse they are usually based on "back in my day" or "when I was a player", two things which couldn't make his opinion more irrelevant in todays game of rotation, foreign managers and far superior tactics! Even worse, he's so OTT as a commentator he's actually off putting.

The funny thing is it's not just Liverpool fans who moan about him now, I've seen a growing trend of a mix of everyone bar Everton and Utd fans who just don't like him.

Does anyone rate him at all? I don't even know why he's on TV. He just seems to love the sound of his own voice.

I used to think he gave some decent insight into the game, but like a lot of people he disappeared up his own arse when people started telling how good he was. Same was true with Motty and Lynam when they started thinking they were some kind of A-list celeb.

Gray  is still better than fat Ron who just talked pure bs, whereas Gray manages only to talk 90% bs.

Of course he is a Dichead, he played for Rangers FFS!

Isn't that the problem? It's so one dimensional now. Kind like the thread about poker dross on TV and it not appealing to those who have half a poker brain - isn't that just Andy Gray in the football world?

I guess you are right though, and it's what the other thread pointed out so well - its probably what appeals to the masses.

Gray can be annoying but listening to the likes of Townsend, Birtles, Alan Smith make me thank god for Andy Gray.

Yea I'd agree with this, there dosent seem to be that many comms out there that aren't annonying, Houghton, Macari, Beglin off the top of my head tilt me. I saw a match recently where Chris Wadlle seemed  to be talking alot of sense though I'm not sure if that was a one off or whether he would be a good comm.
