Title: windows 7 Post by: Ironside on October 26, 2009, 01:02:57 PM the makers of my laptop have offered me an upgrade to windows 7 for £27.90 is it worth upgrading?
Title: Re: windows 7 Post by: gatso on October 26, 2009, 01:10:03 PM I've been using it for about an hour now and quite like it. I'll report back later when I've found out exactly what it does

Title: Re: windows 7 Post by: Bongo on October 26, 2009, 01:20:24 PM What OS have you got now and what version of 7 would they give you?

Title: Re: windows 7 Post by: Cf on October 26, 2009, 01:29:39 PM Yeah, upgrade.
Been using it on my laptop for months now. I quite like it and not had any problems. Title: Re: windows 7 Post by: DaveShoelace on October 26, 2009, 01:50:13 PM Can you upgrade it and keep your old stuff on? I heard you had to wipe/backup your hardrive first
Title: Re: windows 7 Post by: Ironside on October 26, 2009, 01:51:35 PM not sure if i take the upgrade they will send me a disk
Title: Re: windows 7 Post by: Cf on October 26, 2009, 01:53:02 PM Can you upgrade it and keep your old stuff on? I heard you had to wipe/backup your hardrive first Upgrading from Vista should be quick and painless. Upgrading from XP I think is more hard work and would probably benefit a reformatting of your hard disk. Title: Re: windows 7 Post by: kinboshi on October 26, 2009, 01:55:40 PM I'm not using it yet, but I've heard it's a lot faster and 'smoother' than Vista.
Will be moving to it on my next computer. Title: Re: windows 7 Post by: gatso on October 26, 2009, 01:57:34 PM early conclusion is I like it. it's very visual and feels smoother than vista or xp. for £30 I'd do it if you're not planning on getting a new comp soon

I used to have a disc with word/excel etc on it but i cant find it now and after re formatting my laptop (think thats what i did) it wiped all the programs! Is there a download anywhere on the net where i can get microsoft word on my laptop? or does anybody know where i can get it? pref for free Cheers Girgy Title: Re: windows 7 Post by: KarmaDope on October 27, 2009, 07:55:55 PM Not legally, no. You can probably torrent it but you run the risks of viruses etc etc.
Or you can get OpenOffice which is a free office program that is supposed to be a rival to Microsoft Office, I think Sun Microsystems developed it. It's a rival to Office in the same way Linux is to Windows. Title: Re: windows 7 Post by: CelticGeezeer on October 27, 2009, 10:29:37 PM Open office can read all the office files you currently have and is free, you can also save files in office format http://why.openoffice.org/

That was mainly with spreadsheets but I don't think there's much difference with the documents either. @ Ironside, its a standard offer, applies to everyone who bought a Vista Premium laptop after 26/06. With it being £27.90, I'm guessing you have a Toshiba laptop... I sure have ever needed their support. Ill have a look tomorrow if I remember as Im not 100% up on the Windows 7 stuff. Surely they wouldnt stop the XP support next year seeing as most businesses insisted it was still available pre loaded on computers as Vista was so poor. I finally installed W7 today (academy (free) licence FTW :D ) and so far I'm loving it, very slick, very easy to use and just all round lovelyness. As for XP support - yes that will stop next year, and yes you should think about upgrading soon after that support ends. Cheers Title: Re: windows 7 Post by: Ginger on October 29, 2009, 09:55:33 AM I'm no expert on W7 yet, but from what I understand the easiest way to do it is to upgrade to the same edition.
So for you it should be Vista ultimate = W7 ultimate. Of course that doesn't mean you can't use the professional edition for instance, but from what I gather you will have to the do a clean install (which is what I had to do). As for where to get the upgrade, I'll let someone else answer the best place to obtain it, as I was lucky to get my copy via MSDN. I downloaded it from MSDN a few weeks ago, and I have to say I think it's a triumph of marketing. There really isn't that much improvement over Vista (which I think is fine, generally, apart from the UAC crapness). The way W7 is now the best thing since sliced bread is impressive marketing, to say the least. Title: Re: windows 7 Post by: gatso on October 29, 2009, 11:59:55 AM Developers Network. But close :). Don't want a blowup about it, just curious as to what you think is so much better? Maybe I've missed something... And I don't necessarily mean marketing in terms of big adverts. They seem to have managed to get it into people's heads that it's solved all the problems of Vista. I'm not sure how they've done it, or whether it really is light years ahead (IMHO not, obv), but I think the way they've built up to it has been very clever somehow. I just don't know how :). Title: Re: windows 7 Post by: gatso on October 29, 2009, 05:07:25 PM I'm not aware of any marketting of any type. all I knew about w7 prior to this week was it was a new version of windows. I had no idea when it was out, what was new, whether it was supposed to be any good. in fact I'm pretty sure the only time I'd even heard mention of it was in a couple of threads on blonde and it's unlikely they were part of microsoft's marketing campaign
even if they had got me with their marketing telling me it solved all the problems of vista I would've wondered what the hell they were talking about as I was more than happy with vista everything about 7 feels right. it's smooth, things are where you think they should be, the new taskbar stuff is great and you wonder why they didn't do it before. much more intuitive, visually it's better and it also seems to run everything faster Title: Re: windows 7 Post by: Shogun112 on October 29, 2009, 06:17:28 PM super cheap for the Ultimate package... http://www.software4students.co.uk/Microsoft_Windows_7_Ultimate_32_bit_Edition_Upgrade-details.aspx
