Title: Liverpool v United
Post by: david3103 on October 22, 2009, 09:55:37 AM
15/8 for Liverpool at home?

Even given the recent run of and the possibility that the two totemic Liverpool players may be missing that still looks generous.

No Torresssss no chance.

The game at Anfield last season says different.

The problem is the entire team. No defence, no creativity, no confidence, no midfield. For the first time in years I fear for the the amount Utd may score on Sunday.

Aquilani played for the reserves for 15 minutes last night.  We need him in the side ASAP.  Sunday will be too early though, unfortunately.

Apparently the lack of funds at Liverpool have hit hard and Glenn Johnson is now doing two jobs - attacking full back winger with defensive duties, and Medical Officer

From the bbc
"Liverpool defender Glen Johnson insists he will be fit for Sunday's visit of Manchester United and believes Fernando Torres will be available for the game."
he went on to say "I think Fernando might be all right, but I'm not sure about Stevie,"

Well going by this season or last scoring goals isn't a problem with or without Torres - the problem this season is our defence.

You got to laugh - quoted from the BBC

Liverpool's official club merchandise Beach Set sold out in the wake of the giant red ball that deflated them at Sunderland last weekend.
Manchester United fans are suspected of being behind the sudden demand, but a vigorous search policy at the turnstiles is likely to deprive them of a tribute to Darren Bent's winning goal at the Stadium of Light.

I actually disagree with Trigg and think Liverpool are a decent price @ 3.1

You gotta think Torres, Gerrard and Johnson would be likely to play if they only had one working leg.

maybe i'm mental but i think if i was having a bet i would be on liverpool, the price is huge and we have seen it so many times that (trying to sound like a pundit) form goes out of the window.

I dont think man utd are half the team they were last year and although liverpool have been v.bad i just dont think the price reflects how close the game will be.

Pls feel free to quote this when manure smash in there 3rd goal.

Not expecting a win, hoping for a draw, but wouldn't be surprised to see United win. Not jumping on the Benitez out bandwagon though, as once Gerrard, Torres, Aquilani and Agger are fully fit then we'll come back.

I am not saying Liverpool are a bad bet, but if Gerrard is unfit and plays he will be a hinderence more than a help. He was a doubt for the opening game of the season against Spurs. Liverpool priced moved in a mile pre ko, when he was going to play. Gerrard played awful and Spurs deserved to win.

Starting to agree with this, I'm on the draw already, but it depends on our team. Aurelio needs to play to cope with Valencia's pace, Benayoun in the hole and Babel needs to turn up.

Benny Noon, Lucas and Kuyt were very important today.  It's amazing that virtually the same side that played so badly midweek managed to put on a performance today against a form side with quality throughout.  Obviously, Torres' was a difference between last week and today, but the rest of the team played well.

Thought the Carragher foul was actually a foul on him, but if the ref gives the foul against him and a card, then surely it had to be a red?  Bet it was evens for Vidic and/or Mascherano to be sent off!

Beach balls were funny and good to see the stewards and fans take it mostly in good humour.

In live play i genuinely felt that it was a yellow card,Owen was going away from the goal imo plus it was in the 87min so i dont think it would have actually made much difference. Also surely Vidic should have got a straight Red for taking out Kuyt? I didnt see any Utd defender near there so if he drags Kuyt down when clean through how is that not a straight red and 3 match ban?

Vidic must be delighted he dosent have to face Torres every week.

Ps Camel  dont be like that, just admit the fact you're jealous of how Torres looks , you would prob kill to have hair like that!  ;D

It really weird.

When I see Torres play he never strikes me as a world class player.

I watch Messi, Ronaldo, Henry, Robinho, Rooney etc etc etc I cannot be failed to be impressed and think "wow" virtually every time I see them play.

I never get that feeling with Torres, yet his goalscoring record is just amazing and cannot be argued with.

(I understand this post is probably crap, but it's really believe it to be true)

Title: Re: Liverpool v United

The others you mentioned do a lot more than just score goals.  Torres is an exceptional goal scorer, but doesn't contribute as much aside from this (which isn't a bad thing necessarily for a striker).  Maybe that's why it's less striking (pardon the pun)?

I don't want this to look like im disagreeing with Dave again for the sake of it, but Didier Drogba is absolutely brilliant.

IMO the 2nd best striker in the prem behind Torres and just ahead of Anelka and Abedayor.

Hes so strong and powerful and skillful aswell and not only is he 2nd top scorer in the premiership, hes also 2nd top in the assists league which is quite remarkable.

I dont agree with this (obv) but I think I actually get what you're saying here. The same could have been said about Ruud Van Nistlerooy a few years ago. Both are in the ilk of awesome "world class" striker but are not necessarily stepover/dribbling gods which is what people generally associate with being world class as an attacking player. Eto'o is another that comes to mind in this mould who for me is undoubtedly world class although rarely recognised as such.

The one I would disagree with from your list above is Rooney. He's improving massively this season though.

Agree - probably offers more as a striker, beyond just scoring goals, than any other premiership front man. An absolute nightmare to defend against. He didn't really come into his own until his late twenties and I think Adebayor will be better at the same age but to not rate Drogba is ridiculous.

Best big man up top since Shearer.

Baron i must say that it's a tiny bit of an insult to Torres to  put him in the same ilk as Van Nistelrooy, imo Van's link up play was poor , not much pace about him and barely ever scored a goal that wasnt a pen or a tap in and even made ManU play poorly because of his donking around. Obv he was lethal though and fair play to him for his amount of goals, i just think he has just got the one trick and dosent add much to a team apart from the goals. I'm sure you know Torres can score allsorts of goals and has pace to burn and he can dribble past players at ease. So i guess what I'm saying is Torres is far better than Van Nistelrooy and you did him a disservice by making that comparison.

Agree with most of that (altho RVN did score a few after running past players) but just saying both will be remembered first and foremost as finishers.

ha, redic.

This, Ive had lots of arguements with people that he is 1 of the top 3 strikers in the premiership.  Strength, pace, scores in the big games, can create, can play up front on his own or with a strike partner, gives defenders a nightmare when he plays.  Different class.
